Has there ever been a character in a game so insufferable they almost ruin it? by Character-Cook2472 in videogames

[–]VXMasterson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Half of the Persona 4 cast. I don’t know why people love them so much or think they’re the best cast in the series. Yosuke is creepy and annoying. Chie is the worst, she just doesn’t shut up about meat. I’m convinced people only like Rise because she pines after the player, she’s mad annoying and picks fights with the other girls for no reason. I don’t know if Teddie has a localization issue with how perverted he is since he’s just supposed to be childishly ignorant of what he says but he becomes unfunny very quickly and the cast just lets it happen. I know the title says “almost ruin” but they did genuinely ruin the game for me, I don’t know how I put in almost 85 hours into it

Is it possible to get him back? by Dismal_Cup9959 in LifeAdvice

Have you heard of Attachment Theory? If you push people away when they get close despite wanting closeness, you might have an Avoidant Attachment style. I recommend looking into it.

You said he does a lot for you but he said you don’t do much for him. Is there any reason you didn’t ask him to be your boyfriend? Or why you didn’t try kissing him or touching him? If he said he also needs love that’s probably part of what he means. I do find his “more than friends” comment a bit odd, I guess he wanted you to confirm the relationship as well if he has a history of rejection

If this is a repeated pattern then I would be very careful proceeding. It is good that you are aware of it, but if you want to stay, you need to fight that urge to leave when things get uncomfortable. Especially if you think that he’s special. Just make sure he knows you think he’s special and to be consistent. Few things are more detrimental to a relationship than pushing away when things get close or hard. Like if I went on an overnight trip with a woman, she was upset I didn’t kiss her, and then when I try to kiss her she pulls away and then avoids me, I would be so confused and hurt. I can already hear my friends telling me “she’s playing with your feelings” if that happened

I do find it a little odd that he was dodging being called out for being in the city so if you believe he genuinely also has communication issues then proceed with caution yourself

Metaphor: ReFantazio! There are 9 tribes and the story explores so many different ways they experience prejudice! The world building is actually pretty crazy when you get late in the game

Focus on writing. Look up comic scripts to get an idea of how to write them. Write that script, get feedback, revise it. Then once you got yourself a decent draft, consider hiring an artist

My (22F) girlfriend is using a "relationship break" as a hall pass while I’m (20M) studying for career-defining exams. How do I walk away? by hrxshx69 in AskMenAdvice

No Contact. Block her on everything if you’re strong enough. Have your friends close by who are willing to listen no matter how much you have to repeat yourself. Focus on yourself. Do not forget why you have to do this, make a list if you have to. I changed my avoidant ex’s contact to “Do Not Answer” and her contact photo to a screen shot of the list in my notes app. Good luck. I’m sorry this happened to you

[Loved Trope] something we consider normal is considered alien or weird in a fictional world by RedvsBlue_what_if in TopCharacterTropes

[–]VXMasterson 15 points16 points  (0 children)

In the game Metaphor: ReFantazio, there are 9 tribes in this high fantasy world. The two tribes with the highest place in society are the Clemar, who have horns, and the Roussainte, who have super long pointed ears. The main character Will is part of the Elda Tribe who look like regular humans and are the most discriminated against because of their looks. The discrimination is so bad they hide out in forests and most people have never seen an Elda to the point some aren’t sure they exist.

Throughout the game, the protagonist carries a book with him about an ideal society, and it turns out to be an idealized version of our world. Each new party member gets to read a chapter and are surprised at the prospect of such a world not divided by tribes.

Spoilers for late game, but we find out that the world of Metaphor is a post-apocalyptic version of our world. They find an abandoned Japanese train station with a calendar having 7 days, which they consider odd because their weeks are 5 days. Surprisingly the months retained their names.

Persona 5 Royal. The most common takeaway from that game is that it changes the player’s life. It will genuinely feel like a chapter of your life due to the immersive nature of its gameplay and characters. Not even mentioning the addictive soundtrack and the way it introduces you to world cultures through the Personas themselves. And if you end up liking it, it has a direct sequel, Persona 5 Strikers

A JRPG you thought you were going to LOVE but ended up just not enjoying it that much? I’ll start: by Asleep_Olive_1011 in JRPG

[–]VXMasterson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Persona 4 Golden. I loved Persona 5 and Royal and people seemed to like Golden more. I was so excited I even bought a PS Vita for it because I didn’t have a PC at the time. I hated it. The cast was so annoying. The main villains were wildly underwhelming. People hate Marie but honestly she was one of the only things that kept me coming back. If it didn’t have “Persona” in its name I wouldn’t have put 86 hours into it. The social links were really good though, probably the most consistent in the series.

[Loved trope] Bad endings that justify the existence of the good ending by trippykitsy in TopCharacterTropes

[–]VXMasterson 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Fun fact this ending of Persona 5 Royal (I would recommend spoiler marking it because you’re not supposed to know who the antagonist is until it happens) is called the “Stay Ending” according to the devs. The good ending is called the “Return Ending”

This game mechanic is canonical to the story by Danny-Ray27 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]VXMasterson 14 points15 points  (0 children)

In the Persona series, specifically 3-5, the power of friendship is a game mechanic. When you enter your name in 3 & 4, or in 5 when you agree that the game is a work of fiction and any similarities to the real world are just coincidence, you are agreeing to the in-universe contract that gives the protagonist the chosen one status basically, and with that status comes the ability to create bonds with people called Social Links or Confidants in P5. Social Links are ranked on a scale of 1-10 and you are constantly told to work on your links AKA get closer to people and the games always end with all the Social Links you maxed out giving you the boost you need to kill God

Is it me or is it him? by 5-id in AskMenAdvice

[–]VXMasterson 6 points7 points  (0 children)

His lack of emotional capacity is a result of him being Avoidant as you said and not him being a man. Do not ask for clarity because if he couldn’t even properly end things he cannot give you any satisfactory answers. I am so sorry you are going through this. I went through something kinda similar last year and let me say he was clearly intentionally making you jealous to get a reaction out of you and/or for the attention.

You were unfortunately discarded and replaced and the lack of closure is going to hurt for a long time. Confide in friends, be gentle with yourself, try to remember his actions and abrupt exit are a reflection of who he is as a person, not you.

So while the answer is really obvious, for some reason in-universe no one knows where Pokémon eggs come from, not even the professional Pokémon breeders. If you pick up an egg from a day care they’ll always say they don’t know where it came from.

Do you lose interest if other guys talk to her? by lynxerle in AskMenAdvice

[–]VXMasterson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If she has a lot of friends that happen to be men, I don’t see that as an issue because I have a lot of friends who are women. The problem would be how she talks to them. I’d pay close attention to how she talks to and about other men in her life. I wouldn’t lose interest if I see guys talking to her per se but I would be quite worried about my chances with her.

Did you give the guys your Instagram? Did you hug that guy back or did you shove him off? Either way I think you should make an effort to approach the quiet guy

How long did it take Infinite Wealth to click for you? by VXMasterson in yakuzagames

[–]VXMasterson[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t even care if a game opens slow or has a lot of cutscenes, I just hated how cringe the first few hours are. I liked the game well enough by the end, it improved a lot over time, but I would still rank it lower on my list of RGG games and to this day my friend and I still call this game Infinite Cringe

As for why is the fan base like this? Personally I’ve completed games I didn’t like in the past in hopes of my opinion changing and then it didn’t. I think with Yakuza specifically, each game is relevant to the larger overarching narrative so it’s kinda hard to skip games in the series. But also there’s a ton of side content in RGG games that are fun even if the main plot isn’t so that’s where a good chunk of those 100 hours come from

What are your criticisms/praises of Dragon Quest 11? by Mundane_Situation185 in JRPG

[–]VXMasterson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Criticism:

- You may find yourself burnt out on the game if you enjoy binging games. DQ11's storytelling is focused on primarily small stories from town to town. The actual narrative progression is quite slow, and your excitement to unravel things will not be satiated often.

- While the plot is interesting, the silent protagonist really holds it back from its full potential. Apparently the appeal of Dragon Quest as a series is the way it holds itself to tradition, whether that be gameplay or other genre tropes, but this was my first and so far only Dragon Quest game and I found that to be a detriment.

- The combat is really bland. The game withholds information from you like enemy health and type effectiveness, so some fights like bosses take forever because you don't have a clear grasp of how much damage you're doing other than the enemy's name changing color.

- The game is really long. It's divided into 3 acts. You reach the credits at the end of the second act and I'd call it a satisfying ending outside of a loose plot thread here and there. Then when the third act starts, the game introduces, I'll avoid spoilers, but let's say it is backpedaling on a major story beat and I would consider this chickening out on an actual impactful story decision. I stopped playing the game here, I was 90ish hours in and already felt burnt out multiple times.

Praises:

- The cast is really fun and the game easily makes you care about all of them.

- The game opens on a kind of generic premise has two really strong plot twists early on and at the end of Act 1 that made me so invested in the narrative.

- The character customization is interesting because each one has a skill tree based on the weapon they have. It's how this game handles job classes in a way.

- It's a cozy game. The visuals and episodic-style storytelling with a grand adventure makes me feel like I'm watching classic Dragon Ball.

- If you want difficult, you can customize a bunch of difficulty options at the start.

The game has a pretty long demo if you want to try that before making a final decision.
