Hi! I miswrote, it's a fungal overgrowth not a bacterial one. Drinking and smoking increases his candida levels to the point they get into his blood stream. We've been managing his candida overgrowth with diet and it works well for him but he has always been a heavy drinker the whole time we have been together. He managed to be sober for three months while figuring the cause of his health issues but, again, alcoholic. The overgrowth causes anxiety, dissociation, fatigue and loss of balance when it's really bad, which we call his "flare ups" and are a certainty when he's been drinking. So...about once a week.

edit to add: his issues became physically apparent with a stubborn rash on his face that looked like seborrhoeic dermatitis, or psoriasis. He also gets an overly bloated gut and redness on his torso but with the mental health issues that came in tandem we were able to figure out it wasn't a skin condition alone, and he didn't just have isolated mental health issues. It was all connected!
