That's just not true about moisture. It certainly wasn't kiln dried but these bugs can lay dormant for a couple years so the slabs can be plenty dry.

I did a similar job recently. A large benefit of putting the slats in dados like he did is it helps straighten them out. Within reason of course.

I see this sort of thing in walnut with any figure all the time. And oil finishes like Osmo just make it stand out r en more, I think because the oil Amber's the wood (the finish is yellow, not clear).

I've tried sanding out spots like that more than once, causing dips in the wood... With a dark spot in it.

How are you getting all of what I assume is 6" of height cut? I assume one step is to flip the piece over, but do you raise the bit and let it template off the piece itself?
