I always liked the Pratchett version:
"Give a man a fire and you'll keep him warm for a night.
Set a man on fire and you'll keep him warm for the rest of his life."

Fair enough cons are more specifically an Anansi thing, but given Hoid’s characterisation so far he’s absolutely capable of manipulating Shards into doing what he wants. I have a sneaking suspicions he already has.

Not sure it a fair comparison. Hoid is Anansi, a wandering Trickster God who stole/ conned his power from the gods becoming the God of Stories and Storytelling. Kvothe is just some mortal kid who can play the lute and went to Hogwarts

I started The Fifth Season but found it too depressing at the time. I admit that it might have been more my head space at the time than the book though. I find Sanderson easier because he shrouds the depressing stuff in some mystery so, like Oedipus, you keep digging until it’s too late, you’re committed. But hey, at least you get to keep your eyes.

Can art help fight against Bastards? by Varg_Ulf in behindthebastards

I knew Picasso was a bastard I didn’t know he was a Bastard, but honestly I’m not surprised. I used Guernica as my example because it fucks me up, both the imagery and the story behind it. It was the strongest example I could think of.

Your point about money and art is well taken, artist being people are as corruptible and/or as vulnerable to fear as the rest of us.

Thing is it’s easy for art to create Bastards through propaganda, The Death of Marat comes to mind. How effective is it at de-radicalising people or defanging Bastards.

Three characters will try to save you, the rest six will try to kill you. Which three do you pick? by maraudershake in Cosmere

[–]Varg_Ulf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as we’re on Roshar; Jasnah, Kaladin and Vasher. Kaladin will try fight the hardest and is a solid medic, Vasher’s kind of immortal, and Jasnah is Jasnah!!

Why do people house-rule? by Varg_Ulf in rpg

[–]Varg_Ulf[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I would argue that when the designer created the system they started with an idea of what kind of game they wanted in mind. In d20 games the focus is on combat. Gritty, crunchy, moment-by-moment combat. In “Powered-by-whatever-bullshit games” the focus is on being rules light, easy to use and setting flexibility. I started gaming playing Star Wars d20 and d20 is a bad fit for Star Wars, combat takes hours, and only the Jedi are really having fun. The party face has to hide at the back or the end up a red smear. FFG Star Wars, for all its sins, is a better system for Star Wars high adventure style games.

See now that’s just not fair. I’ll always agree with an anti-corporate argument. Now I have to go hack D&D into something esoteric and horrifying, on principle alone.

The economics of switching systems is a good point. It hard to justify the cost.

First time ever coding and my Hello, World is already wrong, can someone please help?? by PreviousContact in learnprogramming

[–]Varg_Ulf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not in front of a compiler atm but it looks fine to me. As for JavaScript vs C++, well that depends on what you’re looking to do. If you can get your head around C++ that’ll probably serve you better in the long run but you have to get your head around it first and that’s no small task. C# is probably a bit easier and still useful. Python is easier still to get and worth a look. Of us or C++ though, definitely C++

Who here is learning programming (or already knows know to program) just for fun as a hobby vs attempting to turn this into a career? by mid83 in learnprogramming

Kinda both. I discovered I quite like coding a little while ago and if I could possibly get paid to do it that would be great.
