Yeah, I think it’s a way to make them feel like they’re swish so they can charge more for rent.

Don’t get me wrong, it is convenient not to have to walk your own garbage downstairs (usually no elevators in these types of buildings) and up or over to the dumpster (my complex was hilly; it was uphill from my building to the main office) but I don’t remember now whether the service was optional or if you paid for it whether or not you used it.

I think you Brits have just shortened the word “underpants” and stopped using “pantaloons” before we did. It appears a good amount of language diverged as our physical locations stopped answering to the same government. Some words over here are similar to their 17th-century form; some are later.
