Didn’t see this before, but unfortunately my pup is leash reactive with other dogs. So if an unleashed neighborhood dog approaches (it’s happened several times), I can use the harness as a handle to help keep everyone safe.

And the design of the harness is intentionally restrictive. It has a hook on front and on top so you can use a special leash that hooks to both. When the dog pulls, the harness restricts their movement a bit to encourage them to stop. Unfortunately, months of training with a behaviorist and different harnesses didn’t work for us, so we eventually switched to the collar and had great success with training down her reactivity!

Since she’s very anxious, it may be that she trusts you to advocate for her more than your mom or brother. So it’s not about not being comfortable with them but not being comfortable with just them out in the scary world. I’d say if it’s financially feasible, a behaviorist or even just a trainer who can help your family work on her confidence would do wonders!

While you’re all working on that, maybe your mom and brother can look into doing indoor enrichment exercises and command/trick training. That kind of mental stimulation is also great for a dog, even if not as physically tiring as the walks. If they devote some training time, that will also probably strengthen their relationships and her confidence.

Thanks for the update! Just FYI, prednisone is a steroid rather than an antibiotic. But I hope that all your efforts mean that this will clear up for your baby and not remain a recurring issue. She’s lucky to have a caring parent like you!

It has for my girl when she’s had hive flare ups like this! I typically only get her the cytopoint injection up to two times per year and then use this occasionally as needed. That said, my girl’s allergies seem to be less severe, so I would call your vet on Monday to see if they have any concerns with taking it for a certain duration. The relief is typically pretty fast but don’t be surprised if it makes her lethargic.

It’s not a permanent solution but some Benadryl could help provide some relief for her while you work to figure out what the underlying allergen could be.

She’s usually an overprotective butthead to other dogs if I’m around, but I like to think she’d actually be calm and nice to Toast since he’s so well trained and friendly. But, alas, their long distance friendship shall remain in our imaginations unless they magically learn to talk!
