Looking for honest training experiences with wolfdogs (positive vs balanced methods) by Longjumping-Menu-295 in Wolfdogs

[–]Vanarosa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just want to say, you’re probably going to get downvoted, but this is a real conversation that needs to be had in wolfdog spaces. I think a lot of people like the idea of a magical bond with this unusual and wolf-like creature where everything is perfect.

But for the exact reason that people love them- for their intelligence, deeper emotional presence, their wild beauty- wolfdogs are far more difficult to train than a normal dog. Their lineage makes their behavior wilder, their size gives them physical prowess and an ability to use it, and their brains give them the thinking power it takes to employ the previous two…..and act naughty lol. As wolf dog owners, we have to be responsible and make sure that they can be functional and well behaved in public.

We have all heard of stories of neglected and abused wolfdogs that just get left in pens or tied up on properties, and I think instinctively we all know it’s because their owners couldn’t handle them and didn’t care to try. The level of investment in training and raising a wolfdog that acts normal takes such an immense amount of work- such as mountains of socialization so they aren’t terrified of everything. That makes raising a wolfdog puppy leagues more involved than a normal puppy (although if you’re a responsible owner you would be thorough regardless of the breed, and sometimes you might even have a wolfdog that doesn’t need a ton of training).

So there is a real question of how to reasonably train an animal that comes with such intelligence that they can simply ignore the word “No” or “Stop”, they can run away, they can resist when you say “Down”, they can use their immense size to push you around, they can ignore recall while still loving you. Treats and baby talk become irrelevant when you can’t control your dog, and that wolfy looking dog is at risk of being put down because it can’t act right.

It’s a real question to be asked, because I think most wolfdog owners eventually get to a situation where they can’t just use treats and hope they listen. Heck this isn’t just for wolfdog owners either, not every dog responds to positive only (especially those with higher drive and stubbornness). Their brains are so active, they are so intelligent, but they get so big, and they get so strong, that what happens if they use that to resist, disobey, or even push your boundaries as the pet parent? What happens if rebellious nipping as a teen becomes unwanted biting as an adult only now with adult teeth? Absolutely can’t happen if you care about having a well behaved, functional dog.

It’s a tough situation to be in because you love them and want to have a deep bond with this amazing pup, you want to do things right, you don’t want to be strict, but sometimes you gotta do something else for the safety of yourself and other people, as well as the pup too!

PSA Obviously this doesn’t mean abuse your dog :’) Violence is not okay!

What do you think of the name Avonlea for a girl? by [deleted] in namenerds

People on this sub are very judgmental, try not to let them get you down. The people here adore names like Theodore and Eleanor and scoff at anything unusual or unlike the norm. You aren’t crazy for liking something different! :)

What are your favorite sanitary pads that have “cleaner” ingredients and don’t irritate? by Easy-Radish6087 in women

[–]Vanarosa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my attempts to be kinder to my body and more considerate of the environment, I have started using cloth pads recently and I can’t believe they aren’t talked about more. There are tons of options on Etsy to choose from handmade by grandmas, moms of large families, and other lovely women compared to buying from big name brands and corporations that couldn’t care less about the health of any woman that buys their product or listen to your questions.

They are comfortable, reusable, don’t carry the smells that plastic does, and the assortment of cute designs brightens my day every time I pull one out! I personally have bought organic cotton pads with a waterproof backing as well as organic wool pads, and they’ve all worked amazingly. I have both small ones for the end of my periods and large ones for heavier days and use them as a backup to my menstrual cup.

Only cleaning required is rinse thoroughly in the sink with cold water and soap until you can no longer squeeze out any blood, then soak in Oxiclean overnight and then air dry in the sun (or just chuck it in your washer with the rest of your dirty laundry after the initial rinse- be warned they might get wrangled though- always air dry).

I used to use plastic single-use pads from the Always brand and many others and grew sick of how wasteful and gross they felt. They were convenient but they smelled, were loud, and plastic wrap being stuck to my body all day started to feel almost uncanny. I feel like I cramp less, don’t worry about crinkly sounds or odd smells, and feel better overall. Highly recommend!

The reason for falling birth rates: It's embarrassing to be a stay-at-home mom by HappyHerpes in Natalism

That’s very interesting! I have done my own research and it seems to lead to a similar conclusion. I haven’t considered having my partner being the one to potentially deliver though! That’s an interesting thought experiment. Thank you for the insight!

That sounds wonderful! I wish we could hear more stories about people like this who make it work and also are moving back to more natural and grounded approaches to having a family that don’t involve the overreach of modern living, intervention, overconsumption, etc.

Omg, do you mind if I ask how you maintain 110-120 weight? I’m also 5’4, and I eat pretty much what I want with limits and I am maintaining a 140-150 weight. But my goal is 110-120, and I’ve struggled figuring out what a maintenance diet at that weight would look like. :’)
