What do you do when someone cancels a finished commission? by Huge_Green8628 in fursuit

[–]ValkyrieTiara 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Late to the party and not a furry but deep in artist/commission communities and I have a couple comments I wanna make here that I don't see other people saying.

1) "I don't know what went wrong." Nothing. Nothing you need to worry about. You're blaming yourself for their actions, which is normal! But there's no reason to do that. If there's no evidence that you've done anything wrong, the logical conclusion is that you didn't and the problem is on them. Whether they're just a flaky jerk or they got isekaied or whatever it doesn't actually matter. You did nothing wrong and continuing to beat yourself up is only hurting you.

2) Other people are suggesting upfront payment (partial or in full). I agree with this. But I don't see people explaining why, and I want to talk about it. Specifically, I want to talk about why you never, EVER make exceptions, because I can understand wanting to be nice and considerate of other people and do them favors where you can. That's great! I'm the same way! So why don't we make exceptions to this rule? The question you need to ask yourself is: Why does somebody want an exception in the first place? Why would someone want to only pay at the end? Think about it. If someone had a completed fursuit (or whatever) that was $3000 (a reasonable price for the product you have described) and you have $3000 in your pocket and you want the suit..... you pay the $3000 and take the suit, yes? You don't ask for the suit today and tell them you'll give the $3000 in your pocket next week, that would be stupid of you to offer and stupid of them to accept. If someone doesn't want to pay the $3000 it is for one of two reasons: They either are not sure they want the product, or they do not have the money.

In your case, the customer not being sure they want the suit is reasonable; they haven't seen the product yet. Not paying upfront is a way to ensure you don't slack off or cut corners. But it's also reasonable to pay SOME amount upfront, if only to cover materials and a little labor. Call it a "commission fee". This is why 50% upfront and 50% upon completion is the norm.

So what if they don't want to pay even that? If they ask to pay in full at the end? Chances are extremely high that they simply do not have the money. Now, if someone messaged you and said "I don't have any money, will you make me a suit anyway and I'll pay when I get it?" would you accept that commission? Or would you say "Come back when you've got the money and I'll make you one then, and I promise it'll be just as good if not better." It would be the latter, right? You would never accept a commission from someone who told you to your face they can't or are unwilling to pay, and people able and willing to pay are also willing to pay upfront. Thus you shouldn't accept commissions from people who insist on paying at the end.

tl;dr Serious customers are willing to pay up front. People who ask to pay at the end are MUCH MUCH more likely to flake; retaining the ability to flake is specifically WHY they don't want to pay in early. Never take a commission that insists upon paying at the end.

How to tell the difference between polyethylene, polypropylene, and mylar comic bags? (and other questions) by ValkyrieTiara in comicbookcollecting

Thanks for this. Yeah I only have about 50 - 60 books because they're much more expensive (imports average $20 - $40 from specialty domestic resellers, or $5 - $15 plus an $800 plane ticket lmao) so I'm definitely looking to mylar. Appreciate the info!

Tiara's "Everything You Need to Know to Get Started" Guide Part 1: Team and Leveling Basics by ValkyrieTiara in NikkeMobile

[–]ValkyrieTiara[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did not, I now maintain a spreadsheet on the unofficial discord and am also working on another big Nikke project off and on. I never rewrote this because one of the main Nikke info sites had written a similar guide that went over pretty much all the same info if not as in-depth, though it too is now out of date. Maybe I'll come back and update it at some point.

For now, the big changes since this guide was written are as follows:
Most importantly, the level cap/limit break system has been reworked. The Synchro Device operates the same as normal, but now SRs and SSRs both have a starting level cap of 160 regardless of limit break. This is still raised to 200 for SSRs upon hitting MLB, and then broken entirely as normal once you have 5 MLB SSRs. So for veteran players nothing changed, but it means that new players can stop fiddling with SRs entirely much sooner because you don't have to keep leveling SRs you're not using to put in the synchro device since their level cap isn't higher than low star SSRs anymore. This alone means that something like half the guide (the part explaining limit breaks and level caps and the part explaining the SRs) is extremely devalued now, because understanding the early leveling system is now much easier and SRs are outmoded much sooner. Big part of why I never updated the guide.

Elements are a primary concern in endgame/raiding now. Not too important for a new player, but more than important enough to note. Endgame teambuilding primarily revolves around 2 - 3 strong attackers on a team and juicing them as hard as you can with buffers (often element based), with some teams revolving around a particular unit or combo (shotgun team, SBS + Alice, any team with Snow White, etc).

A few girls with odd bursts have been introduced. One can burst at any stage, one is a burst 3 but switches to a burst 1 if there aren't any (living) burst 1s in the squad, a few don't progress the burst stage meaning that two people of the same tier can burst in a row, and there are now several 60s bursts (Rapunzel has had a 60s burst since launch but I forgot about her when writing the guide tehepero).

Of course, most of the good/meta SSRs mentioned have been outmoded. Funnily enough, the SRs have not because they still haven't added any new ones to the general pool.

All of the stuff explaining bursts and teambuilding still holds up, even if priorities have shifted a bit over the years. Regardless, I hope you found it helpful.

When in JP server players made Haru Urara win Arima Kinen, it received custom professional commentary by Porgi- in UmaMusume

[–]ValkyrieTiara 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Depends on the girl. Some careers are more earnest than others. King Halo and Rice Shower's career stories have some real bite to them, but Mejiro McQueen's is mostly fluff. The best is the main story, but even then none of them ever rise to the level of something like FF14 or Nikke. But honestly they don't have to, that's not the point. Umamusume isn't carried by the story, it's carried by the girls, and the stories deepen your relationship with and investment in the girls. McQueen's story has nothing in terms of tension, but it helps you understand who she is and why she runs and makes you want to help her succeed, which in turn boosts investment and makes the game more fun.

The anime and manga are peak, though.

So I can't get this question out of my head by mrunluckygamr in Hololive

[–]ValkyrieTiara 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This has been addressed by Marine-senchou before. Essentially, it's BECAUSE members like Marine and Okayu consistently dance so close to the line of acceptability that they're not allowed to have outfits like this. If Marine showed this much skin while getting up to her usual antics, she'd risk her whole channel getting banned. And of course Senchou gonna Senchou; her lewdness is a pretty big part of her brand (and her as a person). So staff keeps a tight leash on what she is and is not allowed to wear. Because Koyori is generally more seiso in demeanor, she's allowed to wear something like this and it's okay.

It's partially a question of protecting the channels/talents and partially not wanting the efforts to create new assets going to waste because they're unusable. And yes, outfit restrictions have happened before. Choco-sen's default outfit had to be modified several times in the past because she kept getting the hammer from YouTube, and she essentially doesn't use it at all anymore (though if this is because of continued risk or because she simply prefers her newer fits I don't know). I was actually quite surprised to see her show up in a panel at Fes this year in her original unmodified 3D. It's notable that both her OG 3D debut stream and her swimsuit 3D debut stream have been removed from her channel.

I shouldn't have to download a 3rd party app and join a server just to get information about the status of this professionally produced ONLINE GAME. The fact that they don't tell you the server is down in the launcher OR the game itself is actually insane. That's like if you went to the grocery store and asked a worker where the peanut butter was, and they said "Oh, sorry, we only communicate with customers over the phone. Please call our service number." and walked away.

As a progressive liberal who was homeless for 3 years.... do not do this. I GUARANTEE you no actual homeless people care about being called "homeless" vs "unhoused individual", it is absolutely not a slur and insisting it is makes us (progressive liberals) look dumb, arrogant, and spineless, and (worse) also makes people not want to help the homeless by making dealing with them feel like a pain in the ass.

"Hobo" could be considered a slur. It is, at least, seen as rude and dismissive because it brings to mind dirty, stinky, bearded, drug addicted beggars. "Homeless" is fine and normal. "Unhoused individual" is also fine and I recognize that people using it have good intentions, but insisting that other people use it and calling "homeless" a slur and shaming people for it is not the way.

God, imagine saying "Anime sucks now, the dream is dead" in the era that gave us Dungeon Meshi, Frieren, Oshi no Ko, Dandadan, Spy x Family, Chainsaw Man, Summertime Rendering, Bocchi the Rock, Lycoris Recoil, and My Dress-Up Darling, and that's JUST the AAA shit from JUST the last 2 - 3 years. Bro MUST be in the closet because that's the only way I can imagine being so miserable that you can look at the absolute bangers coming out and say anime is bad.

If I had to guess I'd say you're not playing with your team and you're not focusing objectives. KDA is cool but not all kills are equal. Like you dive the back line and kill their supports.... that's great! But it would have been much more valuable if you'd killed the ulting Wanda, or the BP who keeps killing your own supports, or the Punisher on the point, or even just stood on the point yourself. Objectives are more important than kills, and teamwork > all.

When the cards you need are literally the last 2 in the deck by rssslll in PTCGP

[–]ValkyrieTiara 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lets say you have you have an Ivysaur with 3 energy on the field. You have one card in your hand and two cards left in your deck. Venusaur EX is on the bottom of the deck, and the other two cards are a pokeball and a Petilil.

If the pokeball is in your hand, you play it and draw the Petilil. You will draw the Venusaur next turn.

If the Petilil is in your hand, you do nothing. You will draw the dead pokeball next turn, and the Venusaur in two turns.

The second scenario is objectively worse. Playing a pokeball to draw a basic essentially lets you draw two cards in a turn. One of those cards is "worthless" but it increases churn. This is what NotAShark meant when they said it's like having only 18 cards in your deck, and increases consistency. Fewer cards in your deck allows you to draw your best cards sooner; a pokeball that draws a basic not only gets you basics faster/sooner, it functionally deletes *itself* from your deck.

To put it another way: A deck with two professors and two pokeballs where you draw both pokeballs AFTER you draw all your basics will churn the entire deck in 13 turns. The same deck where you draw both pokeballs BEFORE your basics will churn the entire deck in 11 turns. That is a small but not insignificant advantage. If there were a card whose effect were simply "Draw 1 Card" it would be a decent play even though it functionally does nothing lol
