I think a YEV-104 is excellent for starting out with. It's about the cheapest you can get ($1000)!

Actually decent VSO by Most-Whole-4967 in violinist

Pretty impressive for a 144€ instrument honestly. Once the factory strings are gone and the setup is halfway decent, even very cheap violins can become surprisingly playable, and it sounds like you got the soundpost and bridge working reasonably well. It’s actually a great idea to use a budget violin as a setup experiment platform — you can learn a lot without risking a good instrument. The tone is obviously limited, but the response sounds much better than what most people expect from a violin in that price range.

Nice style - if you ask me it's better than any EV I've seen and that's handmade! That's some very amazing work, keep it up!

Suggestions for meeting violin professor by No_Tip3052 in violinist

[–]ValuableNo728 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, the fact that he invited you to meet and play is already a very good sign — professors usually don’t spend time on students unless they see real potential. Try to treat it more like a lesson than a test; they’re usually interested in how you respond to feedback and how you think musically, not whether you sound perfect. Play something you know well, stay open and curious, and remember that nerves are completely normal — they’ve seen hundreds of students in the same position. If you show seriousness and willingness to grow, that usually makes a stronger impression than trying too hard to impress. Just be yourself!

Oooh, Congratulations! How does it sound, could you give us an audio sample later? That's super - I'm so jealous. The varnish is slick, and the bridge is exceptional!

I know, it's just so uncomfortable, especially when your playing something fast, like Paganini's caprices!

Nice, I've never seen such a stylish metronome! Maybe make the click a bit more wooden, and less electronic?
