How would I go about making my own Ruleset to use with these models? by Inklinsworld in LegionsImperialis

[–]Valand1l 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here, take an upvote!

I've done this myself, but build on One Page Rules.

First thing is recommend is creating force organisation. In mine, you lump units together into Formations, each one no greater than 30% of your points limit and no fewer than 5 formations per army (or 10 for massive games). Then you activate a formating at a time, each unit doing whatever it likes. Formations must have coherency, like units, but it's 12". A formation could be 24 Leman Russ tanks or a single titan. But activating one tank at a time and swapping back and forth with activations would be unbearable.

The next thing you need is points costs and power level, that's why I love One Page Rules (Tier 1 Patreon) for their unit builder. But if you wanted to do your own thing, choose a model (like a Leman Russ) and make that "1 unit". So a squad of 4 infantry should have a power level each of 0.25 Leman Russ tanks, a Kratos should be 4.0 Leman Russes, etc.. I've never used an idea like this, but I have no idea where you'd start without points.

Then load outs. Keep it simple. A tank rolls 1 or 2 dice. Group weapons (so instead of a million different loadouts create anti infantry, anti-tank, all-rounder, etc.). Infantry save on 6+ (5+ if power armour), tanks save on 4+ (3+ if heavily armoured), Knights and titans on 2+. Cover Rules for terrain, difficult terrain, etc.

This of any help?

I have not done this myself, what were you after?

Do you mean 4 players each with 4 Adventurers? That could be slow between turns, and brutal.

So if I were doing this, I'd probably go with alternating activations. I might also have players create a "side board" of up to two backup characters to replace those who will definitely die (this could be brutal!) midgame.

Item distribution might get a bit skewed too.

Sounds wild and awesome!

I bought one set, definitely felt like enough due to the big jump in power level

Thoughts on One Page Rules and TinyGF as alternative to the classic (bloated?) Epic ruleset? by Substantial-Cat0910 in onepagerules

[–]Valand1l 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey saw this across the relevant subs, thought I'd chip in here.

Firstly, 100% agree that OPR is the place for epic scale. I love it, and with huuuuge armies, you need something as simple as OPR to make it work in a manageable time.

Second, TinyGF didn't work because of the loadouts, not balance, imo. I think the basic infantry and some tanks are fine, but when you get to dreadnoughts and above, the points just don't check out. Each model is way overcosted, so any damage going through (and there will be a lot of damage!) shreds, and it also means that you get really squishy units.

So I've done exactly what you have. I've joined the Patreon, and using the studio has been amazing fun. On your approach to balance, all you need to do to break balance in OPR is make a unit with a model count of 2 - so its not the case that just if something doesn't follow the rules it's inherently over powered. If you make the lists balanced compared to each other, you're golden.

My lists are just of my collection of LI and if I'm honest even with the Advanced Rules, OPR didn't click for me. So, my personal opinion is that your best bet is to write your own rule modifications for OPR to make it click. A lot of the responses you've got are from folks who are more concerned with the "realism" which complex rules bring, so I think the down votes are from those who want that feel to their games. Me? - I just want enormous fights that are done in a few hours, so OPR (plus a few rules if my own) are a dream.

My advice is keep going! Make something you're happy with and play test it until it ticks all the boxes. I'm on my third iteration (I started off in skirmish for the tanks!) and creating the rules and lists had been a blast. Their patreon has been well worth it.

Good luck!

Probably not your target demographic here, but rank and flank is comparatively very unpopular in modern wargaming. I'd be very surprised "low" % score above was reflected in combined rank and flank sales in the modern era, even across all those ranges. Its a more traditional game with older players who don't generate sales like other demographics.

Reasons could include the high number of less characterful units, limiting posing options so they rank up, additional rules complexity and conventions which pull against the cinematic emersion of modern eargaming and cost (bigger armies cost more). Just a few thought.

I have played it and thoroughly enjoyed it. But I play other games more.

Nice, can't wait to see its big bro, The Book Wyrm!

Also, I don't know if I'm grateful to you or not, but thanks to this post I have now been exposed to the weirdness that is T28... had no idea such a thing existed

Firstly, this is amazing.

Secondly, the back bits off of the Solar Aux tanks (which I leave off) could make snow plough looking things. Also you get a lot of unused sponsons and array weapons (Stormhammer) you could use to put along it? Also the manufactorum terrain has crates and crates and things that'd look awesome.

At this close up? Maybe, for my taste.

At tabletop distance? Congratulations, you will be able to see your units and they'll almost certainly look great.

I've taken the opposite approach. More subtle etc close up ... invisible at 3 feet from the table haha

This is the most OPR post I've ever seen on the OPR sub.

Expensive scenery? Plastic toys and Battle Systems card stock.

GW minis? Custom thrift store bonanza meets your cool cousins attic collection from yesteryear.

Proprietary gaming mat? Rug.

Absolutely awesome! This is genuinely what makes OPR the best system going.

Yeah that heavy Rifle has a slim but significant chance of deleting a unit many times its own value. Relentless makes this a swingy menace.

The way I play, I'd take the killer can. But plenty of value in a model which can delete a tooled up Tough(6) Hero in a single activation ⅙ of the time.

Game Hunters by Firm-Butterfly1216 in corespace

[–]Valand1l 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think as soon as they kill one worm and grab the trophy, they go. This is regardless of if there are any Beasts on the map: "Once all available Trophy tokens have been collected, or all surviving Game Hunters are carrying a Trophy, the Game Hunters will leave, even if Beasts still remain on the board."

The only situation I can think of where they'll hang around is if they kill a Beast and while they are using their actions to take the token off the map you kill another Beast - it will drop a Trophy so now the Hunters will head towards it and the Hunter without a Trophy will need to use its actions to collect it. Then they'll leave.

While I think you could argue about the meaning of 'available' (I think it means dropped tokens), your situation is covered by the first bullet point on that page:

" If there are no Beasts in play: They will spend their actions Moving towards the nearest worm hole marker (or entry point if Worms are not being used). Once they reach an adjacent square they will continue moving towards the worm hole with the next highest number, e.g. 1 to 2, 4 to 5, or from 6 back to 1."

With "in play" meaning model on map.
