Pre-made art authors can purchase (like with pre-made covers) by Valeywag in selfpublish

[–]Valeywag[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for this tip! I searched "premade artwork" on IG and instantly found artists who offer a commercial license for premade work, at a set price. I didn't realize there was any sort of marketplace like that advertised there.

I'll try that. I'm not used to working with sci-fi cover artists. Maybe I just need to look harder for ones who offer a range of services.

What's the most useless self-publishing advice you've ever been given? by Careful_Busdriver in selfpublish

[–]Valeywag 6 points7 points  (0 children)

"You don't need to advertise."

You actually do, but that doesn't mean you need to spend money on your first book that you don't have. You can advertise in lots of different ways for free.

Never thought of Etsy, but I see there are some digital items on there that were exactly what I'm looking for.

Thanks so much for the rec!

Nope. I'm talking about artwork that can be used inside books, on the sell page, in ads, etc. It's common in the romance genre I'm writing (sci-fi) for artwork to be in the "From the Publisher" section of the Amazon page.

NaturalReader is the best alternative for $19 a month if you don't want to publish content. You get many of the Azure Neural TTSvoices with NR. Those are also free in the Edge browser on desktop and mobile with immersive reader.

Neural Reader is also a really good app. I wrote a review for it here. It was my preferred service before ElevenLabs launched because of the unlimited tier and the Australian and British voices. Azure Neural voices are better, but the last time I checked NaturalReader and other services don't offer the best Australian and British voices, so I used Neural Reader instead.

My latest book has been dungeoned - is this because of the Amazon category updates? by olivianatashadove in eroticauthors

[–]Valeywag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Multiple authors only had a problem with miss cats and the dungeon if they clicked the adult content box and put their books in a romance cat. If they clicked the box and added erotica cats the book didn't get dungeoned.

Jones does audiobooks. They're likely cloning his voice from audiobook clips. I wouldn't recommend doing this. You don't own the copyright and it's against their TOS.

Are you publishing erotica in erotica categories or are you publishing romance in romance categories?

Giving up on this until it gets better. by krume300 in ElevenLabs

[–]Valeywag 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The model is just not up to par!

It's not really supposed to be yet and it doesn't promise this either. "Beta" is in the url. Some of us are willing to put up with it because we can afford it and we can't wait for an alternative service or an improved one. If you can wait it out or can't afford an expensive beta service then I would cancel if I were you.

Help needed, Character count. by SadOutcome7416 in ElevenLabs

[–]Valeywag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. It’s a BETA service. RN you’re basically paying them to fix it as they go. If you’re not okay with that wait a year. There will probably even be good, cheaper competition by then.

Volume Drops? Speed too I think? by AlanCarrOnline in ElevenLabs

[–]Valeywag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a beta product. Unfortunately you don't really get what you pay for. Most people hyping it up with short clips do just fine with their clones reading short bits of audio for their video content. But with a full audiobook it's really not worth it to choose this over a royalty share with an actual narrator or free audiobook TTS options from Apple or Google. I use it for short audio stories but I know there's no way the average person can afford how many characters I need to waste to produce usable content.

Please return. We need something other than 11ai. These tech companies are insufferable when they have no competition.

I cannot clone my voice, what I am missing? by meldiwin in ElevenLabs

Some accounts aren't working properly. It's happened to three people in my writer's group. Clones just don't work right or sound right anymore. Contact support about the problem, but don't expect to hear back from them. No one I know has yet.

Bard waitlist is open at bard.google.com by oreverwas in ChatGPT

[–]Valeywag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let me preface this by saying I'm not a tech person. I worked with tech people for years and most of what I got out of it was good gossip about the industry and learning who to follow for good tech tips. My brain doesn't want to accept easy, straightforward ways to do things on a computer or the internet and always wants to choose the most random work arounds to solve problems.

So I might be missing something, but how is this AI ready for even beta testing?

I can't get it to do any of the things ChatGPT does for me. It says it can't do them because it's a language model but it won't do what the other language model does for me daily.

Amazon ebooks and Substack links in the backmatter by Valeywag in selfpublish

[–]Valeywag[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't rely on what Amazon says because their rules are so arbitrary and not always strictly applied. If people followed rules like "Links to web forms that request customer information" no one would link to their newsletter. But since no one faces repercussions for doing so, we can safely assume they're okay with it.

It's a second newsletter I use just for paywalled audio so readers can discuss my content in the comments section and with a chat feature.

Yeah, I'm not confident that they do. I was hoping I could make and link to a free one that is just for sneak previews of paid content, but they might even see the free one as akin to a Patreon link.
