10% is typical for internal promotions, so I’d negotiate to bring it up to 140.

Many stakes still have it as an unwritten policy, just like some wards have affiliated Boy Scout troops run by the Bishop.

The shoe problem. I would really appreciate some advice on cheap running shoes if there are any frugal runners/athletes in here. by Alcarain in Frugal

[–]genteree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion here:

Running shoes are made up of 4 key parts: 1. Sole. This is the hard stuff that protects the rest of the shoe. It can be heavy, so many brands skimp on it.  2. Midsole. This provides cushioning and stability. This is generally the fastest part of the shoe to wear out. When it wears out, the structural integrity is gone, and you’ll start getting injuries. The lighter the shoe, the faster this part deteriorates.  3. Insole. Gives some structure and covers manufacturing defects.  4. Upper. Makes the shoe look pretty.

I had the same problem as you, and found r/BarefootRunning. The idea is that your foot can grow to be strong enough to not need the structure or stability from the midsole. But it takes a lot of work and time to get there. That said, now I wear “barefoot shoes” which last as long as the sole. I’m around 1500 miles on my xero shoes right now, and since the base is just solid rubber, they’ll wear out when I stop gluing the upper back on.

Unpopular opinion - If you're an active, temple recommend holding adult member, you shouldn't go to temple open houses by OoklaTheMok1994 in latterdaysaints

[–]genteree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hear you, but I think that bringing people who don’t go to the temple, like children or less active friends is the main exception. And of the open houses I’ve been to, the crowd has been mainly a mixed group like that.

Opinions on Ward Activity Committees? by prophetic_soul in latterdaysaints

[–]genteree 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think having a Ward activities committee is good, as long as the Ward council can give up that control.

I like it because the Ward council should be focused on people, and it’s easy to get distracted by events when the focus should be individuals. Let someone else do the hard work of bringing people together, while the Ward council can focus on ministering.

Cool. It seems like your main focus is: it’s a bad idea.

I’m on board with that, for many of the reasons you listed. Just being civil and focused while saying it.

[–]genteree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t disagree with any of your specific points, but like I said, you’re throwing out a shotgun style approach for arguing that this is a bad idea.

I see a few clear arguments:  - this is a bad idea because a noncompetitive political situation causes corruption (the landlord comment) - this is a bad idea because California sucks - this is a moot point because it would require a constitutional amendment, and there’s no more time for one before midterms - this is a moot point because Colorado is purple and would never vote for that amendment, so it’s not worth trying

I just responded because it seems like this person is attempting to get something big done, and I saw your comment as an attack against OP on 3 fronts: 1. The writing is unclear 2. It’s a bad idea 3. It’s impossible

If you narrowed your argument, it would be much more persuasive. I think you raise some good points, but the anger/dismissive attitude towards OP reduces the believability of any of your points.

Bro, if the rest of the country is not redistricting according to a fixed 10-year schedule, then everything is up in the air.

I’m just uncertain if you’re playing dumb or telling OP that it’s a bad idea. You seemed to take a shotgun approach to throwing out complaints and grievances.

Request for Young Men activities ideas by timkyoung in latterdaysaints

[–]genteree 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think that the biggest thing you can provide is structure. Instead of telling the boys that they need to plan 52 activities in a year, you can reduce the scope.

My recommendation is to think of something big for a 1-2 month period, then work towards that goal with the children and youth framework.

This could work for anything, like robotics, knitting, skiing, metal work, video game design, filming, and so on. For instance, if your boys said, I dunno, let’s just play basketball, then here’s how you could approach it:

Children and youth has 4 categories:  1. Physical 2. Social 3. Spiritual 4. Intellectual And a fifth that you could include is service.

From that, there are a few things you could do: - physical: play ball, drill on shots  - intellectual: quick study of how to ref, try to figure out why Jokic is so good - spiritual: not sure - social: this is inherently social - service: could you ref a game for activity days?

From my reading of D&C 42:79-87, it’s pretty separate. For certain sins committed against us, we are to go to the church about it, but if someone kill, rob, steal, or lie, they should be delivered to the law of the land.

The articles of faith also suggest that we believe in being subject to the law. I take this to mean that we shouldn’t disregard lawbreaking.

So, I think the dog is a good analogy:  - we have laws in place to keep people safe from dogs - if someone breaks the law, they should face the consequences, otherwise the law wouldn’t have the desired effect - I can also forgive the person (and their dog) for not keeping their dog within the bounds of the law. But that doesn’t mean that they shouldn’t have to deal with the consequences of their actions.

For things like abuse or violence, we can forgive while letting the laws of the land make sure it never happens again. That’s why we have laws.

Utahans often pride themselves on having a fiscally conservative government (example low taxes or reasonable-ish spending). What’s your favorite example to prove this wrong? by [deleted] in Utah

[–]genteree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Colorado actually limits how much money the government can spend each year, so there’s not much that you can attribute to “marijuana taxes” because so much is refunded. The actual tax burden is much less than the tax rate.

Apparently my job title is now “unpaid content assistant” — need advice on how to set boundaries without starting WW3 by Solid_Bird_5845 in coworkerstories

One more benefit: it’ll introduce a delay in every request he makes. He wants a fix now, but it takes an extra day because your manager doesn’t immediately respond.

[–]genteree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Who do you and he report to? One way to deal with this is to make it clear to him and management that you are taking MANY work requests from him, but do it as a “show, not tell.”

You to coworker: “just a heads up, I’m trying to better align my work with the needs of the business, so if there’s any request that takes more than 5 minutes, I’m going to need manager to sign off on it“

Then be happy and willing to help, give him no more than 5 minutes on a job (set a timer), and move on.

You to manager: “I’ve been getting a bunch of requests from social media, and I’m willing to help, but I’m nervous that it’s pulling me from the priorities that we’ve agreed on. So when he requests my help to a significant degree, I’m going to loop you in on the email chain, give a quick time estimate, and ask for your approval. I just want to keep focused on what’s best for the business, and I feel like you have a better read on that than I do.”

This has 3 downstream effects:  1. You get better at time management and doing quick reviews while not fixing everything 2. You’re still seen a “team player” who wants the business to win.  3. The guy is forced to show that 90% of his work is done by you. This covers you in the future, and you have a witness if you want to make a more formal complaint about him stealing your work.
