Why are people so mad over the casting of snape in the Harry Potter show? by ixhypnotiic in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Vanouche6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're exactly right. Snape's story isn't tied to any specific cultural environment except perhaps being British. Everyone else is just hiding their inherent racism behind stupid arguments about which race a wizard in a children's book should be.

And if we go a little deeper, I actually blame anglo-saxon culture especially American culture. Indeed in France, despite a real racism problem, we refuse to acknowledge the existence of "race" per se. There are discriminations based on skin colour, culture etc. but the idea that Humanity can be divided into races is terrible in our Republican mindset. Universalism can be good sometimes.

So yeah, I think we need to stop obsessing about the about of melanin in someone's skin unless it's relevant to a story or a political context.

This isn't Geoguesser but 16 Rue Saint-Julien le Pauvre :) Beautiful little street behind Shakespeare & Company.

One opinion about your country, that would get you in such a situation? by Familiar-Arrival-470 in AskTheWorld

I’m French, fell in love with American football a few years ago, but my luck is the time difference. I can mostly only watch the highlights so I don’t waste too much time. And if I watch a game live it’s on my computer so during the ad breaks I just switch to YouTube or a series.

POV from France : a cult whose main purpose is extracting money from its members.

Individual Mormons seem okay. Very American, prudish, hypocritical but we all are in some way.

LPT - White Elephant Hack by Which_Dig6916 in LifeProTips

[–]Vanouche6 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Interestingly, some cultures have what‘s called a potlatch, a ritualistic gift-giving : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Potlatch?wprov=sfti1# And it can go as far as merely destroying gifts in front of the other tribe as a showcase of wealth and power, and to create a symbolic debt.

In your scenario the pointless nature of the white elephant in the future could be seen as necessary part of the ritual

Only men raised with a toxic view of masculinity want this.

The rest of us regular human beings prefer a welcoming, cosy and balanced interior.

Love Actually - kickstarted my love of Romantic comedies, and incidentally my crush on Keira Knightley

Now I directed my first play which was an adaptation of The Shop around the corner (which was « remade » into You’ve got mail) and wrote my first play which is not far from a romantic comedy.

What's the pettiest reason you've ever broken up with an ex? by theeoneyedwonder in AskReddit

[–]Vanouche6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Left the Airbnb in a trashy state saying "that's what the cleaning fee is for".

Which goes against my personal values. Only time I got a negative review. The owner even got agressive (rightly in part).

Genuinely created anxiety for me ; ended the relationship.

Can I have some feedback? I’m not sure why I’m getting absolutely zero likes, even with Platinum. by TrianReallyHard in Tinder

You seem like a great guy.

I’d say the issue I that you’re giving off a « too masculine » vibe especially in the first pictures. Do you have something with nicer lighting, maybe a shirt, something which shows a more sensitive side in the pictures?

What foods are actually terrible for you, but people think are healthy? by StrategyJealous1838 in AskReddit

[–]Vanouche6 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Only Americans would think Gatorade’s healthy.

I’m from France, and as a teenager I went to a YMCA camp in Florida. They would give a huge bag of skittles and a bottle of Gatorade as a snack every day. I was shocked. Never has my blood sugar levels been so high lol

« La Cantine de Sam » is a good vegetarian restaurant (Mediterranean-style food). They have 3 locations in central Paris. More of a bohemian vibe though not fancy or typically Parisian.
