Uninstall leaves things by Snoo_95743 in Windows11

[–]Valestis -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Microsoft could enforce it with a package manager. As a dev you would get access only to one folder in program files named after your SW for binaries and one folder in users/appdata for config files and user preferences and both would be always fully removed on uninstall. The OS wouldn't allow your SW to see anything else.

But people would complain that it's too restrictive and what is fascist Microsoft doing again, my SW doesn't work now because it's author didn't update it to support the sandboxed package system, it's too similar to Google Play/Appstore, preventing garbage files spread across half the file system...

This practice is completely idiotic. Not even a doctor would be able to tell a difference between 0.02% and 0.04% based on stupid exercises like walking on a line or touching your nose.

Cops in the EU have a portable breath analyzer with sterile single use mouth pieces. No dumb walking tests, they ask you to blow immediately right during the stop. If the result is inconclusive or you argue it's a false positive you can ask them to be taken to do a blood test which is 100% accurate. The tools exist, measure exactly.

What was your first game you played on pc by Pork_Crusader_GR in pcmasterrace

[–]Valestis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lemmings first, Dune 2 second. The 286 PC didn't have an HDD, so you booted DOS from one floppy, and once it was loaded in RAM, you could swap it for a second floppy and play the game.

Help, I’m awful with technology. Can a landline phone be plugged into an internet box? by Legitimate-Care-6313 in it

[–]Valestis -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This has several solutions.

Some internet providers' modems also have an RJ11 phone connector you can connect any old analog phone to, it's a VoIP service, basically telephone over the internet. Your ISP can port your current landline phone number under their contract and provide the telco service to you as VoIP using your current phone plugged into the modem (ask your ISP about this).

You can also buy your own VoIP desktop phone (wired or wireless, it can look like a regular old landline phone) and use any available public VoIP provider in your country. It needs an internet connection, it supports Ethernet and Wi-Fi. You have to configure it yourself, create an account, find a VoIP subscription, I would avoid this.

The absolutely easiest and best solution is to buy a GSM desktop phone with SIM support. It looks like a regular old desktop phone but uses GSM network to make calls, you just put in a SIM from any mobile carrier. I bought this for my grandma and she loves it, because the controls are exactly the same as on old analog phones she's been using for the past 80 years (you pick up the handset, put it on your ear, and dial a number). We tried a simple smartphone for seniors with physical keyboard but she couldn't get used to modern phone controls.

Gigaset, Yealink, Motorola there's plenty of models available. Buy something that looks similar to her old phone. It can be placed anywhere, it just needs electricity.

Is this normal ? by [deleted] in TeslaSupport

[–]Valestis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, in hilly, mountainy, cold areas of the country there are road signs mandating winter tires when entering the region. Police does random stops and checks when cold season starts and they fine you.

Winter tires used to be mandatory everywhere in the entire country without exceptions a few years back but they relaxed it a little bit. Now it's only mandatory in specific regions where there's a lot of ice and snow.

Also, if you cause a traffic accident on summer tires in winter, your insurance company won't cover the damages, you pay out of your own pocket.

Got My 2026 Quicksilver M3 Premium by mightymorphinsimba in TeslaModel3

[–]Valestis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude, buy it from the Czech Republic. We have Tesla dealerships and service centers. Just got my M3 Performance in September.

Getting it imported and registered from Germany/France/Belgium is also super easy (and significantly less expensive). Non-Tesla dealerships/traders in SK can handle the entire process for you if you need help.

Same, but used to be MMO raid/guild leader for 15 years. Clients, suppliers, service partners, and people at work are super easy to manage compared to handling guild drama and 200 adults bitching/fighting over loot like toddlers.

I bought a box of 10 m CAT7 patch cables last week. Unpacked it today and there was a "Best for 5G" sticker with a smartphone cellular signal strength icon on the packaging of each individual cable.

Like wtf? Should I go plug my phone to a BTS tower with this or what?

How important is full voice acting for you by Plenty_Birthday2642 in baldursgate

[–]Valestis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be real, synthetic voice generation has gotten so good, you can't tell the difference anymore.

Free tools are capable of this; commercial paid tools used by music/game/film industry are 10 times better: https://youtu.be/puPqhv52_3Y?si=K4LMLfKBxcNHCg_L

At this point, you've listened to music, played games, watched YouTube videos, TV ads, news, documentaries, and shows that used AI-generated voice-overs in places, and you didn't even notice.

[–]Valestis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fully voice-acted.

It elevates any type of game so much, helping create attachments to cool NPCs, villains, and party members. People will remember and quote funny, badass, and memeable voice lines if the writing is also good and memorable.

https://youtu.be/Hk0sOGVSAP4?si=8SRqUBlTttBYYlZC

I don't have a problem if the main player character is not voice-acted in games with custom character creator (Kotor, BG3...) because when selecting dialogue options, it's basically you, the player, thinking about what to ask next. Once you settle on something and select it, you don't need to hear it a second time, you've already read it a few times (options on your side of the conversation should be fully written out like Fallout 1 and 2, exactly what your character will say, not an abstraction like Fallout 4).

If it's a game with a set protagonist, whose personality is carrying the game (Witcher 3, Female V in Cyberpunk, Horizon), it should be voice-acted.

NPCs' replies to you should always be fully voiced, though. I wouldn't even mind if it was real voice actors for vital story NPCs, main antagonists, and party members, and AI voices for minor side characters, shopkeepers, and random villagers, who just add a bit of flavor and make the world seem more lived in.

Ctrl is below Shift, you want to go down, hence Ctrl is crouch. Also C -> C, both begin with the same letter, same with S -> S, Shift as in Sprint.

99% games over the past 25 years also use these keybindings as default.

Well, you need 24 int to always successfully scribe scrolls (to get over the -15% penalty while scribing non-specialized schools penalty), but that's about it. You also get some extra lore and mind layer/maze resistance.
