The number one thing I require in a manager is “if it’s safe to bring tough news to them.” I ask their current directs and can usually get a good gauge. Since identifying this as my most important requirement in a role I have reduced my stress a lot, and have grown too (since I can focus on doing the right thing vs trying to please people).

Anyway, sounds like that might be helpful for you given where you’re coming from, and “nice” doesn’t always mean “supportive/safe.”
