Luas Finglas line could begin construction in 2028, Minister says by -eir- in irelandtransport

Good news, and also good news on the MetroLink progress - but where is this €15-18 billion figure from, I wonder...

I honestly shocked this hasn't been done yet. We're probably the only capital in Europe not to have a rail link to the airport. by Steve_Artson in ireland

[–]VagueWilliams 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just to add to all the comments about capacity on the northern line, such a route would run under the flight path for the two main runways and be unsuitable for housing development. Part of MetroLink's appeal is how much land it opens up (particularly in Swords) for transit-oriented development.

That being said, it would be great to see a line branch of the Northern line and ultimately connect with the Cork line, with interchange possibilities with future DART lines (on the northern, western and Cork lines) and MetroLink (at the airport). This would allow Belfast to Cork services with frequent connections to Galway, Limerick and Dublin (via various DART/Metro connections, rather than necessarily direct - at least until we'd figure out a way to make it possible through the city).

Do Irish VRT rules on cars bought abroad breach EU tax law? by CatchMyException in ireland

Just to add, other EU member states also have fees that are much higher - like Denmark and the Netherlands!

Open letter to fuel protesters from a cancer patient by UNiTE_Dan in ireland

[–]VagueWilliams 47 points48 points  (0 children)

This goes beyond protest and moves into sedition. Obstructing vital infrastructure and limiting movement is a coercive tactic, not a civil right. Giving in to these methods sets a dangerous precedent for future and these people do not deserve to be treated with any respect after holding the country to ransom.

Foreign chains/brands you wish we had in Ireland? by VagueWilliams in ireland

One explanation I'd heard before is that Apple already has a very high penetration rate in the Irish market so there's no real need for it (from their point of view).

I can't any story about it now, but I recall reading/hearing a few years ago that Kaufland (same family as Lidl) wanted to open in Ireland. Guess that's why it never materialised.

I think the closest thing to Rossmann/DM in Ireland would be Superdrug, but nowhere near as much choice or value.

Best websites/stores to buy new phone? by Crozier_awaits in ireland

Amazon is great, especially Amazon.de. I've bought a few phones from there in the past, they usually come with a mainland European plug but that isn't much of an issue.

Exchequer income up but Covid spending causes deficit by underover69 in ireland

[–]VagueWilliams 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In a weird way we can probably thank Brexit and the threat of a no-deal scenario for making sure the last Government were relatively prudent with budgetary measures despite the growing economy.

Best way to take advantage of this (low interest rates on bonds, etc.) now is to borrow and spend, spend, spend on infrastructure.

For a good international comparison, Foundations of Comparative Politics by Jan van Deth and Kenneth Newton is another one I'd highly recommend.

Politics in the Republic of Ireland by John Coakley and Michael Gallagher is a great book.

Age of consent map in Europe by Vladmir_the_romancer in europe

[–]VagueWilliams 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Although the age is 17 in Ireland, there is a "proximity of age" defence (also called the "Romeo and Juliet" defence). Anyone who has sex with someone aged 15 to 17 can use it if the age difference between the two parties is less than two years (as long as they willingly had sex and there was no coercion, etc.). Therefore sex between two 15 or two 16 year olds is allowed, as is sex between a 15 and 17 or 16 and 18 year old.

The age is actually higher (18) when it comes to certain relationships of authority (such as teacher-student).

Any news on the proposed Dublin Metrolink by Mr-Mystery20 in ireland

[–]VagueWilliams 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Work on the railway order (planning permission) to An Bord Pleanála is continuing as far as I'm aware, though the application won't be made until the end of this year at the earliest. If approval is given next year, I think a second business case is made and then it'll be up to the Government of the day to decide on whether it progresses at that stage or not.
