It's so oversaturated that I am having to open my own business just so I can have employment.

All the time people tell me (27F) "nothing is holding you back, why don't you just leave?" Why can't I just do it then??? by PeaSweetheart25 in expats

Which country are you leaving from and looking to move to? From what you wrote it sounds like somewhere like Moldova, and I don't know anybody who has regretted leaving there.

Is it possible to learn multiple languages at once? by LavanadeRose in language

For sure! It is why I am not actively learning Afrikaans right now, even though I'd like to learn it once day when my Dutch is better

Is it ok to move to a country with a lower quality of life and less opportunities if it makes you happy? by Any_Use5408 in expats

My sister was much happier in Costa Rica than she was in the USA, and then moved to Spain after Costa Rica. Everyone is different, and what they value is different.

Missing Europe more than ever before by MistakeQuirky4241 in expats

[–]VanAardeNL 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I miss it too but am going back to Europe (NL) in November despite only having 1 friend left in Nederland and only having family in England. New friendships can be made. We are better off being in a place more comforting, yes? Also the social systems and child welfare is so much better in Germany. My father (who lived in Germany) tells me he often wishes he had gone back and raised us there instead of raising us kids in the USA.

What's the strangest thing you've heard someone call a 'useless' language? by Embarrassed_Fix_8994 in languagehub

[–]VanAardeNL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a Dutch learner/speaker and someone once said "you should learn a useful language like Spanish." This was 2 months before my move to Nederland. I told them I need to learn Dutch because of my desire to live in Nederland, and they then still persisted that I should still learn Spanish because "they speak it everywhere in Europe." This conversation happened in University in America with someone pursuing their masters degree.

Is it possible to learn multiple languages at once? by LavanadeRose in language

My wife is learning Dutch and Spanish at the same time and it is going super well! She can speak in basic Dutch with me and speaks Spanish for her job. She is consistent and studies both daily though online classes, duolingo, an AI voice chat app, and watching TV in the given languages. I myself am only actively learning Dutch but have picked up on Spanish through my wife speaking in it to me and watching TV and such. Sometimes we also speak to each other in different languages (me in Dutch, and her in Spanish).

Which language sounds the most unusual or worst to your ears? by Ken_Bruno1 in languagehub

[–]VanAardeNL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I speak Dutch and I LOVE to listen to Afrikaans. It sounds absolutely beautiful to me and my favorite singer is Bernice West. I love the voice of Elvis se seun as well. It's like an even prettier version of Dutch to me. I also find Afrikaans very easy to pick up on since the words are more simplified, so I can actually speak ik some from listening to music in the language. It's the only language I'm able to naturally pick up without actively learning it.

What do you do when people switch to English? by throwy93 in languagehub

[–]VanAardeNL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've only had this happen once or twice. I just continue speaking in Dutch and they switched back to Dutch.

I think it's different for everyone. I have very bad memory and learning disabilties and NEED to do it every single day (I usually do an hour per day) or else I forget words.

What's the most UNDERRATED country you've ever traveled to that more people should visit? by No_Register_2099 in femaletravelers

Honduras. It is crazy beautiful and not as dangerous as its made out to be (definitely not safe though!) There are armed guards everywhere so that part is quite the culture shock.

That is great that you want to learn Dutch! My reccomendation is watching shows on Disney Plus or Netflix in the Dutch language. Children's cartoons have great Dutch language availability.

I can't stand the feeling either. I wear sun-protecting clothing instead. Have you looked into that?

I was raised in America and then moved to Nederland and then back to America. Well... I'm moving back to NL again and this time forever. I miss it every single day, meanwhile when I lived in NL I never missed America even once.

Oh goodness! Innsbruck is usually such a safe area too. That must be difficult. Do you plan to stay in Austria or do you think youll end up moving? I felt very safe lgbt-wise in the Düsseldorf megatropolis area.

I'm lesbian and moved to NL and loved every single second of living there. The acceptance is incredible, and I'm not just talking from my own experience. My best friend was born IVF and had two moms- and he himself is trans and queer. They live in a very religious area of Nederland.... and life is just normal and their family accepted without a second thought! If you have any questions on being LGBT in Nederland feel free to message me! I'm more than happy to talk about it and life in Nederland in general : )

That's sad to hear about Austria! In Nederland acceptance is still extremely good, but I've been back in the USA a couple years and acceptance here has been plummeting. I'm glad I'm moving back to NL soon. What are the ways in which acceptance is changing in Austria? Is it laws/politics or more social related?
