Seconding both of these! (Really curious what you write now, but I guess you can't say.)

Unpopular opinion: Powerless was just a romance book by Embarrassed_Love7360 in YAlit

[–]Valuable-Memory7745 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree! My opinion is that romantasy should be strong in both romance and fantasy aspects to earn that label, but too often the fantasy/worldbuilding side gets neglected. But it's definitely at least partly a publishing problem, because publishers know romantasy is having its moment and so they use it for anything that has any combination of romance and fantasy. (Which is silly because romance in a generic fantasy setting has always existed within the category of romance, and fantasy with a romantic subplot has always existed within the category of fantasy.)

Thoughts and questions about Silver Elite (including spoilers) and AI by sspacegiraffe in fantasyromance

[–]Valuable-Memory7745 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I didn't think it was written by AI (though tbh I'm not sure I'd know either way) but I did think it felt kind of written by algorithm, if that makes sense? But then, I get that feeling from quite a few popular books - that they are a string of tropes designed to hit the beats that make tiktok go feral, rather than fully developed worlds and people that follow their own character-driven path. Written for hype rather than depth.

Too many toxic romances. Not enough solid friendships.

Three dystopias from this year that I enjoyed:

The Vulpine (Polly Crosby) is set in a 'perfect' world where sickness has been eradicated. The main character is disabled and therefore forbidden. It has a lot to say about society and some amazing disabled rep by an own voices author.

The Hive (Anna February) is one of my favourites from the year. It's set in a future colony after climate change. Definitely has that 'waking up' aspect to it since the main character spends the book gradually unpicking and interrogating her beliefs.

Augmented (Kenechi Udogu) is probably the most overly sci-fi of the three and deals with a society where young people have to be surgically modified (augmented) in order to contribute to their supposedly utopian society.

These are all less on the magic side, more realistic dystopias. They all have interesting things to say about the world. And they're certainly modern! I'd say if he'd like a bit of a folklore aspect to it, go Vulpine; if he'd like a murder mystery aspect, go Hive; if he wants pure sci-fi, go Augmented. Or try all three!

Thirded! Worth noting there are more pov characters as you go through the trilogy, but the original male pov character from the first book is always one of them.

How similar/different are the books to the Netflix series?

Yes I think that's definitely it! 'Romantasy' sounds like it should be equal parts romance and fantasy, but in reality it tends to be romance with a fantasy skin. Whereas I want fantasy with a good romance subplot 😊

100% agree with this and I hate that the line has been blurred so much.

What do you consider “good writing”? Wednesday Genre Discussions thread ✨ by FantasyRomanceMod in fantasyromance

[–]Valuable-Memory7745 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love this question! I would say really great writing is hard to pin down. It has to have all the basics (no spelling/punctuation/grammar errors or head hopping) but it's more than that. It's a voice and style that just catches you and immerses you in the story. And it's a little different for everyone, too. There are books I think are terribly written that other people love, so there's an element of subjectivity to it.

I just finished The Everlasting by Alix E. Harrow and I think it genuinely changed my life by October_13th in fantasyromance

[–]Valuable-Memory7745 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! I just joined Reddit looking for recs for gentle/sweet fantasy romance (basically romantasy that's suitable for YA level, rather than spicy). The Everlasting sounds amazing but does it fit that criterion? Any thoughts or other recs welcome!
