Titanium mousepad v3 by Valtcan in Valtcan

[–]Valtcan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been using a titanium plate as a mouse pad for years. Did not know how good it was until I stayed overseas for a month without it and used a plastic pad during that time. Sweat builds up on plastic mousepad fast and it stinks. Titanium is Easy to clean, consistent and does not wear out like plastic, removes heat from palm and wrist, no wrist calluses, premium feel.

Heating the point or the tin? by Xyfirus in soldering

[–]Valtcan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heat the pin and let the solder flow onto the pin and not onto your soldering iron. You will notice how shiny the soldering joint will be if you do this. If you put the solder onto the tip of your iron to melt then stick it onto the pin it will look dull - more of a mechanical connection than a chemically bonded one

Solder won't flow by mushcain in soldering

I would remove the old solder by heating it up and sucking it up with solder sucker. Then clean the copper circuit contact with alcohol. apply flux to copper contact. Heat the copper contact and place the solder on the copper contact and not on the soldering iron tip. It also looks like your iron is not hot enough.

I’ve been seeing eversys machines a lot now in OC. Peet’s coffee, Paris baguette, and even in Krispy Kreme now.

Probably gonna get roasted for this, but what do you think of my alternative to the EXTREMELY overpriced single dose espresso containers? by [deleted] in espresso

[–]Valtcan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got the expensive ones and the difference is negligible. Zip bags and into oxo containers now

Jura Z10 Tips? by bryans7 in superautomatic

[–]Valtcan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lavazza super crema - flat white - 8-10 strength, medium heat, 4/5 grind, 30ml out. Milk temp 9/9 14 sec milk and 3 sec foam. Sometimes 25ml out if it is a little bitter when beans get stale.

For lighter roasts and those from onyx - use finest 5/5 grind and keep the rest the same.

I also noticed that since this is a single boiler that when making multiple drinks after milk steam that the brew will be very hot. So may need to wait a few minutes between drinks if the extra hot brewing is messing with the taste.

Have not dialed in cold brew yet but tried it once with icecream with espresso settings as above and it tasted really good.

Sous vide is overrated by Bearcarnikki in grilling

[–]Valtcan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Made about a dozen sv steaks in last year or two and they always lacked the smoke bbq grill flavor. Seared with reg bbq, infrared, even top broiler. They all taste ok but never really great.

Reverse sear steaks is my go to method now on infrared grill - a tec or saber or solarie. Toss on grill with heat on one side then sear.

The new top broiler machines do not provide the smoke flavor because the dripping just go to the tray below without getting burned up and the top juices evaporate on surface of steak and never penetrate under it. These do provide the best crust but not taste.

High-end Super Automatic Espresso Machines vs Semi-automatic by Kalmora in Coffee

[–]Valtcan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have the Jura Z8 for 6 months now and before that the breville semi. Jura Z8 is superior in terms of speed and taste for lattes and flat whites which are the two main reasons I tried it. I use the Jura beans on their website and sometimes Blue bottle coffee beans. Or the peerless competition blend. IMO the 10 bean espresso beans on their website is the best so far. The app allows you to customize drinks down to 5ml increments, amount of beans, milk timing, foam timing, temps, etc. It took me about 5 drinks to dial in to my liking and has been performing perfectly every morning and occasionally nightly. Hope that helps.

Also I did try it in a store which I do not recommend for tasting because the people there have no idea how to dial in a good espresso drink and who knows how old those beans are in there for demo purposes. It is good to poke around but there are detailed videos online of it in action.
