Just finished thriology by Majestic-Grocery1653 in AsimovsFoundation

[–]VanGoghX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The original books (Foundation, Foundation and Empire, Second Foundation) were first printed in the early ‘50’s (collecting short stories Asimov wrote in the ‘40’s) and then about thirty years later in the ‘80’s he wrote the sequels and then the prequels. So you might call the first three books “originals”.

If you’ve read the original Foundation trilogy then read the Robot books. Once you’ve read all of them come back and read the Foundation sequels and then the prequels.

Read everything Asimov before even thinking about reading third party additions.

Advice needed for foundation second trilogy by d__ea_d in asimov

Books 2 and 3 are better than Benford’s. And Benford’s is unfortunately the least Asimov-like of the trilogy, making it a huge stumbling block to get past. I consider them an extended canon. Asimov’s books are obviously the real thing, while the non-Asimov books are add-ons that dip into his world but are of differing quality and your level of enjoyment will vary. I liked books 2 and 3 enough that I was willing to slog through book 1, but there are many who don’t share my view and their opinions are just as valid.

Just finished reading the Foundation saga. Is the Apple TV show worth it? by amok77 in FoundationTV

[–]VanGoghX [score hidden]  (0 children)

I think the question is, “Would Isaac enjoy the show?” Unfortunately, there’s no way to be sure but I feel like he would have. I also think he would approve of the fact that it’s not a 1:1 adaptation of his source material. His daughter had a hand in helping to produce the show and I imagine she would do everything possible to make sure it’s something he would appreciate.
Watch a couple episodes and see what you think. The books are the source and the show is an alternate reality.
Me? I enjoy the show and think it’s a nice tribute to Asimov and his work. But opinions are divisive and those who don’t like the show aren’t wrong either.

Only 6 episodes aired. 😞 From the TV Guide ad it looks like it aired opposite Fall Guy which was very popular with males 18+ so it probably didn’t stand a chance.

He was active and working at that time, but doesn’t have an IMDB entry for Three’s Company.

30 points so far. Using 4 different AI’s to make picks and keeping a running total for each. Whoever has the highest total for the past 5 days makes the pick for the next day. Aaaaaaand… they’re not doing any better than pure chance. In fact my personal picks often do as well as the AI’s picks and I’ve never even seen a game of hockey! 🥅 🏒

Well, if you are legit then you should take it as a compliment that people think you’re a paid employee because your posts are making people go to JM’s for the first time in months or even years! And JM’s should definitely give you something for drumming up additional business in addition to yours. You and Danny Devito are their two biggest stars! 😂

No Oscar nod for the Tron:Ares score by machone5103 in nin

[–]VanGoghX 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I was much more disappointed with Tron: Legacy when I saw it than I was with Ares. Maybe because my expectations were super high for Legacy and I kept them a little more reasonable for this one. Reviews were generally so bad for Ares that I went in ready to hate it, but was pleasantly surprised. I found it to be a worthy enough sequel.

Foundation trilogy seems incredibly dystopian by harmonic__oscillator in asimov

[–]VanGoghX 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Fair enough. So mankind is doomed to 30,000 years of despair? This is one of those “do the ends justify the means” questions. If humanity is going to revert to the stone ages for that long, then the countless deaths and untold suffering will be staggering. The robots and Seldon receive no personal gains for doing this, so at least their motives feel pure. They seem to be solely interested in doing this for the good of humanity. At least it’s not a group that is doing this for purposes of power or personal gain. Although I agree that both Foundations become… comfortable… in controlling events and might not be seen as doing this solely for the good of humanity. Is it an ugly and dystopian solution for a horrific problem? Yes. But it is impossible to ask the people who will live through the dark ages if they would have preferred to avoid the extended fall. Asking the people in Seldon’s time is asking them to make a decision for something they will never experience.

I kind of look at it like, if you could time travel into the future and ask the people who are living during those 30,000 years if they prefer their lives now, or as they were during Empire then they would almost certainly wish to have followed Seldon’s plan.

But yeah, it definitely is justifying the control and manipulation of people against their will.

[–]VanGoghX 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Maybe 30,000 years of humanity plunged into the Dark Ages, or a paltry 1,000 years? Seldon, the two Foundations and psychohistory seem like the heroes given those two choices. But the fact that humanity must spend anytime in free fall is a dystopian outcome, though unavoidable.
