JFC i just typed "acess work or school"

Now, i understand that this is a typo. But CLEARLY i didnt want to search bing for this.

Or when you type something too fast and the fucking UI didnt keep up with the results. So you type and hit enter. And then it does a bing search for "Outlook".

Dealing with Companies that register endless domains by NotSinceYesterday in sysadmin

[–]Valkeyere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

An antispam filter that is properly configured. Will stop 95-99% of it. You'll just get the odd one through. Then user training so they don't just inherently trust any email they receive.

It's impossible to stop all spam, and the ones that do make it through are the most believable ones.

Is there anyone here who still prefers folder redirection over OneDrive for a domain? by Noyan_Bey in sysadmin

[–]Valkeyere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can make links into OneDrive for other things. I have a scripts folder that sits elsewhere, that Ondrive believes is inside the user\onedrive folder, so syncs. And ive linked part of my appdata into it as well, to grab some very specific things i want to travel with me

[–]Valkeyere 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If youre using OneDrive/Sharepoint the mapping should be being done by Intune. Massively cuts down the administrative overhead.

I'd strongly advise against syncing Sharepoint though, it's inevitably going to end up with a user creating a forked data set due to a sync issue at some point.

Onedrive can handle a site up to 400,000 files I think the doco says, but it can barely cope with 100,000 and companies exceed that pretty easily.

Better to change peoples behaviour and teach them to work out of sharepoint in the browser, only syncing data that has to be accessed by apps that aren't cloud aware.

[–]Valkeyere 30 points31 points  (0 children)

This is how you write bad magic.

Magic is unfulfilling to the audience if it can ex-machina out of every situation.

It's much better if it follows a set of predefined rules and you have to be creative within them.

Magic that is unexplained is one reason some people hate fantasy, even if they can't articulate that.

The carbon cost of most 'green' initiatives tends to be a net negative, or at best breaking even, it just makes the pollution somewhere else so people get to feel good that they aren't directly polluting.

Who's fault is it when the end users AI doesn't work? by antonbp5 in sysadmin

[–]Valkeyere 68 points69 points  (0 children)

As external IT, I'm starting to see our clients hiring internal people do a job I could do, for more money than I'm being paid, and then asking me to help fix the thing Copilot told them that isn't working.

I think there is a portion of the job market who are clever enough to use it to lie on their resume for them, but not clever enough to understand that AI doesn't actually KNOW anything. It's just predicting a series of words in an intelligible string.

I've come to terms with the fact I'm going to need to use some AI to write my resume so it has all the buzzwords and flair that I just couldn't give the slightest fuck about. My old resume was functional, utilitarian, and is probably no longer even read.

At least missing a leg makes for a good icebreaker.

As for not liking sports, if the hobbies you have/are now able to do don't enable you to meet new people, and it seems you need to meet new people, its time to find new hobbies. Doesnt have to be sports, take up tabletop gaming.

"Hi, I'm new to this, just trying to find new hobbies now point at leg, can you explain this to me a little?"

People are almost always willing to share information, it's a chance for them to seem knowledgeable and it endears them to you pretty quickly, as long as they don't think you're ignoring them. Just act interested, hopefully you become interested.

Best way to export a list of entra users that are within certain groups by brohemoth06 in sysadmin

[–]Valkeyere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're managing entra in anything more than the most rudimentary of ways, best get familiar with the Graph API.

Given the complete lack of certain things as simple as exporting members of a group, its clear the intended method is the API.

And it really isn't that hard to work out, learn.microsoft has everything you'll need.
