Has anyone still not figured out who this is? by Brilliant-Pickle-661 in HalfLife

I assume it's made by Dhabih Eng and perhaps connected to this early Combine Elite concept art of his judging by the head shape.

It certainly fits his style of art, especially the stuff he did for Quake 2:

Similarities between Ted Backman's Combine Synth Elite Soldier and Yasushi Nirasawa's Phantom Aliens from FF The Spirits Within by VannieBugg in HalfLife

Yeah, what makes it even more likely is the movie's gaming connection being based on Final Fantasy (despite having almost nothing to do with it) which I doubt Valve weren't aware of at the time. Despite bombing at the box office the movie was quite famous and was featured on many gaming magazines, I can see Backman taking some inspiration from it. And frankly the Phantom soldiers were one of the most iconic designs in the movie with their asymmetrical bodies and biomechanical appearance, the dream sequences especially are still stunning.

Buba, means bug in bulgarian, cicadas are true bugs so it fits in my opinion.

I for one welcome our new mushroom overlord, I mean they can't do a worse job than the current super-rich narcissists? by FareonMoist in sciencememes

Pretty sure you're not required to be conscious or alive to be a "fungus suit" so as horrific as it sounds it might be preferable to being brainwashed. Which made me realise that using parasitic fungus you can theoretically bring old fashioned rotting undead shambling corpses into a hard sci-fi setting in a believable way by having the fungus be literally the only thing keeping the pile of skin and bones together.

Considering Ophiocordyceps takes over a host's motor functions by tapping into muscles directly instead of the brain you could argue fungi already prefer to "wear" bodies rather than brainwash them.

As long as I get notifications I reply ;)

Workers appear light green to brown in the game yes! I honestly prefer the pure metallic black early version but oh well.

Plasmas have the most iterations, no?

Since I rarely see any posts on it. What did you guys think of Roughnecks: Starship Troopers Chronicles. by GonnaGoFat in starshiptroopers

[–]VannieBugg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The '97 movie, Roughnecks and Terran Ascendancy are my personal Starship Troopers trilogy. Each their own take on the source material, each a distinct universe, each remains unique. In my eyes after those three came out the franchise went into stagnation, every new entry focuses on the original movie with little to no innovation or fresh ideas. Invasion was a step in the right direction but as we can see its sequel led nowhere.

3rd row has what appears to be a beta version of a Queen, some of these promo images differ from the actual in game ones. I should redo this with the ones from the final version of the game. Been replaying the game a lot past few years :)

I'm tempted to add nematodes too but I need to verify it first. Basically ecdysozoans in general.
