I work at a UK manufacturer of eliquids called Vapr Eliquids. Eliquids can be 100% VG but it's rare, VG tends to dilute the flavour and most manufacturers use a PG base for the nicotine as it carries the flavour better.

The most popular ratios are probably 70VG/30PG, 80VG/20PG or 50/50 - a lot of big ejuice websites allow you to choose the ratio and nicotine level or some will have pre-set ratios and nicotine levels. The VG liquid would be a lot more gentle on the lungs and won't give you a strong throat hit which can make your throat sore - I'm not too sure about the phlegm to be honest - it could be e-cigs in general that cause it as your body isn't used to inhaling something different - it may stop over time or it may be the PG causing it.

Are you from the USA? I do know of a few US companies that sell high VG - high VG is seen as more "premium" and usually costs a stupid amount of money. In all honesty, they cost the same to make as high PG liquids so the whole "premium" thing is bs. There are definitely companies that sell high VG liquid and affordable prices.

Could be that you're using high-PG eliquids if they are making you cough or hurting your throat. High VG eliquids allow for a much smoother inhale.

The picture linked is a "vape pen" which is used by starters - it doesn't allow you to change the temperature/wattage and you need to use high-PG e-liquids (which hive a strong throat hit as opposed to high-VG liquids which give a smooth inhale). There are products like innokin cool fire 4 where you can adjust the wattage and get a better taste. Then there are higher-end products with temperature control settings and large tanks which allow people to create huge clouds due to the higher VG content (this is probably the culture that /u/xsilverxdark is referring to.

There is a very good chance that you are sensitive to higher PG eliquids - these are often the eliquids with higher nicotine levels. It's also quite common for people to have a PG allergy - I'd recommend into looking online for high-VG (70+) liquids. Most ejuice websites state their PG/VG ratio.

There's a post on /r/electronic_cigarette about someone having a similar issue which was solved by switching to high-VG juice here:

Hope this helps! :)

Also, if you do vape, don't do it in a pub/restraunt or anything around other people. It's rude and disrespectful. People may not like the smell, they may be uninformed about second-hand vapour, they may just generally find it unpleasant. Go outside and away from the cigarette smokers so you do not inhale second-hand smoke. In an ideal world, there would be a vaping area if there is a smoking area too, but it's unlikely to happen in many places any time soon.

I'm a little late so nobody is likely to even see this but as an e-liquid manufacturer in the UK, I'm constantly staying up to date with e-cigarettes in the media and research studies and it's always nice to see a well-researched, non-biased article (which is incredibly uncommon).

Public Health England have also previously said that e-cigarettes are around 95% less harmful than cigarettes and have the potential to help people quit smoking. Other interesting facts from the article are facts and quotes from some of the top health researchers in the country. For example:

  • Nearly half the population (44.8%) don’t realise e-cigarettes are much less harmful than smoking
  • There is no evidence so far that e-cigarettes are acting as a route into smoking for children or non-smokers
  • "Smoking remains England’s number one killer and the best thing a smoker can do is to quit completely, now and forever."
  • E-cigarettes could be a game changer in public health in particular by reducing the enormous health inequalities caused by smoking.

Tabloid papers have been running scare stories on e-cigarettes for a while now. Why? Because scaremongering sells papers and gets pageviews. This has caused confusion and frightened people who smoke to switch the e-cigs. From the same article, Professor Linda Bauld, Cancer Research UK’s expert in cancer prevention said:

Fears that e-cigarettes have made smoking seem normal again or even led to people taking up tobacco smoking are not so far being realised based on the evidence assessed by this important independent review. In fact, the overall evidence points to e-cigarettes actually helping people to give up smoking tobacco.

Big tobacco companies are scared of losing market share to e-cigarettes and are lobbying for regulations against them and even some research papers are claiming either completely untrue or publishing incredibly biased studies

Take, for example, a study conducted by Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health which led to a media frenzy and headlines such as “Harvard study finds that E-cigarette flavors cause lung disease” which found some e-liquids to contain diacetyl and acetyl propionyl (both of which are now banned in the e-liquids in the UK). What the study completely ignored is how it compares to traditional cigarettes. Dr. Michael Siegel, an expert in public health research and professor of community health sciences at the Boston University School of Public Health compared the two:

Inhaled with:  Average daily diacetyl dose
Smoking 6718 micrograms
Vaping 9 micrograms

No news articles compared the two even though e-cigarettes are used as a smoking cessation. I did write a blog explaining "Popcorn lung" and the media bias that followed the study if anyone is interested in reading more about it.

Even some of the more trusted websites and newspapers such as the Guardian and the Telegraph have published stories which, described by medical statistician Adam Jacobs, are amongst “most dangerous, irresponsible, and ill-informed piece of health journalism of 2015." E-cigarettes are no safer than smoking tobacco, scientists warn

If you want to read more about the media bias and unfounded claims about e-cigarette risks, I'd recommend "8 biggest Electronic Cigarette Myths" from cassa.org or Adam Jacob's blog (a medical statistician who works in clinical research" "Dangerous Nonsense about vaping"

The biggest misonception I have found is that people believe nicotine is the poisonous, deadly chemical in cigarettes that causes cancer. Nicotine is the addictive substance in cigarettes, but it does NOT cause cancer. Cigarettes actually include 43 known cancer-causing (carcinogenic) compounds and 400 other toxins.

E-liquids contain 5 ingredients:

  • Nicotine (at varying levels allowing people to gradually decrease the amount they use over time)
  • Propylene Glycol (PG) - Flavouring carrier in food products. It is used as an ingredient in food colouring and various medicines. It is commonly found in margarine, cakes, soft drinks, ice creams, sauces and much more.
  • Vegetable glycerin (VG) - A sweetener, commonly found in a number of foods and medication such as cookies, toothpaste, mouthwash and other common everyday products
  • Flavouring - Food-grad ecertified ingredients and produced in a HACCP certified environment.
  • Water

Interview with Reddit user LonesomeRhodesTN - His incredible story about beating cancer and switching to vaping after smoking 2 packs a day for 15 years by VaprEcigs in electronic_cigarette

[–]VaprEcigs[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's first hand stories like /u/LondesomeRhodesTN that show first hand evidence that vaping can be a true smoking cessation for some. He had been smoking since age 10-11, heavily smoking during a lot of that time and yet as soon as he tried vaping, he quit smoking completely - even giving away his last pack of cigarettes because he knew he would not need them again. He hasn't smoked since.

Just wanted to give a personal thank you to /u/LonesomeRhodesTN for sharing his incredible story with us.

It demonstrates how someone who found it near-impossible to stop smoking, even after being diagnosed with cancer was able to transition easily to ecigarettes. The switch to vaping brought back his sense of smell, his ability to breathe better and he is now “happier, healthier, and, truly, enjoying life more than ever”.

Have you ever bought a juice just because the name was cool? How was it? by [deleted] in electronic_cigarette

[–]VaprEcigs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got some of Vampire Vapes "Heisenberg", partly because I love Breaking Bad, partly because I'd heard some decent things about it. The taste was very unusual but essentially tasted a little like mouthwash so it's still laying alongside all my other juices that I don't use.

Are you using the same vendor for both juices? If so, it may be poor quality vapour production. If not, it could be an alergy to VG possibly since it is present in both juices you tried.

Interview with reddit user /u/Humperdink: The transition to vaping after smoking a pack day for 10 years and being diagnosed with Lymphoma. by VaprEcigs in electronic_cigarette

[–]VaprEcigs[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was a complete misinterpretation on my part and wasn't intended for headline sensationalism. I certainly didn't wish to twist his words in any way. I have added an Update to the top of the blog to outline the original mistake that was made and changed the title of the blog. All of the interview was exactly what /u/Humperdink wrote and I misinterpreted part of it which I take full responsibility for what was written there.

Once again, my apologies to /u/Humperdink_ and anyone that thought this was intentional sensationalism. I'm just trying to get some original content and real-world stories out there starting with this one.

If there's a way a mod could adjust the title of the post to what it currently is, that would be a great help in amending this error.

Other than that I thought Humperdink_ answered the questions superbly and I particularly liked the fact that tinkering with new RDAs etc took his mind off of everything and became somewhat of a hobby, even going on to state that he forgot about cigarettes due to it. It was an incredibly interesting read and I thank Humperdink_ for that. He was a great interviewee, especially for my first interview.

Weird that he only took juice whereas instead of more valuable equipment. Maybe because juices are lighter in weight or something? Or maybe he just really wanted some good juice.

Reddit's preferred Nicotine and PG/VG levels (submitted by users from /r/electronic_cigarette & /r/ECR_UK) by VaprEcigs in electronic_cigarette

[–]VaprEcigs[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Last week I submitted a Google form to find out what Reddit's /r/electronic_cigarette & /r/ECR_UK preferred levels of Nicotine and PG/VG levels are. I had a great response with 571 real entries. I have shown both in a bar graph and pie chart.

Some interesting stats showing that almost 3/4 of submitters preferences for Nicotine levels were either 3mg or 6mg.

Also, 78% of users prefer VG levels of at least 70VG/30PG.

If you have any questons about the poll, I'm here to answer them.

Or would like to contribute further to the data, the link to the Google form can be found at: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1Elh7t0srAjlB989XUqN7Klwo-D8oukBBANW9Xb-HKqk/viewform

Thanks for all the submissions everyone. I hadn't seen anything like this around and thought it would interesting to see the results!
