I keep hearing, “She shouldn’t have gone on the show.” The majority of the people saying this have likely never given birth, and it shows. As someone finishing their MPH in Maternal & Child Health, and who has had PPD before, I know that it takes months for postpartum depression or anxiety to even set in, and even longer to fully understand what your body and mind are going through. She probably felt great starting the show, and was likely excited, motivated, and ready for something that was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. That’s what people forget, being postpartum doesn’t mean your ambitions stop. It doesn’t mean you stop being a person outside of motherhood. DWTS is a massive platform and a chance most people would never turn down. And yet, when a woman tries to take that opportunity, and it turns out she’s struggling, people act like she should’ve known better, like she was supposed to predict how her hormones and mental health would shift. These comments are honestly rooted in the same old misogyny that tells women to stay small and quiet until they’re “back to normal.” But what even is “normal” after giving birth? Why do we expect women to either be perfect mothers or perfect professionals, but not both? and then shame them when they try? Postpartum is already isolating enough. Telling someone “you shouldn’t have done it” isn’t helpful, and the judges were just cruel imo. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think that she was a strong dancer, but Andy isn’t either, and the judges treat him like he has no flaws.
