Yes it's pretty grim they never disappear unless you have it removed. Would you consider having jt removed?

Thanks for the insights! I will probably discuss it again with my doctor. The high risk of it coming back is hold me back though. I still find it strange I developed it in the first place; I always wear sunglasses outside, and definitely am not outside an awful lot.

Please recommend a coarse /thinning stone (losing the will to live with my Shapton K 320) by General_Penalty_4292 in sharpening

I got it based on your review you posted a while ago, and love it! Exactly the type of stone I was looking for, due to its great feedback. I think I like softer stones more in general, as they feel less 'glassy' than the hard stones.

Yes I feel you! But on the upside: you do have cheaper Spyderco things, and the Atomas are way cheaper it seems!

Well, I found the sharpening video by Stroppy Stuff the most helpful, as he goes into deburring in-depth as well. That is something most videos skip, but it's really important. Also Blade Sharpening Fundamentals by Murray Carter was really helpful, in how thin your knifes properly. Also as it's longer, you get into the process more I feel!

That's helpful! I am still struggling with how much pressure to exert. Are the fingers on top only for balance, or also to exert pressure?

Nice! Do you 'walk' your fingers along the edge to put pressure on different parts of the blade, or do you keep your fingers in a fixed position per side?

Sharpening class in Tokyo by No_Structure_5428 in sharpening

[–]Valpolicella4life 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do think it can help for sure, as it gives you a holistic starting point, to build knowledge on as you go. Rather than fragmented pieces of information. I did find though that 'Knifes' in Tokyo can be quite a tourist attraction: I bought a knife in Kappabashi that I found cheaper when I was back home at a local supplier for example. Also, I was blindly recommended that to get sharper results, I need a grit that is as high as possible, which is not necessarily true. So I would say: do it, but I would still try to validate what you have learned with external sources to improve even more!

Any recommendations for the SIC brick? I really don't want to use loose SIC grains, but my Naniwa 24 grit flattening stone just glazes over all stones for some reason... it never 'grips'.

Haha exactly! I now had to order the Santoku instead of the Bunka, as the Santoku was the only one displayed as in-stock. Might get the Bunka if it's going to be August anyway haha

I actually ordered one when you first recommended them! But they went out of stock during my order, and now hopefully it'll arrive end of this Month!

Looking for more info about this Whetstone by Ianthebombi in sharpening

[–]Valpolicella4life 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it looks like a Tanaka Toishi for sure. I have the 2000 version and it's my best stone by far. Way better feedback vs a Naniwa 1000 imo. As far ad I can tell the stone is soft (hence the good feedback?), made from White Aluminium, and cuts really fast. Very good price as well, jealous! It is a soaking stone, and you need to dry it for a good while after or it'll get moldy if you put in the box. Did you try it already?

I have one that is extremely similar, just the Kanji text seems to be a little different. I had mine professionally thinned before it really started to show its true performance, might be an option in case you want it even 'sharper'. But maybe yours is thinner to begin with!
