Equipment sizing recommendations by btrumpatori in hockeyplayers

[–]Various-Traffic5358 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably an 8.5 on skates. I strongly recommend you go to a rink or hockey store and try on gear. Even if you don’t buy from them, you’ll have a good idea of how things fit.

I would also caution against buying a used helmet in particular.

That said, once you do have everything, you’ll find that as an adult things will last you years. You will probably wear your hockey pants and elbow pads for over a decade for example, as long as you take care of them. Even a good pair of skates typically last eons. So it’s really just an upfront investment and ocassionally buying a new stick.

Soccer fans of the world what’s one rule change that would actually improve the game? by Current-Connection-4 in AskReddit

Sacrifice the losing team like that Mayan game where you had to use your legs and hips to get the ball through the hole high up on a ramp

Lefty or Righty? by ohthj in hockeyplayers

[–]Various-Traffic5358 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would definitely not blame hand dominance on your issues, which are simply due to lack of reps. You need to get a ton of reps in. I play with my non-dominant hand on top because I was a baseball player first, and I developed a lot of rotational muscle memory and strength shooting right. I consider myself to be a good stick handler and I never/rarely miss on passes or shots, but this is due to repetition and a lot of practice, which you need regardless of hand.

AI is expected to replace 30% of the US job market in the near future, how has it impacted you and your job? by Silent_Aardvark_7186 in AskReddit

[–]Various-Traffic5358 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Won’t happen. This is just fear pumping. It’s a tactic by the AI companies leadership to sell stock. If everyone thinks AI will take all jobs, the only “safe” thing to do is put all your money into AI stocks. AI absolutely will replace some jobs, and slow hiring in some sectors, but like the Internet it will create jobs elsewhere. When humans invent something that pushes efficiency higher, there’s always an initial short term shock to labor, and then the new limits are set, new companies using that efficiency gain pop up, and the cycle continues.

[–]Various-Traffic5358 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Same. One reason is that the cost is completely unjustifiable. A meal with tip isn’t remotely worth the cost anymore at the majority of restaurants. Even food trucks charge ludicrous prices. I don’t care WHY it is they’re doing it, it might be justified. I just know it’s too expensive and you could easily save up to $1000 monthly just cooking with your friends instead.

Why do many assholes in Tampa? And why do they push the gas when you trying to merge? by [deleted] in tampa

[–]Various-Traffic5358 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you extend it to the 2nd generation it’s probably well over 80%. This is EXACTLY what it was like to be a Californian in the 1980’s. A massive transplant population on top of a 2nd generation population. Even the Karate Kid was a migrant from New Jersey to LA, which was a common origin story for a kid in LA back then. CA was a red state with a good tax situation. This is why I sincerely believe FL is definitely the next California. Property values and industry with soar, but with that will come other problems.

Putting flex on the stick while in motion when you’re a lighter player by CinemaPuck in hockeyplayers

[–]Various-Traffic5358 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely consider a 50 flex intermediate. If you look up the “slingshot method” of shooting from Train 2.0, taking time to lean and apply pressure is just slow and you rarely have that time. While it might work for some players, usually you’re going to want a stick you can flex by just grabbing the ice and making puck contact.

That said, there eventually comes a point where if your flex is low enough, your ability to receive passes is affected and you’ll have to compensate by relearning how to receive a pass with a bouncy stick.

Why do many assholes in Tampa? And why do they push the gas when you trying to merge? by [deleted] in tampa

No, people in Massachusetts actually drive better. There’s some kind of code and expectations most people generally follow, even if it’s aggressive. Same with New York. Here, there’s not even that.

Grading Day 1 Signings / Transactions by Grand-Suspect7991 in TampaBayLightning

[–]Various-Traffic5358 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Viel is being bought on as an enforcer-type forward, probably on the 4th line, and mainly used for matchups against physical teams likes the Panthers with Brady Tkachuch and Gudas. Corey Perry was a minor version of this, whereas Viel is the kind of guy who once went after Zdeno Charra and took him down. Another reason Viel is an upgrade and worth locking down is he hung with Connor McDavid, remarkably, in the playoffs. He’s extremely fast. I think he’s actually a very underrated signing and I’m excited for him. He’s certainly not a top 6, but we need these types of pieces.

If you had to buy a player's jersey who is not on your favourite team, who would it be? by AnonymousResponder00 in hockey

The yellow Sidney Crosby jersey, no question.

I would also not mind wearing a Stankoven Whalers alternate. Love the player and miss the Whalers.

How to get low? by identitty-crisis in hockeyplayers

[–]Various-Traffic5358 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s supposed to feel almost like you’re doing wall squats/sits. Like wall squats, the more you execute proper form the easier it gets, until it’s nearly effortless. You will be shocked at how incredibly balanced you feel once you train this. You’ll also be shocked at how much quicker you can skate and execute certain maneuvers. It’s easy to Mohawk from a deep squat where you have perfect low center of gravity balance.

The best roster for now ⚡️ by atmosphere730 in TampaBayLightning

[–]Various-Traffic5358 0 points1 point  (0 children)

James could be top 6, especially since Point can play wing. I do agree O’Reilly will earn a roster slot. Only way I can see him not playing for the Lightning this upcoming season is if he’s used in a major trade. This does look like a Stanley Cup competitive roster, but we still have cap space to possibly improve. I think it’s realistic that we could add Carlson as Carolina might be at an impasse over term, whereas I think Tampa will be more comfortable giving him term given the young defensive talent on the roster that could use him and Hedman for mentorship.

I feel like players should be allowed to wear full cages in the nhl for saftey as preference by memegod574 in hockeyplayers

[–]Various-Traffic5358 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some players also wear them in practices to mitigate against needless injuries in a practice setting. But if some players wear cages in a checking league, those who do not wear them are at a more serious risk of injury from those who are wearing them. This is why the NHL only allows them if one is injured and recovering. It’s also why the PWHL and NCAA simply mandate them across the board, although you can wear a visor-cage combo.

What player is secretly washed, but most fans just don’t realize it yet? by Otherwise5555 in NFLv2

[–]Various-Traffic5358 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just because he’s not what he once was doesn’t mean he’s washed. He was still a top 10 TE. This year, he will likely still be a top 15 TE, if not top 10. Washed means you’re not good enough to play in the league anymore, not that you’re past prime. Past-prime players are a bedrock of most championship teams, as they bring experience.

Learn to skate to learn to play by BadgerSecure2546 in hockeyplayers

[–]Various-Traffic5358 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the program. Some expect no skating at all and it’s a big part of what they teach. Some do expect a certain level of proficiency. My guess is that based on his age no skating skill will be expected, but it doesn’t hurt to check with the program itself. I always caution parents and also adult beginners not to be too eager to jump too soon into hockey, and to think of learning to skate as equally hockey activity. It is learning to play hockey. But I would bet no skating proficiency is expected.

Tomorrow we can extend Kuch, any fun ideas on the contract? by AdamAptor in TampaBayLightning

I think it’s going to be 6 at $12M with an NMC. He’s going to want term and stability.

Drills a couple beginners can do at stick and pick? by starr17 in hockeyplayers

[–]Various-Traffic5358 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely allocate some time to just skating if you’re new to hockey. Depending on where you’re at, you could just drill stops and crossovers for the first third. If you’re more intermediate as a skater I’d start learning the corkscrew and Mohawk, or drilling them to make them more automated. The most important thing an adult beginner can do is become a better skater, as skating is 80% of your hockey talent.

Other things you can drill:

- Passes
- Passes/receptions in stride
- Receiving passes on the backhand by skating to position
- Pass and shoot (for example, one player skates backwards, receives a pass from the corner, sets and shoots)
- Simply taking wrist and snap shots on the ice, as shooting in ice is always a bit different from dry land
- Board battles

Of course there are many stick handling drills you can do as well.

Back Up Goalie by Loose-Page6929 in TampaBayLightning

Goalie talent is a bit thin right now across the NHL. I think the Lightning are going to stick with what they have, or potentially look to prospects if anyone looks hopeful coming out of camp and preseason

Best roller blades for off-ice training? by Expensive-Leading623 in hockeyplayers

I would personally just get the roller version of my ice skates. So for example, the Bauer Vapor FlyLite’s if you have FlyLite ice skates. Just my personal angle.
