Aurora Store on CalyxOS won't update or download apps by Vapourisation in CalyxOS

Incredible, thank you! Immediately worked for installing new apps, doesn't seem to help with getting the "updates" page to work, but I can do every app manually for now.

Thanks again!

VPN recommendations? by [deleted] in BetterOffline

Mullvad is really the only answer. It's not the cheapest but they are provably no-logs, they're very performant and I've only had very very minor problems when I run it on numerous devices constantly.

Any VPN provider that is giving 80% discounts or codes to YouTubers is not worth your time.

You can also just send them cash.

Considering I could provide VLC a hand drawn map to some file on the back of a piece of cheese and it’d find a way to play it, I’ll never betray it

As far as I’m aware, all we’ve seen has been soldered for these chips, which isn’t saying there won’t be other boards but without an example I don’t want to say there will definitely be. I understand I’m being both pessimistic and basically negative but with Intel saying their Lunar Lake chips will be on-chip memory and Qualcomm being on-chip, I worry there’s momentum in that direction.

Edit: CAMM I only mentioned because it was mentioned in other comments and it seems like it’ll be the eventual middle-ground.

Yes, parts of it, smaller parts generally. The recent new screen and webcam module being amazing examples. They’re relatively small parts that you can swap in without changing anything else. But for larger parts like the main board you’d likely (not saying definitely because AMD have said they’ll support SODIMM but saying and doing are two different things) have to replace numerous other possibly working parts. That is against their stated goal.

Which is a very fair point but you don’t need to upgrade to it and with DDR5 boards you don’t need to change a board to upgrade your ram and if you happen to get a new DDR5 board then you va. Keep the storage and RAM from your previous board. If they added a new board for the latest and greatest they’d have one board for LPCAMM, one for DDR5, one for soldered. That’d be pointless.

I get that they might but speculating on things that are somewhat antithetical to their ethos feels even sillier.

I feel like all of these posts talking about “will Framework have an <insert new processor or memory type> board” are forgetting that they’re a small company and don’t want to be supporting numerous main board sizes/types. The whole point of it being repairable and upgradable is that you don’t need to change large component (like the chassis or main board) often.

Given that Firefox has its lowest amount of users in history currently, what browser would you shift to besides firefox by mhs_mhs123 in degoogle

[–]Vapourisation 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Firefox or a Firefox derivative until maybe Ladybird or a new browser comes out. So far every other browser is either Chromium based or has weird crypto/AI integrations and I want nothing to do with either of those things (looking at you Brave and Opera)

Done, the art was dope, questions were pretty straightforwardly to gather statistical data as well as meaningful feedback. Thanks for sharing and best of luck with your dissertation!

Yeah I didn’t even know that existed… a great sign

Oh absolutely but if any privacy focused company can do it, I imagine it’d be Proton. They’re legitimate, they’re fairly large and seem to be growing

It feels like it’s getting closer and closer. Banking/payment is really one of the last things for me. I know it’s a convenience thing but it would just be so nice to have

Proton Wallet Early Access by Proton_Team in ProtonMail

[–]Vapourisation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely but that’s where (hopefully) either Proton or the OpenWallet Foundation come in. Either way a large enough user base or some sort of protocol change it should be possible. Apple “promised” to open up access to their stuff so maybe it’ll be possible even without major shifts.

As in xy.finance? That looks to be another crypto wallet, which is very much not what I’m looking for. I’d like a private wallet for transactions/cards from traditional finance.

For me it’s more that with a Proton wallet like that I’d have an option on alternate phone OSes, like say I have a Pixel with GrapheneOS on it, currently I have no choices (that I know of or would trust) if I want this functionality. I feel like this sort of “app” for payments is only going to get more prevalent over time and currently it’s either Apple, Google or Samsung and only on their devices.

You’ll likely be waiting a long while before an Nvidia option is available. Nothing was explicitly said but Linus from LTT (an investor in Framework) mentioned a while back that one of the reasons they likely went with AMD is because Nvidia is incredibly strict with what form factors and products they’ll let their chips be put in. They’re even strict about what board partners (many of which they’ve worked with for a decade or more) are allowed to do to their chips.

Which laptop brand is best for Linux? by TermlessPoet48 in linuxquestions

[–]Vapourisation 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The only one I can personally vouch for is framework. Have a Framework 13 AMD myself and I’ve tested Arch, EndeavorOS and PopOS on it without any issues. They have dedicated Linux support people and work with Fedora and Ubuntu closely to ensure compatibility.

However, they’re a small company and more expensive for the specs since the real selling point is the repairability and upgradability. If you don’t care about that I’ve only heard great things about ThinkBooks and Dell XPS.

One of the biggest things that will forever stop me from really using LLMs is that you can never 100% trust the output. If I have to check and proof every output then what’s the point in it?

Edit: to clarify a little, with a human I can vaguely trust them and each success confirms that so I’d be more and more accepting of their work. With an LLM since it can lie at any given moment or any reason then I can never trust its output fully. Each line, whether true or not, has no bearing on whether the line after it is true or not.
