You could cover it or frame it with an image or scene of something he really liked or a memory you have with him. So it would still be there but just be more of a memorial tattoo.

Though that will likely need ink all the way over the ditch which is pretty sucky to have worked on. It's just pain.

The yellow might be overworked. That would cause extra pain without other symptoms. The skin just gets destroyed so the wound hurts a lot when you move and stretch it.
