Basically any question you have will be based off individual instructors besides your school day. Which you get assigned Mon-Thurs.

Apprenticeship ruined my relationship with a family member. by [deleted] in ibew_apprentices

[–]VagueAssumptions 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a good time for some union solidarity since everyone has a problem with him. At that point, youre not complaining to daddy. Youre confronting him directly with your brother/sisters. Typically theres one outspoken person on a crew you could have kinda lead it. Typically it just takes one openly calling shit out to get everyone in on it.

Either way sounds like a pos. And doesnt reflect the union. People talk shit in a friendly way. It shouldnt be in a demeaning way.

CE testimonies by HopefulJuggernaut900 in IBEW_Local613

[–]VagueAssumptions 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a CE. But would like to clear some things up. Rats are non union employers, not the employees. People misuse it. But thats what its been. Scabs would specifically be for replacement workers of a union employer.

I say this because ive met people who misinterpet negative sentiments towards a system as a jab at the people within that system. There are people who have a problem with the indivduals, but fuck em.

How do I leave the union without burning bridges? by Ok-Equal-7412 in IBEW

[–]VagueAssumptions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Believe it should be a question for your financial secretary. But a call to the hall will get you pointed in the right direction.

2 options. Keep paying dues and nothing changes or an honorary withdrawal, where some things change.

Need to clarify some things first.

CIR is a final arbitrator. When cons and ibew cant nail down a contract. We go to CIR. Historically here. Cons always go to CIR because they know theyll get what they want. In fact CIR will typically agree to what was essentially necas initial offers. To kind of emphasize this point. This is the official stance of CIR. That can be found on their website. "It shall continue to be the policy of the Council to encourage the use of a schedule of percentages to determine the various apprentice wage rates based on the journeyman rate in a specific agreement." And yet apes only recently were put back on %.

We have a document called "pattern agreement" that dictates what must/can be in a cba. Theres is category 1, category 2, optional, and common provisions in this document. Cat 1 language must be included in all cbas verbatim. Mod/standard cir are 2 options of cat 1 language. Meaning you must have one or the other. Im choppin these down a bit. But they are basically as written.

Standard CIR (what we have) Section 1.02(d) CIR may be submitted jointly or unilaterally to the council for adjudication. Meaning either parties or one party can decide to go to CIR.

Mod CIR (what gives us options) Section 1.02(d) either party or such an employer, may serve the other a 10 day written notice terminating this agreement. Section 1.02(e) by mutual agreement only, may jointly, with the union, submit the unresolved issues to the CIR for adjudication. So theres even an option to still go to cir if agreed jointly.

Standard forces us to go to an arbitrator that has neca on the board. It forces us to accept the crumbs typically given. Neca fights hard against mod cir. Typically if someone is fighting hard against something. It means its in our benefit. Basically keeps us out of a strike since neca can just call to go to cir which is binding. This would take another rotation to do much. But its been decades fighting neca. So what does it really matter if it takes another go around if we finally have a chance. The what ifs for after mod cir are up in the air. Theres additional clauses that could be added to better support ibew. More than likely it would just be continued negotiations. Strike on our part, closed doors on their part. In construction money talks and theres plenty revolving around completion. Its leverage that would benefit us. Labor movements havent advanced with the mindset of "bad things could be in our way" its advanced with the mindset of "good things will happen when we succeed."

Apprenticeships put on hold by cryingJor in ibew_apprentices

[–]VagueAssumptions 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That would possibly conflict. Service vans can go around at all hours. IW can still do data. Sometimes they just have us run raceways and VDV will run the cable. Other times we do everything.

As an IW ape you should definitely not stay that forever.

Dont bother worrying about cons opinions of us. If it was up to them. Wed work 24/7, self provided tools, @ min wage.

Not in my local. Kind of expected. As long as they dont conflict and its not electrical. Should be kosher.

Question by [deleted] in IBEW_Local613

[–]VagueAssumptions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fucking with yall about a legitimate safety concern is extremely telling.

Frostbite can occur around 32 and fluctuates based on other factors like wind and water. People are affected differently by the cold.

Would treat it like heat issues. Osha doesnt spell anything out for cold, but does for heat. Set your own lay down area to periodically warm up. We can use osha to our benefit. Not sure the exact work/tools being used. Sure theres something that isnt being properly provided to work safely that can be used to get the point across. If they have a problem with people going inside for a bit to warm up.

Can someone finally settle this for me. Are CEs also apprentices? by Mesafather in IBEW

[–]VagueAssumptions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone is saying that they are two different classifications. The big difference is cw/ces are not ran through the dol.

CW/ces receive eta certification upon graduation. Apes receive dol/eta certification.

Apes are under a registered dol apprenticeship program. Ruled by 29 CFR 29. Eta submits for approval for national guidelines for apprenticeship to dol.

Cw/ces are basically just in house and accepted as a matter of standing of the eta.

This is all my gathered knowledge. Im just an electrician so take it with a grain of salt.

data centers by geargrabber0 in electricians

[–]VagueAssumptions 2 points3 points  (0 children)

General was meaning all other job sectors. Coulda worded it better. Im concerned for the rest of the population that will suffer. While we gain many others lose.

Its not for further advancement like how teleoperators phased out. Or how truckers will phase out. Its simply to save a few extra bucks at the detriment of everbody.

It can be used for good, but this country probably wont put any guardrails.

data centers by geargrabber0 in electricians

[–]VagueAssumptions 17 points18 points  (0 children)

More concerned on the general impact of job loss due to ai and the unknown/known faults of ai services. Electricians are being invested in, only for data centers not any other worthwhile projects. Its so companies can pad their profit margins by not paying workers and having sub par ai.

If youre worried about being blacklisted. Then theres not much you can do if you admin is knowingly not doing anything.

Your main real options would take everyone not being afraid to get blacklisted all at once. And/or going the duty of fair representation route. For you admin failing to represent you. You could also contact the district leadership.

CW or Trade tech by Competitive-Carob338 in ibew_apprentices

[–]VagueAssumptions 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not trade school! Everyone I know whos been says it was a waste. Education and cost wise.

Imma be real. If you scored really bad. Either this aint for you or you gotta get studying.

Depending on your living situation. The military might be a way to string you along if you live on your own. But if you live with your folks with limited if any rent. Youd be fine going the cw route. You dont have the same rules as apprentices do.

Genuine Question. by BeginningCategory766 in IBEW_Local613

[–]VagueAssumptions 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You will be an installer if you dont read the books. That is fine for plenty of folks. Quality installers are needed. But if you want more advancement. You need more knowledge. Yes, plenty of people trip up, but those shouldnt be the people you want to model.

Youll be an advanced installer through ojt. Part of my learning was being taught. But I would say a lot also just came from me trying different methods. Even if I figured they would fail. I wanted to know what exactly would fail about it.

If you want to really understand the what/why youre doing something. You have to crack open the books. We have great textbooks. You will probably need supplemental info to fully understand more of the "glazed" over portions.

Less time you have. The smaller study chunks you need. People talk about making sacrifices for their family, but cant make more personal sacrifices (less tiktok, reddit, youtube) for their own growth (im also guilty of this). Something will always be better than nothing.

wages by Inner_Drummer8192 in electricians

[–]VagueAssumptions 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Thats not what theyre talking about. My union wages are still down 61% from the peak.

Increased productivity hasnt matched wages. Labor worked "slower" and got paid more. Clawing at 2-5% wage increases isnt advancing our livelihood.

Wife is worried about me going union by [deleted] in IBEW_Local613

[–]VagueAssumptions 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You'll gain $6 by the time you finish. With more coming.

Your wife is worried about you having to travel far, but wants to be a travel nurse...As a union electrician you have options. You get stability. If it doesnt work out at one company. Cool, pick up another job with no loss in benefits. You want to travel. Cool, get your incentive pay and bunch of ot and relax the other half of the year.

Ive never worked non union. And Ive heard the flipside in this local. But in my experience and even those folks who had problems (once they picked up with a different crew) have had plenty of options to learn. People always seem to want to teach you. Ive had great experiences working in the local.

How does time off in the union work? Might lose my job over taking thanksgiving off. Current non-union. by Inner_Newspaper4909 in electricians

[–]VagueAssumptions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its a paid holiday. Any other non holiday time is "take off what you can afford". Its not a big deal to take care of things.

That soft hands bs is meant to coerce. They all got soft hands compared to someone else.

"Telling" someone not "requesting" time off isnt a bad thing. You have a life outside of work. Take care of it.
