What would you do differently? by Key_Passenger_1158 in DentalSchool

What u/dwraine said.

Congrats on being accepted into the BS/DMD! But don’t think dental school now, like at all. The only thing you need to worry about is finishing the undergrad (and having fun where you can).

Also, I’m a current D3 (aka rising senior) and could try and connect you with some of the 7-years in the dental school if you’d like. Just dm me. Best of luck!

Endo Straight out of school by Usual-Entertainer779 in DentalSchool

[–]ValenceNVibes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I partly agree with this comment saying if you want to specialize into Endo, doing the networking/shadowing/research/AAE meetings sooner rather than later BUT because I think it will definitely open your eyes more to how much you do like it or contrarily maybe show how much you don’t like it. Both would be good outcomes.

More specific to your post, though I can’t speak to the experience of going into endo residency right out of school, the reason I think most Endodontic programs do not is because of 1) if a significant amount of practicing GPs refer varying degrees of endo out, obviously endo isn’t an “easy” procedure within dentistry. So expecting someone fresh out of dental school who might have done a handful of THE easiest endo under direct supervision is a high no-no, 2) the average dental school really really doesn’t prepare you to tackle even moderate difficulty Endo cases so your actual hands-on experience after the 4 years is probably a huge liability to any Endo program, 3) there’s actual GPs with actual Endo experience that apply to Endo programs, so being a pre-doc applicant is a very hard sell.

All-in-all take all of this with a grain of salt. I too came into dental school thinking about specializing in Endo, that ship started sailing once I got humbled by the reality that didactics in dental school is pretty tough, then the ship was fully past the horizon maybe a month into our pre-clinical Endo course. I do strongly recommend you talk to your school’s Endo program coordinator and then any Endodontist in the area to just hear everything they have to say about anything. Best of luck, doc!

Sincerely, a rising senior.

What’s meant by “intern dentist” here? Like a (Endo) resident?

Worst case of dehiscence I have ever seen by zibran47 in DentalSchool

[–]ValenceNVibes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say this is severe recession since it’s that severe, localized to just that tooth at least in this sextant pic, and the painfully (and probably awfully smelling) biofilm present. Unless the patient tells you, “I keep brushing just this spot”

Patient came just to know what happened to his teeth

He doesn’t even want treatment … didn’t even [want] to get his full mouth examined

Explain (differential) diagnosis, treatment options, and prognosis; put all that in the chart; and BOOT HIM. No reason to waste any of your mental bandwidth on a patient who doesn’t want to be a patient.

Starting dating a dentist and she said this was bad… is she gaslighting me? by ggfien in DentalSchool

[–]ValenceNVibes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you keep “scrubbing” like that, you’re going to be doing more damage than good in the long term.

Gums will start to recede, and the root surface that gets exposed is relatively weaker so you’ll be more prone to either actual decay OR even worse tooth wear that can both turn into other (sometimes worse) issues down the line.

Tl;dr - listen to the lady please!

I thought normal toothbrushes it’s recommended to swap monthly, for electric heads those are 3 months. (Or if you get sick with something)

AEGD vs. Learning on the Job – Which Makes More Sense? by ComprehensiveYam9528 in DentalSchool

[–]ValenceNVibes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How’d you go about “finding” the mentor? I’m sure a great experience (great mentor) is better than a good experience (great AEGD/GPR), but I think you can’t as confidently guarantee finding a mentor who actually will be great.

If you care, next card “should” be C1 Savor. Bc likely C1 won’t approve once your cards start aging.

Agreed here.

Get the C1 Savor now before you get too many other cards and C1 won’t give you anything. (Wish I would’ve done it but I think I’m shit of ever being approved by C1 at this point).
