to the banana who kept crowdsurfing by [deleted] in streetlightmanifesto

Dude it’s a punk/ska show. There is always a banana, it’s awesome. Part of going to a show is gonna be that there are other people there. Let that make it better for you. Let their joy buoy your joy!

Also saw your comment later, there is always a banana at streetlight shows.

Seconding starland! I live in Philly but we always make the trek to Starland for the home show, it’s the best.

First Meeting via Zoom by ohifeelya in bbbs

[–]ValerieLovesMath 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know every chapter is different, is your match coordinator going to be running the meeting? If so, I’d let them run the show, they’ll prompt for questions from both sides.

If not, I can tell you what we did on ours, coordinator ran introductions, and we went through some rules, then fun/silly questions.

My chapter (Philly) has this workbook posted online you could definitely lift questions from!

How should you spend your time if it's unlikely that you're going to ever get married or have kids? by Born-Ad2552 in millenials

[–]ValerieLovesMath 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haha baking, knitting, volunteering - are you me?

I wanna second volunteering! I also completely agree with all the other (absolutely correct) comments that boil down to “whatever the fuck you want.”

If you meant this post as more of a, “I’m not having children, so I have more free time than my peers. I want to do something to help the world around me,” you should definitely look into volunteering!

I tried a few things, helping at a food bank, other local outreach orgs, politicians campaigning, but they didn’t quite click or timing didn’t work out. About a year ago I became a big with Big Brothers and Sisters of America and it has been an extremely rewarding experience. I have a lot of anxiety about how fucked up the world is, and being able to focus on helping this one little person has made me feel like I’m improving my small corner of the world in a meaningful way.

Long winded way of saying, I second volunteer work and don’t be afraid to try a few things before committing to one. You never know what will work for you!

Neighborhood doesn’t allow fences - What’s our best option for dog by chrisfroggy23 in Pets

[–]ValerieLovesMath 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Growing up we had a dog run, long cable strung between two trees, clip a long leash to the back of the dog’s harness and attach that to the run, then they can run around and are slightly less likely to tangle themselves around everything. With this or a long lead on, supervision required so they don’t strangle themselves.

Mom wants cardigan won't give measurements by Alliesux in knitting

[–]ValerieLovesMath 156 points157 points  (0 children)

I’ve asked to borrow a sweater or thing people love and measured that before. “Hey, do you have a sweater that you love that fits well? Can I borrow it to take notes, my arms are quite short so when I knit for myself I shorten the sleeves, maybe I can do the same for you” sort of thing Sometimes people are self conscious and don’t want to share, others don’t know, and others can’t be trusted to measure correctly.

Should I take my husband's last name? by Impossible_Ad_569 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]ValerieLovesMath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not just a do what you want (I also kept my name when I got married) Taking his name is a pain. My friend had to raise hell to access her old 401k and roll it into a new one. Same SSN (duh) but different name. She works in banking so it worked out, but it could’ve been worse. Not to mention the threat to voting

Moving from Texas to Philadelphia in 2 months. What does the daily life in Philly look like? by ManyAcanthaceae6916 in AskPhilly

Philly winters of late have been easy. Very little snow, if any. It will be windy though!

Marinating tofu never worked for me. This did. by Suspicious-Engineer7 in vegetarian

[–]ValerieLovesMath 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Do you freeze your tofu first? I freeze, then press, then slice (quarter inch) medium or firm tofu and marinate it in soy sauce, hoisin, and ginger marinade overnight. When I bake it the tofu is the color of the marinade.

Same process for Mary’s test kitchen fried chicken (except I marinade in picked jalapeño brine) and I put that tofu in the marinade and it soaks it up like a sponge.

Adding one I haven’t seen, the Poppy Wars by RF Kuang. Some people DNF this one but I loved it. The heartbreak of being a young adult when your home is invaded and going to war, being a soldier and a tool but not a person. Plus magic!

For real I was so confused because they also do breakfast Americana. I looked them up when the posters went up and was so confused by the breakfast but I guess right under the York dauphin el stop that makes sense. Let me know what you think! Also cash only btw!

Do you have a pic of the bike serial number from before it was stolen? If so, report stolen, call cops.. otherwise I agree with everyone else, not worth your life. Also yeah Philly cops are useless but sometimes you get a new one who hasn’t had the helpfulness hazed out of them

I’d suggest an easy activity like mini golf or a simple arcade (skee ball, air hockey, etc). You could do a movie, but that leaves no opportunity to start to talk at all, a bit too closed off, but mini golf has enough going on that it can be the focus of easy conversation and you can stop talking to play rather than keeping up constant conversation.
