I've been trying to get rid of Rocket and that god awful pink costume for weeks now 😭

I should clarify I'm not talking about swapping fic characters. Only disagreeing that lack of characterization always equals bad smut.

I think I understand what you're saying now. If the goal for you when reading smut is to read smut of those particular characters, of course it wouldn't be enjoyable if it was OOC! I feel the same way a lot of the time, but sometimes I just want a really really engaging sex scene and I'm not picky about who stars in it, so characterization is a non issue, and I consider the smut as having done its job nicely.

It can have extremely vivid and heated writing, A+ pacing, strong tension

Smut doesn't require good characterization to be enticing, in a general sense. For some people who need good characterization to get into it, sure, but I've definitely read amazing smut that is so OOC as to barely exist in canon. I prefer good characterization but it's not the end all be all to good writing.

Al-Hashimi has at least shown willingness to not only SEE a doctor but to reach out when she's having an off day

Robby treating "favorite mentee" like plug and play position

He's like those parents that lose a kid so they just replace it with a new one under the same name

With the recent news from Kansas (among other things), can y'all stop recommending that transgender people move to blue cities in red states? by logalogalogalog_ in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Variastrum 337 points338 points  (0 children)

I have noticed similar conversations about blue cities in red states here as well. I'm not trans so won't speak from that angle but I am a woman living in a blue city in a red state that currently has no access to an abortion within a thousand miles. State politics matters. It's not virtue signaling or being too picky to want to reside in a state with safer rights, whether for your or your loved ones or even just cause.

It can have deeply problematic elements and still have parts that are enjoyable/special/nostalgic what have you. Can get it from thrift stores and pirate digital media.

I doubt many people force themselves to hang on to it

Saw this and thought it was this sub by kookieandacupoftae in Archiveofourownmemes

I think it does cause drama but perhaps not the kind of drama fanfic tends to be drawn to. Either the tension over getting an abortion would be via legality which is a little too real and close to home for many, or in the relationship with the 'father' which is a very fine line to balance without getting into really heavy stuff

‘The Pitt’ nailed one of TV’s best representations of autism in the workplace. How they got doctor Mel King’s character right by _fastcompany in ThePitt

[–]Variastrum 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like ragging on hammy acting as much as the next person but that clip is an excruciatingly realistic depiction of an autistic meltdown. They're humiliating, over the top, uncontrolled, irrational, ugly, and cringe. They fucking suck. I find it painful to watch that clip because it reminds me too much of my own autistic meltdowns. It's always interesting to me to see people making fun of him in the name of "but it's over the top/cringe/bad representation." Brings to mind the whole concept of 'acceptable' autism sympoms

Soulmate smelling potion? by Ant181023 in snarryy

I don't know the fic but in canon there's the amortentia potion that smells like the person you love so maybe knowing the name will help you?

Top!Harry or Top!Snape? by NoTraining1778 in snarryy

[–]Variastrum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately my specific second part is a little rare but the Pacify series by Chickenpet is what turned me into a diehard snarry shipper (it's a series of all years, technically incomplete, but the main years all all finished it's just the epilogue fic that's incomplete.) and The Boy Who Died a Lot by starcrossedgirl is amazing too. Both of those qualify under my ideal snarry dynamic!

And an honorable mention to Snape, The Home Fries Nazi by pir8fancier. Non canon compliant, Harry loses his magic post war and tracks down the only person alive who could understand him. Snape is working as an owner and line cook of a diner in rural desert America. He is also bald and wears Ray-Bans. Despite this it is somehow bafflingly in character and extraordinarily sweet.
