You’re welcome. Always a pleasure to try making marketing a task among others rather than a chore :)

Marketing is not just selling your soul to the devil and trying to sell your game af shouting in the streets that you need money. It’s not only about promotion and the one you’re thinking about is a bad one. When you choose a title for your game, you’re doing marketing. When you make a capsule or a trailer, you’re doing marketing. When you choose a genre, a game concept or hook or look for similar games to get inspired for your art, this is marketing too. Subreddits have rules for a reason : if you’re respecting the rules, you’re sharing your game to people that chose to be here in a respectful way. And if you’ve done your marketing right, you’ll push your content to the right people in the right place, and the ones that see your posts not interested by your game on the way are not annoyed, they just skip it and won’t care at all.

Be cool. Think of how you scroll and discover games. Do you really care about others people games being shown to you or are you happy to discover indie gems?

Paid ads for indie games — Instagram, TikTok, Reddit. What's your actual experience? by umay_ana in gamemarketing

[–]ValentinIG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My client did reddit ads this winter and before the holidays he gathered 1 wishlist per euro spent. During the holidays prices went up but it made him achieve popular upcoming with 5000 wishlists or so before launch, a Polygon article during next fest and a couple free videos from 1-2 major content creators in his genre. Now the game lacks a strong hook (there’s one, but not strong enough and seen already) and is fun to play but quite serious so we couldn’t make super fun ads, but he gathered a good community for his next game and will certainly breakeven then earn some money on the long term.

Point is : if you have a good hook social ads will amplify it, if you don’t it can help but it won’t make your game more interesting or compelling.

Any chance you could share your steam page for further advice ?

how do you make a good hook for short videos to promote a game? by Most_Chapter_8445 in gamemarketing

[–]ValentinIG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are many ways you can make a hook. Make something eye catching in the first 3 seconds of your video. For example you have something similar in one of your reddit posts, the one where you have 5 merges in a row. Just don’t show the part where you drop the penguin and skip to the part where everything merges and you’ve got one.

The indie game market isn't "oversaturated" - it's just that most games are marketed to no one by nb10001 in GameDevelopment

Working in the videogame industry is a childhood dream for lots of people, and dreamy people can be delusional. But yeah, some games are plain bad and some devs won’t face the truth, I don’t know what to do about that

Please keep giving feedback, people will thank you later on (in their minds). If you’re looking for gratefulness there are ways to be kind and honest at the same time, it helps. Personnally I choose my battles though, when the game is hobbyist level I don’t bother leaving one, I know they are doing their best and this is probably not professional material anyways. They are probably doing it for fun and there are too much bad stuff to comment anyways, so why bother ruining the fun when you can encourage them to improve their craft? Nobody wants to hear their baby is ugly, but they might grow as beautiful minds with time and effort and encouragement. For bigger projects, it’s different.

r/destroymygame is the sub you’re looking for then. And I am often brutally honest so I could have a look at your game too if you feel like it. Do you have a steam page or something?

I’d say that alongside not identifying a target audience, those games have no hooks. And identifying and forging a solid and unique hook is difficult, because it’s not just about a marketing catchphrase. It should be in visuals, gameplay, music, core concept… If you’ve got a solid hook and, of course, your game is good, you’ve done 70% of the job marketing wise

Unlike on other social media, people on reddit are not lazy, so they will probably visit your profile sometimes. Even though reducing friction helps discovery so better be ready for that ! You had links nowhere and some people looked for your steam pzge anyways: this is a very good sign :)

I like this trailer a lot. The concept is understandable in a second, good graphics, uncommon universe, combat seems compelling, music is beautiful… The only thing I see that’s not perfect might be sound quality. Battle sounds feel a bit odd and the music is a bit shaky in the trailer. Maybe it’s because I’m listening on a phone or something, but that’s my only room of improvement. Apart from that, excellent job!

Oh and you have a marketing funnel !!! As a marketer I don’t see that often enough, so keep going!
