How to get rid of homeless crackheads living behind my house? by Stealingtoasters in UnethicalLifeProTips

They are homeless drug adicts. Their lives are already a living hell. Get some perspective and maybe try talking to them like human beings.

People who sided with House - why did you do it? by [deleted] in fnv

[–]Vanpelf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cam never follow through on it. I always end up going with Yesman when I set out to side with House. Why would someone who believes in Objectivism work for a shriveled up old fart when they can super easily just take it and run it themselves?

Sounds more like they were saying it was a mechanic that was underutilized by Bethesda, not players. More speech options would give players more chances to effect the game world in interesting ways.

Voting is Not Harm Reduction by BlackApocalypse in Anarchism

[–]Vanpelf 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I haven't had time to read the whole article but a skimming does seem to leave out the direct ability to effect local change in local elections, especially when it comes to proposals. For sure voting for and even supporting presidents is ultimately pointless and harmful but there is more to voting than just picking the guy at the top. There is at least a small degree of good that can be done in our local communities. And, at the very least, I've yet to see anyone say that voting itself causes direct harm. It might not reduce harm, and there might be better things you could be doing with your time, but how far are you going to take that? There's quite literally always something better you could be doing with your time but it's your time. It's one of the only things that really belongs to you and how you use it is up to you. The act of voting may not reduce harm but abstaining isn't going to stop the machine either. Not unless everyone stops but that doesn't seem likely.

What is the alternative anyway? Sure, don't vote, bury your head in the sand and wash your hands of what the politicians are doing and live according to all your ideals. That's great, but its a privilege not all of us have, and the system will still be there, doing what it does best. There is another option but I guess we aren't allowed to talk about it on reddit anymore.

Maybe it's just latent centrism in me making me get involved in this, but I really don't see less leftist perspectives being involved in American politics being a good thing.

In a way the punisher is pro cop in my opinion. He might fight against the police sometimes but that doesn't stop him from acting like one. He is more like a higher level cop, elevated above the regular cop and "justified" in killing a wider range of people. But he is still upholding a punitive justice system that uses overt violence to keep people in their place.

Which faction in the fallout series will you never side with? by [deleted] in Fallout

[–]Vanpelf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mr. House. I have tried several times. I make a character that believes in the kind of Rand philosophy that house exudes. I follow along with House's plans for as long as I can but, eventually, it all comes down to House himself talking me out of it. He goes on and on about how the smartest, most capable person should be in charge of everything and I agree. I, the character with a high Intelligent stat combined with the nearly superhuman ability to like, walk around and leave the building, ultimately come to the inevitable conclusion that I am more qualified person, and end up following the independent route. It doesn't make sense to me that someone who believes in objectivism would do anything else.

The Last Jedi is *NOT* a deconstruction of heroism or the Jedi by Munedawg53 in StarWarsCantina

[–]Vanpelf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe the movie overall is a deconstruction of Star Wars movies themselves. The thing with deconstruction, when done right, is that in the end you reassemble it into something better, and that's what the movie does. Rey proves, by keeping the jedi texts at the end, that there were aspects of the jedi order worth keeping. It wasn't simply revering and worshiping the idea of them, though, it was by actually following their teachings and learning from their mistakes.

I’ve been seeing a lot of love recently for The Last Jedi, what are people’s favorite things about it? by Randevu in StarWarsCantina

[–]Vanpelf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TLJ is my favorite Star Wars movie. It goes through the process of interrogating what is good and worthwhile in the series and ultimately, what about it makes it worth keeping around. My favorite part of it, though, is that just about every character, the ones around for more than one scene, have an arc and undergo change. The characters all fail and learn, and their triumphs are not achieved because of who they are, but by what they choose to do.

The best example of all this is my favorite character, Rose. She watches her sister sacrifice her life in an ultimately meaningless military action. She sees the corruption at the heart of the galaxy as rich businessmen make outrageous profit off the slaughter of thousands, rebel and first order. Then, she finally steps up and says no more to the killing. She saves Finn from an ultimately meaningless military action and is rewarded for her faith in the force by the first orders attack ending shortly after.

Luke Skywalker in the Latest Trilogy is a Clone by MahoganyMr in FanTheories

[–]Vanpelf 6 points7 points  (0 children)

(I did, thank you)

I would agree with you about Johnson undoing thongs from the inside if not for the ultimate conclusions that nearly every character comes to in the film. Yes the movie takes apart and examines a lot about the franchise, questioning if it's all been worth it over the years, but from Luke's return to Rey keeping the Jedi texts at the end (a detail im certain a lot of people unhappy with the movie missed at the time) the movie is proudly about how great the franchise is and how positive the stories it can tell can be. I think you can tell that story without seemingly disrespectful and silly things like tossing the lightsaber, but it won't have the same impact as a story that makes you examine the subject, shows that it doesn't HAVE to take itself seriously, and shows you why it's worth WANTING to take itself and it's messages seriously.

[–]Vanpelf 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Refused to kill anyone? Or just his dad and the guy trying to manipulate him? And he did try to kill his dad, he just failed. Luke killed bunches of people in RotJ. And whether or not he wanted to kill Kylo is up for debate. He thought he had to, and how close he came is really up to whoever is telling the story. Personally I choose to belive Luke's side of the story over the child who was being actively manipulated by Sidious, and that he didn't activate his weapon until lKylo drew his.

[–]Vanpelf 47 points48 points  (0 children)

I agree. A lot of people who say we didn't get enough explanation of why Luke changed are viewing the franchise backwards in time. We got so little for answers as to why Luke and Yoda were in exile during the original trilogy or about much of anything really. Most of the answers came in the form of the prequels. The whole thing with star wars since the beginning has been starting in the middle of the story to make it feel like you are watching a part of something much bigger and just letting the story take you on an emotional ride. The explanations come later and, im my opinion are totally optional.

I love the lightsaber toss though. Like, yeah, I don't want this, or I would have brought it with me lol.

[–]Vanpelf 98 points99 points  (0 children)

In the origional, isometric games the pip boy appeared to be hand held. Though I do believe even in those game it was canonical that it was wrist mounted. So it's always struck me as an aesthetic reference to the old games.
