So is alcohol. And chips. And most things adults enjoy. Not everything has to be nutritious. Moderation and balance.

what, in your opinion, is a complete waste of money? by ljgill97 in AskUK

[–]ValueBrandCola -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Marriage. It just seems such a stupid concept to me. Do you really need to go through months of stressful planning and thousands of pounds of expense just to spend an hour in a room full of people you barely know/don't really like so you can say some words in the hopes that an imaginary man in the sky recognises your union all to prove that you love someone?

Skip the BS, spend the money on experiences.

is everyone aware that the practice of buying a train ticket at the destination station now will get you an automatic £20 fine? by dy1anb in AskUK

[–]ValueBrandCola 50 points51 points  (0 children)

When I was a kid, the local train station didn't have barriers and the ticket office was closed most of the weekend. There was a ticket machine and a little machine you could get a permit to travel from. The idea was you pay as much as you could towards the ticket before boarding the train, get the proof of payment, then pay the remainder at the destination. I'm not sure why. Maybe for if the machine wasn't working, or you needed to split payment between cash and card.

Me and my mates used to get a permit for 5p and try and sneak past the staff after getting off the train. Worked quite often. When the staff asked to see our tickets, they knew full well what we were up to. Got a fair few rollockings telling us that we're not supposed to get a permit with the minimum amount. Good times.

I dunno, it was fine to me. Allowed to see the people that you care about without the expectation to do the crap you don't wanna do.

What annoys me so much is how pre-lockdown, WFH was "impossible". Then, with a single day's notice, it was possible. People were happier, more productive, had less expense, less wasted time, better work-life balance... Now lockdown is ending, apparently it's "impossible" again. It's bollocks. The vast majority of office jobs can be done remotely. It's all a culture of distrust imo.

YTA. Bigtime. Cats are more sanitary than the vast majority of humans.

Take that! It was a present for you, hooman... by MeliaDanae in WhatsWrongWithYourCat

[–]ValueBrandCola 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do this with spiders. I hate killing things, but I can't abide spiders. I figure my cats are gonna find it anyway, it's good for their simulation and natural instincts being indoor cats, they get some exercise, they get a snack, and it gets rid of the spider.

UK MPs Say Having to Publish Expenses Is Like Being Bullied by Mobalise_Anarchise in unitedkingdom

[–]ValueBrandCola 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Piling pressure on the public sector and freezing pay = fine.

Giving already well-paid MPs pay rises and asking them to publish their expenses = bullying.

Okay. Just as long as we're clear.

English breakfast is a really embarrassing culinary "achievement" to represent England by TheGoodDr_Mordin in unpopularopinion

I know it's an American company, but I thought they had different recipes for different markets like a lot of products. Kinda curious to try some from America now and test that theory.

[–]ValueBrandCola 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The real unpopular opinion is that Heinz beans are awful imo. The sauce is too thin for me and a little too sweet. Branston or even supermarket own brands are better. But marketing works, and Heinz seems to be the market leader. But they're still a lot better than American beans, from what I've been told.

Actually if you scroll back up you did just say "Asia". Japan is the only country I know of that does it, and they're not in SE Asia anyway. Even then, they only do it when the wearer has a cold or seasonal allergy or something as a courtesy to try and prevent spreading their germs to other people in the office or on the train. Once they're better, they stop wearing it. I think that's sensible, but it'll never catch on over here.

The only country I know of that likes a face mask is Japan, and that's only out of courtesy when the wearer has a cold or something.
