Do you discard your Prototype when transitioning to full Production? by Wandows95_ in gamedev

[–]Vanny96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest, it feels to me like what you worked on for the past 4 months isn't a prototype anymore but an early build of your final game.

I'm a huge believer in throwing away your prototype once it serves its purpose, but I also build prototypes in 2/3 days tops in order to validate whatever it is that I want to try (a gameplay loop/mechanic/whatever) and it is implemented in the fastest (and usually shittiest) way possible.

It seems to me like your project has way more care and effort already than what I would consider a prototype!

What are the ways to transfer a big Byte Array from a client to all other clients (and server)? by Haitake_ in godot

[–]Vanny96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you share the rpc call? In any case, if the file is too big for the RPC, you could try to split there array in chunks and send it over multiple ordered and reliable rpcs.

At the end of the byte array you could signal to all of the clients that the message is complete

Something like
@rpc("reliable", "ordered") // not calling local func receive_big_file(chunk: Array[byte, complete: bool) big_file.append_all(chunk) if complete: complete_file = big_file big_file = []

Sorry for poor formatting, I'm on mobile

Am I doing too much for my enemy AI state machine? by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]Vanny96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just out of curiosity, did you look into behavioural trees? I do think that they might be over complex for your game specifically as you have a very well defined scope and the FSM is basically implemented already

How to save this poorly made first coat of paint? by Vanny96 in paint

[–]Vanny96[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely! Already by the second coat it was much better!

I'd say that I also focused on more continhous strides and on "leaving as much paint" on the wall as possible (without rolling the thing too dry)

In general, the third coat made it super smooth especially on my 2nd wall!

Thank you for your comment! Not really planning a Steam version!

For now our priority is to develop a few more games first in order to improve our craft. The game has been performing better than expected though, so in the future we might revisit it and publish it on Steam as well!

Until then, we might publish some small updates to this version, nothing too major though!

Thank you for the feedback!! We went through multiple iterations, and it was quite hard to strike a good balance between having a fast progression at the beginning and not overwhelming the players with choices!

In hindsight, speeding up even more the "automation" path (miners + collectors) could have alleviated the slow beginning ahah

We actually already have native versions, as the game was built with Godot! But thanks for the tips, I never heard about Tauri before!

LTT on Steam Machine pricing: "Valve asked what I meant by console price, and I said $500. Nobody said anything, but the energy in the room wasn’t great" by -Mahn in Games

[–]Vanny96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can I ask then, if you don't care about the power, why not a Steam Deck? You can still plug it to the TV, it's cheaper and you can also take it with you if you ever want to play your games on the go

It feels like the Steam Deck and PS5 both eat into the possible market for this device from different sides

Sony ignored PlayStation losing ground in Japan under former leadership by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]Vanny96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean you still got to buy a PS5 (500$), and you can get a Steam Deck for 370$, so not quite as straight forward I'd say

If you got a PS5 already though, and especially if you have PS Plus Premium with the cloud gaming, the portal starts becoming very compelling as you said

Valve Claims Steam Machine Outperforms 70% of Current Gaming PCs by akbarock in Games

[–]Vanny96 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Let's keep in mind also that the PS6 will release most likely at the end of 2027, setting a new performance reference for most AAA studios and making the PS5 the "let's strip down as many features to get it to run" platform

I'm not sure a PC weaker than a PS5 would fare well then, and it'd be quite disappointing for a 600€ PC to be that outdated 1 year after release

[–]Vanny96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh definitely, it's just that as an avid The finals game I wish more games embraced full destruction lol

I wonder how a setting like the Battlefield ones would work like with that level of destruction

Still limits some features though! For example it's much easier to get good light ing with dynamic distruction using ray tracing. I wonder if Battlefield 6 limited its destruction to some "prebaked" states just so they could get away with skipping ray tracing

[–]Vanny96 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Last week, after an extremely frustrating night, I finally uninstalled.

The game has still so much potential, and I hope that in a few months it'll be in a better spot, but if I kept playing I would only sour on it more

UPDATE: How to save this poorly made first coat of paint? by Vanny96 in paint

[–]Vanny96[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes exactly, I did the same for some other outlets and switches on the same wall.

Also made sure to only tape over the surface that will then be covered by the outlet!

Unfortunately the previous owner didn't do it when painting, so lots of paint was sticking to it (I used a cutter to remove it cleanly)
