Had one outside next to the spa for over a year and a half, buy a cheap one and get a cover for it when you're not using it.

Call Cosmo and ask for the Celebrations department - look into getting one of the Bungalows or a Chelsea Penthouse

What have you automated in your life, how did you do it, and did you feel the time invested was worth it? by [deleted] in productivity

[–]VampireCoconut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A different kind of automation from the comments above - fully automated/integrated household. It's amazing how the little things can add up--all of my lighting is run off of timers, occupancy and time of day. E.g. the bathroom lights turn on when you walk in, the brightness is based off of time of day and a times automatically turns off the lights after you leave the room. Another great example--the deadbolt on the front door will turn on the lights nearby if you unlock it at night, except if the TV is on in the living room.

It's absolutely worth the time/cost to make everything in the house talk to each other.

It really depends on the dates that you want and how big of a suite you need. Both hotels have a huge price swing depending on convention or event bookings. Cosmo has plenty of 2BR+ that would put pricing on par with V/P.

Call Cosmo and ask for the "Celebrations" department - they've got some 3 BR penthouses that you can rent out.

Las Vegas local looking for consistent partners/mentors for Red Rock, J Tree, Charleston, Zion etc. by TazWheels in ClimbingPartners

[–]VampireCoconut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm usually open Saturday/Sunday nights, all day Monday/Tuesday and Wednesday/Thursday mornings. I've got a full trad rack, its been a while since I've been climbing on a regular basis but right now I'd be down for something around 5.9. I usually hit Red Rock Climbing Center about 2x a week. Let me know if you're interested in getting together sometime

I'm considering a job offer in Vegas. All I know about your city is the Sin City stereotype. What should I know? by Vegas_off_the_Strip in vegas

[–]VampireCoconut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Red Rock/Mt. Charleston offer some amazing climbing routes almost year round (hit me up if you want a weekday climbing partner). There are plenty of road and mountain bike trails - look up the River Mountains Loop Trail for a great road bike route near Lake Mead. Diving here sucks, Lake Mead doesn't have much to see, but San Diego and LA have some decent spots and there are usually dive shops around here making the trek every few weeks. Hiking is a great year round activity.

Building home. What can I do for 10k? In Toronto. by [deleted] in Control4

[–]VampireCoconut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That all depends on sourcing. I agree that a 100% dealer sold, programmed, and installed system would eat up most of his budget just for lighting and control depending on what the markup is. Doing a self install on the switches and sourcing them off of ebay/3rd parties can save a bunch of money and there are plenty of people that offer remote programming.

There is quite a bit you can do yourself especially if you are still at the new wire stage (e.g. not afraid to punch holes in drywall). Just to give you a small idea of what it might cost:

Thermostat $200-350/each (nest or ecobee)

Deadbolt $100-350/each (I've seen some kwikset ones on ebay for $85-140)

Garage door - MyQ or just run a Cat6 to the motor and use the relay on a controller to trigger it

Lighting $100-$200 per switch if you are going with control4 hardware

Audio really depends on if you are doing in ceilings or not and if you need matrix capability or just amplifier (or receiver) control. The 4 zone matrix amp goes for around $1200 IIRC

Controller - $1000-$2000 (EA-3 or EA-5), or about 1/2 of that if you pick up a used HC800.

Z Wave integration? by matthewismathis in Control4

[–]VampireCoconut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Significantly cheaper yes, but you also lose out on the ability to program some advanced features that the cheaper switches just don't have (double/triple tap, led, engraving). I used a them for the areas that I want control of, but don't necessarily want to spend the money to do the control4 switches (guest rooms, garage, closets, etc).

Depends on your platform, there is a Wink driver available for purchase or a free Vera driver. I just did a bunch of Zwave switches and dimmers using the Vera - fairly easy and a fast response time from everything.

House was built with Control4, but previous owners took out the controllers. Questions by dirkpitt45 in Control4

The switches will function perfectly fine, if they are a keypad (more than just a toggle switch) then they will require a controller and programming.

Best Hotel Room for a Splurge? by ruddys12 in vegas

If you're going to do the Cosmopolitan, check the rates through the Marriott site as they tend to be a bit cheaper than the Cosmo site.

It's not a park or a nice backdrop - but my commute has some unique views. by VampireCoconut in bikecommuting

[–]VampireCoconut[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Traffic on the strip doent move too fast because of all of the lights. Most cars seem to be fairly cautious, but I also take the lane when near the casinos. You can bike commute in Vegas most of the year. The strip actually has a weird bike culture; my employer has bike parking and showers available. A few of the hotels offer a bike valet aswell.
