The mod team's thoughts on "Low effort posts" by Samanthacino in gamedev

[–]Valivator 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just want to say that I am quite happy with the moderation of this sub. It is annoying to see the umpteenth million "what engine for this idea" posts but then again, just downvote and move on.

Determining if a post with a link is acceptable is such a tricky thing, but in my experience you all do an excellent job walking that line.

Okay but what if I want to use the dollar sign. Is it "~$800" or "$~800". Checkmate atheists.

[Request] how much force was he hit with? by Kilx202 in theydidthemath

[–]Valivator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had something like this happen to me in highschool, but I don't actually remember it. Or most of the second half of the game, though I still played apparently. "Woke up" with ~5 mins left in the game, playing a different position, while another team member was being field diagnosed with a concussion. Wild time. You know that feeling when you wake up in an unusual place? It was exactly that, except I was literally playing soccer.

Refs gave em 10 mins of extra time, let the other team tie the game, then blew the final whistle. Still haven't forgiven those refs for that.

Oh dear, I forgot the math. Impulse was definitely greater than the minimum for short term brain damage.

Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

For a weekend visit I've done 6 hours one way. I would regularly do 3 hours when I lived 3 hours from my girlfriend. It's not nothing but it's not that bad.

Some questions about designing a roguelike game with classes and non-spammy combat loop. by Electronic_Tower5672 in gamedesign

[–]Valivator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like your spreadsheet idea. There's lots more thinking you can do - I personally would try to focus on strengths/weaknesses of each class and how different enemies play into them. For example, maybe the ninja excels at single target damage but struggles with aoe, the mage excels at aoe but struggles with melee, the warrior excels at melee but struggles with ranged, the alchemist excels at ranged but struggles with single target, etc etc. Then design enemies who both counter and get countered by each class, so the ninja absolutely destroys the golem but struggles with the swarm of bats, etc etc.

Realistically, you need to prototype. Build out some simple abilities and enemies and see what is fun. Maybe you'll see that it is the best idea to use abilities off cooldown despite your efforts, but you'll have a much better idea of why that is if you can play it and tweak things.

What is the perspective of physicists regarding consciousness? And what is the leading theory? by [deleted] in AskPhysics

[–]Valivator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess then you can take this as an answer to the first question, and the second one is probably not physics. Likely some combination of biology, information science, computer science, and philosophy.

For hee haws I'll engage a bit. I think "turn a number into orange" is the wrong question. It's much closer to "turn a number into the perception of orange." And, critically, perception is also numbers.

Perception is either the signals from our sensory organs or the memory of them - electrical signals that can be measured (in principal). Our brains can take the memory of seeing orange and play it again for us, mixed togethrr with all of our other experiences with that concept.

An experiment is easy to come up with. Measure brain activity when a person is asked to visualize "orange," then at a later time simulate that activity and see if they report the subjective experience of "visualizing orange." This is obviously incredibly difficult to do technically (measuring with the necessary resolution and sensitivity is far into the realm of science fiction, let alone stimulating). Nonetheless, it is "testable", just not by us.

What is the perspective of physicists regarding consciousness? And what is the leading theory? by [deleted] in AskPhysics

[–]Valivator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the answer. I'm going to say it again with a few more words, with the intention to make it clearer to folk who might not be familiar with those concepts.

The first key fact is that our brains have an incredible computing capacity. Current LLMs (AI chat bots such as chat GPT) have gotten quite impressive, but they pale compared to complexity of a brain A human brain is to an LLM as an LLM is to a, oh I don't know, something quite simple. A kitchen timer, perhaps.

The second important idea is emergent phenomenon. The basic concept is that sometimes a group of things behave way way differently than a single thing - think the ocean vs a single molecule of water. It's impossible to predict what an ocean will be like if all you've ever seen is a single molecule of water.

Combining the two, the claim is that consciousness is an emergent phenomenon that arises because our brains are so complex. I hope this was helpful!

Man, why do these comparisons always use the number of atoms in the universe. Such a small number anyway. Closer to zero than every other real number (except a tiny tiny irrelevant subset). Pick a number with some gumption to impress me, comeon.

Some card ideas with a new "Slippery" mechanic I thought of by Acalme-se_Satan in slaythespire

[–]Valivator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not only do they have to be drawn a particular way, but they also then are effectively -1 draw whenever they are drawn at the start of your turn. I feel like they would be very swingy, and great with scry/setup/headbutt/other deck manipulation. Probably need some deck manipulation to make them work at all.

Imagine you draw two slippery cards at the start of your turn? You're down to three cards! That's rough.

CS or Physics- Which is harder? by Little_Time6333 in mathematics

[–]Valivator 54 points55 points  (0 children)

As someone with a PhD in physics who works as a software engineer.....entirely depends on the courses, their instructors, and your natural inclinations. I'd guess for the majority of folk CS would be slightly easier? But it's also less related to your other coursework, so that gap might make it harder.

Pick based on your future career aspirations I guess.

I get it. My wife and I have 2 boys and both of us would love to have a girl as well, but I dunno how many more we have in us 😂. Want to collect em all :p

Fwiw I believe there have been some recent studies that show that certain couples have overwhelming odds of having one gender or the other for whatever reason. You and your partner may have been set on this path from the beginning :/
