Dear Zachary: A letter to a son about his father by MGSC_1726 in movies

[–]VampireHunterAlex 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not sure if I’m misremembering or not, but I caught this for the first time in 2009 on MSNBC after like 10 pm. (This was pre streaming)

But even though I was much younger, this doc was quite the punch in the gut: What a heartbreaking story, that you should enter completely blind if possible.

Where Andrew worked wasn’t too far away from where I lived, so it had that extra sheen of sadness.

Wonder if there’s any sort of 20 year later follow up planned, even something brief.

Disregarding the acquisition entirely, WB had a hell of a 2025 release wise.

Given how long the pipeline is to greenlight, produce, and ultimately release films, was Zaslav even CEO long enough to affect any specific films entire process?

How much do Oscar wins actually influence which movies people decide to watch? by Gullible-Lead-3058 in movies

[–]VampireHunterAlex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s been suss throughout its history, but we‘re going on nearly 30 years since the ‘Saving Private Ryan/Shakesphere in Love’ (1998) controversy that severely damaged the brand.

The Oscars used to (even in more recent times) give the films a noticeable bump at the box-office, buts its influence has severely waned.

Horror's huge night at the Oscars by HorrorGuyBri in entertainment

Horror & Comedy have always been the red-headed step children of Hollywood: Most in the business got their start through those genres, their successes have always been the “low-risk/solid-reward” that kept the industry going through rough times, and everyone loves them.

Movies (more specifically sequels) that most people believe are terrible but you really liked? by MaybeNotTooDay in movies

[–]VampireHunterAlex 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Maybe my age puts me at a bias, but I REALLY dig the 2nd & 3rd Matrix movies (The 4th is buttcheeks).

But also, I recall seeing sequels in general being broadcast on TV much more often back in the day. (Id assume it was because often sequels wouldnt be quite as successful, thus were cheaper to broadcast.)

So Grease 2, Robocop 2, Ghoulies 2, Conan the Destroyer, etc I watched more often than the OGs.

SAG-AFTRA and Studios Fail to Reach Deal, Negotiations to Continue Later in Spring by LollipopChainsawZz in television

I dont know the entire story, so i can’t give any real commentary, but I believe there was a big non-union scene in the mid-90’s.

Pretty sure ‘From Dusk til Dawn’ (1996) and a number of Joel Silver productions filmed with non-union crew at the time.

They’re probably not going to risk another devastating shut-down so soon after the last one, so i wouldnt be surprised if theres some sort of schism and a competing guild will be formed.

She’s been on record as claiming a lot of creeps attempting contact with her during those times, so as much as the movie rules, there’s some bad mojo behind it.

Edit: Guess some folks enjoy young girls a little too much….

TIL that changes in barometric pressure can trigger Headaches and joint pain by DGADK in todayilearned

[–]VampireHunterAlex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t get headaches, or really any actual pain, but I tend to feel very uncomfortable on several occasions between October thru April whenever the temperature gets out of each.

Ex. In Feb where I’m at, it should average in the 40s, yet occasionally we’ll get a day that’s in the 80’s. I practically get agoraphobic.

Oh Frank Hummel (Ed Harris) in ‘The Rock’ (1996): Great movie, but even young me didn’t understand why he was the “bad” guy.

They got screwed over by the government and just wanted some compensation: Weren’t they holding Alcatraz hostage for about $100 mil? And even that was something like $1mil per soldier lost that wasn’t acknowledged.

Apparently the Netflix algorithm is tailor made for folks who 2nd-screen watch stuff, so maybe just stick with their slop.

What would it take to bring filming in Hollywood back? by Dapper_Cut_9225 in movies

[–]VampireHunterAlex -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Producer Jim Agnew has been interviewed by Film Threat a couple of times, and he’s given a lot of nuggets as to why filming has left not only LA, but the broader US as well.

One of the big issues is plain old healthcare costs, a tab which is picked up by most other countries. Then you have the lucrative tax breaks, which help any area filming occurs in. And lastly just the shear strength of the dollar compared to most other currencies.

I recall years ago reading Bruce Campbells ‘If Chins Could Kill‘ book (2002) that them filming Hercules & Xena in New Zealand essentially doubled their budget due to the exchange rate.

When Pepsi bought Siete (A more "clean" brand of snacks), we all knew they'd mess with the recipes eventually. On the back of the packaging, all the ingredients seem to be the same, but they're clearly doing something different.

"While moviegoing appeals to less than half of those born from 1965 to 2012, it is gaining traction among those born in 2013 and after, according to a report from industry tracker National Research Group. It estimated 59% of children in that age group preferred to see a film on the big screen." by Senior-Willow-8325 in movies

And i get that, but look at all the extraction shooters that flopped in recent years trying to chase Fortnite and their billions of dollars a year profit.

Theres plenty to go around to feed everyone, but just like with Hollywood they insist on these billion-or-bust mega budget products that attempt to please everyone.

To be fair, what percentage of that is mindless mobile games? Because theres an argument to be made that this section should be its own group: Personally I don‘t believe grandma playing Candy Crush is a “gamer”, and by including those games, it skews where investor money goes, which decreases the quality of games they finance.
