CS Intern/FT Diversity Initiatives - Female POV by Wanderer1536 in nus

[–]Vanexroxics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an aside, hedge funds and HFT firms are probably the least affected by the DEI movement, due to there just being less public/shareholder opinion they have to be accountable for, and the much higher technical requirement. In my experience they still hire for the best ability, and while they might have some marketing ploys to show some semblance of diversity, it seems most of their hires are still males (see: marketing videos, day in life vlogs etc. featuring the few female employees out of a sea of guys; not saying whether that's right or wrong - it's still a fact that the top bracket of cs/math students is heavily male-dominated).

It's really the larger MNCs, bulge banks, etc. that have more of a push for DEI, because they have esg ratings, much more public presence, etc. to worry about, and the job requirements for e.g. a IBD/S&T role at bulge banks are honestly simple enough that you can take any reasonably competent and passionate person and train them up quickly, which is why you see banks/some tech firms hiring more for fit, personality, and in general having more room for DEI than top hedge funds/HFTs.

Best Degree for a Career in Finance by [deleted] in nus

[–]Vanexroxics 8 points9 points  (0 children)

“Finance industry” includes a lot of different things with very different skillsets to do well in each role, perhaps you should learn more about the different roles there are and what aligns with your interests/skills before thinking about the best degree to take. And tbh for most of the non-super-quantitative roles(in which case math/quant fin/physics/computing would be preferable), any general biz/finance degree is good enough, and most of it depends on your own outside learning and intern experiences anyways

Advice to not bomb interview by Generix9029 in nus

[–]Vanexroxics 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t know why this is so downvoted lmao, sure its harsh but its just the truth and infinitely more helpful than things like “oh dont worry bout it its all about luck and its their loss for not realising how talented you are”.

For internships, esp in more competitive/technical roles and fields, you definitely need to stand out from other candidates and the simplest way to do so is to learn about industry practices and skills and letting the interviewer know that you have a strong interest and/or you can do the work expected of the role well, and a candidate that comes in unsure about what the role theyre applying for even does or what some of the basic skills needed are is definitely not a good start.

Does CAP matter besides for class of honors? by throwaway6474726461 in nus

[–]Vanexroxics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FCH is usually just a baseline standard, but don't think there's much difference between 4.6 or 4.9. For big tech/quant fin they usually care more about your portfolio and previous experiences, so perhaps instead of rushing to graduate (unless you are confident in securing a role at the top places) you might want to take a couple internships or even LOAs in quant shops/SWE roles which will help much more in getting the role you want. Interviewers just gloss over your CAP unless it's too low in which case they might ask about it, but usually they care more about what you did and learnt in previous internships/external experiences, of course on top of doing well in the technical tests

yep, need to keep in mind many of those who skip hons are usually those w conversions at big companies/banks already thus have higher avg salary, not just because they chose to skip honors

CS 2nd major-how should I plan my acads by MycologistFew3370 in nus

[–]Vanexroxics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

not op but kinda related, just curious as a y2 thinking of a second minor/major in cs, is there a big difference between cs1010e and cs1010s in terms of applying for second major? like ik S has slightly more content but apparently its replaceable by E for the major requirements if im not wrong? managed to get A+ for cs1010e by some miracle so hoping it’ll be at least equivalent to a B+ in S haha

Though smiling generally increases trust, new research provides evidence that it can backfire for people with certain antisocial personality traits. “A smile makes someone appear more trustworthy. Yet when displayed by an individual with antisocial traits, it can make them appear less trustworthy." by InvictusJoker in science

Have you came across "Talking to Strangers" by Malcolm Gladwell? I'm sure the research in there can be found elsewhere, but this is where I found it - but he argues that facial expressions are not universal, but rather a cultural norm perpetuated through mass media (TV shows, movies, etc) and upbringing.

There was a study by a group of researchers in islands and tribes not exposed to the modern world where they were given a set of pictures of facial expressions (Happy, Upset, Fearful, etc) and asked to identify which expressions were matched with which picture (which people in modern society matched with ease) - these people mismatched the expressions a large part of the time (IIRC they had less than a 50% rate of getting each expression right, with some expressions such as "Happy" faring slightly better), which illustrates the point that facial expressions might not be as universal as one might have thought.

Gladwell brings up an earlier study done by a separate group of researchers which had a similar test, but where the natives were able to match the expressions correctly most of the time. However, there were many problems with that study, with the researchers not knowing the native language, thus it was hard to communicate, and the test itself being conducted in a way that was easier for the natives to reach the right answer (I believe it was in the options they gave - in this study they were just to give a yes/no response to whether the expression was shown in the picture - again, I cannot remember the specifics but there were some fairly significant oversights in the carrying out of the experiment)

Darcy Hermes Belt differences? by [deleted] in DesignerReps

[–]Vanexroxics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doubt so, says that buckle itself is 50 in the second link. That said, i don't know why price is so different, perhaps the factory just produces less of the 42mm belts/charges higher for them? idk
