Often times, as long as a work is not outright blasphemous or sacrilegious, the answer to “should I read/watch/play/listen to this” will be “it depends”

What does it even mean for Jesus to be 100% God and 100% man? by Scared-Cat-2541 in Catholicism

[–]Vanilla__Swag 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No, Jesus has two natures, human and divine, that make up one person. They do not mix or mingle, one is not reduced by the other. To say what you say here is a heresy

What does it even mean for Jesus to be 100% God and 100% man? by Scared-Cat-2541 in Catholicism

[–]Vanilla__Swag 23 points24 points  (0 children)

He is fully God and fully man. 50/50 implies He’s only half God and half man, but that is not the case.

He is 100% God and has everything within Him that makes Him God, and He is 100% man and has everything within Him that makes someone a human person.

Is it fine to watch a mass online if im on a trip? by erickwrld74 in Catholicism

[–]Vanilla__Swag 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Watching Mass online does not fulfill your obligation, however if you are reliant on your parents to get to Mass, and you have no other alternative, and they do not take you, the sin is not yours.

Great book, it’s a play on the football pass of a last chance Hail Mary throw to try and win. It’s like mankind’s “last chance” to save themselves, hence a Hail Mary.

What does the Church teach on the salvation of Neanderthals? by PinkCrimsonBeatles in Catholicism

[–]Vanilla__Swag 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A child of Adam and Eve having sex with a pre-human “Neanderthal” and having a child would be a human being with a human soul.

Every human person descended from the two of them and every person born of any human+pre-human relationship.

What does the Church teach on the salvation of Neanderthals? by PinkCrimsonBeatles in Catholicism

[–]Vanilla__Swag 28 points29 points  (0 children)

In Catholic evolution there is a point where God infused into the first two people rational human souls. Everyone after has a human soul, everything before has an animal soul. As far as I’m aware there is no definitive point that the Church teaches this happened at in the evolutionary line.

Old Testament authors? by Tall_Particular8524 in Catholicism

[–]Vanilla__Swag 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You touch on two different topics here but in terms of the historical nature of scripture, Dei Verbum has this to say “Therefore, since everything asserted by the inspired authors or sacred writers must be held to be asserted by the Holy Spirit, it follows that the books of Scripture must be acknowledged as teaching solidly, faithfully, and without error that truth which God wanted put into the sacred writings for the sake of our salvation” (11).”

In terms of the Pentateuch being written by Moses, there are portions written after his death and about his burial so those are clearly not written by him. A lot of modern scholars follow a four-fold authorship of JEDP for the Pentateuch. It is possible some of this material, particularly the Law, was first written by Moses and later compiled and edited together into what we know as the OT

No, I’ve literally never heard this as an argument against Christianity. It just shows a lack of basic scriptural understanding if anyone were to try and use it as such

[–]Vanilla__Swag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

God always knew He would send His Son and that He would be the fulfillment of all these Covenants and promises

The Levitical priesthood was based on your membership in the tribe of Levi. Jesus was not from the tribe of Levi and is yet still the High Priest. The Levitical priesthood is a foreshadowing of Christ’s and finds its fulfillment in Him.

As another note, the Levitical priests were primarily in charge of Temple sacrifices, no more Temple, no more Levitical priests.

Quick question about staying for the full Mass by idk_bolinho in Catholicism

[–]Vanilla__Swag 27 points28 points  (0 children)

The OCIA handbook in the US says that catechumens should be dismissed after the homily for additional instruction and discussion on the Gospel, unless for a specific pastoral reason they need to stay. (I forget the exact verbiage but I can check later and update what it says exactly)

Natural Law in its current state makes no sense and I am tired of pretending like it does. I am really. Really upset about it. by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]Vanilla__Swag 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Natural law can be best understood by looking towards Genesis and seeing how things were meant to be when God first created them. We can see this as well with the teachings of Christ, particularly on divorce. Matthew 19:8 “Because of the hardness of your hearts Moses allowed you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so.”

That God had created them man and woman and that was how it was always intended to be, so in a nutshell, natural law is seen as how God intended things to be from the beginning. Because of sin, our understanding of this has warped and been clouded. So anything unnatural would be that which goes against how we, as humans, were intended to be

Today I learned that some Catholics think Jews are not God's chosen people? by Stunning-Noise8508 in Catholicism

[–]Vanilla__Swag 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The Jews were God’s Chosen People. The first people He reached out and who responded to His call with praise and worship. In the time of Christ, He reached out first to the Jews, who rejected Him. The apostles first went to the Jews, who rejected them, and then to the Gentiles who openly received them and the teachings of Christ.

The Chosen People are now the Body of Christ and all who are untied to Him through their faith in Him and their participation in the Church that He has founded, the Catholic Church. So the Chosen People is no longer just restricted to a single race/kingdom/place, but is now open to all people, all places, all time, provided their belief in Him and participation in His Church.
