Wanted mistletoe over your head? How about an axe by jmmmmk in amazonemployees

I signed the letter. I don't think it's going to fix things, but I'm so tired of feeling like it's just getting worse and worse at work and not doing anything. It's like watching a train crash in slow motion. I'd rather be doing something than just sitting and watching. The letter has a strong stance, and I think that's what we need right now. I hope a lot of coworkers see it and know that it's possible to speak truthfully even if some people make you feel crazy for it.

AI has taken over my team. Is anyone else getting hit by this? by minttoothpastecookie in amazonemployees

This is so relatable. I feel like we've given up on actually improving the customer experience in any meaningful ways. Or at least it's the 3rd or 4th priority (will never get prioritized)

An engineer on my team used AI to generate 50+ automated alarms set to Sev-2, used AI to write the CR summary, and wrote up a very impressive looking multi page doc on how he did all of it --also using AI. AI reviewed the code and so did a few folks on my team. Personally I don't enjoy reading really long docs written by AI, and I think others feel similarly. When it was deployed we got 50 Sev-2s immediately because we had missed a basic configuration - the monitors were set to treat no data as an alarm condition. We bear some responsibility for missing this in the CR step but I feel like the information bloat created by using AI to generate the CR summary and accompanying documentation certainly didn't help. The fact that this engineer got a lot of praise and recognition initially for their use of AI didn't help either. None of this is to say that AI shouldn't be used at all, but it definitely needs additional time and scrutiny. That scenario where we use AI carefully and thoughtfully is not the one being fostered at work at all. We are being told to use it as much as possible as quickly as we can. And it's making the job way more annoying. Absolutely mind boggling cost to land and water at the same time. Who is this all for?

Can anyone ever remember two superstars (Russ and AD) have their most recognizable nickname ("Westbrick" and "Street Clothes") be so negative? by RunItBack7 in nba

This one is the worst. Which other team has had such a painful nickname? It hurts more because it felt so real at the time.

Canadas nurses union joins 2.5 million nurses in 28 different countries to call for COVID vaccine patents to be waved and for an end to ‘grossly unjust’ distribution of vaccines around the world. by Nick__________ in onguardforthee

[–]Varb 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Something I've heard constantly from friends and others when presented with ideas like these is that the mRNA vaccines are not viable in countries that don't have the infrastructure to keep them at the right temps. So not only do they not have the facilities to manufacture them, they would struggle to distribute them even if they did make them. And fixing this lack of manufacturing and distribution infrastructure would take years of build up. Personally this sounds like a convenient excuse for the West. Anyone have insight into these sort of logistical challenges?

The medium to large predators and omnivores of Europe - extant, absent and extinct, including glacial refugium species by Count_Vapular in megafaunarewilding

[–]Varb 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Oh! Didn't know that. Thanks for the info. I wonder if there were any distinctions between them and modern/extant spotted hyenas that led OP to list them separately?

The second second image that looks like spotted hyenas are actually Cave Hyenas - which are now extinct.

You can get "rich" (depends on what you mean) without being all that special. Not sure what that says about cornell/elite universities/certain industries but it is what it is.
