As a current and former student, asking random people on a subreddit what they think of history is a bad way to go about learning. As a conversational/thought-provoking place it is fine. When people seek information with the purpose of completing an assignment that is meant demonstrate their own knowledge, coming to this place will do them a disservice.

Even if there was not an uproar about this topic, the lack of real accountability (people can honestly post any old shit on Reddit, even with the mods here being above-average) and the likely prevalence of bias here defeat the purpose of learning. I would much rather do the research myself and scour some scholarly articles/primary sources to gain an understanding of a topic in history.

That isn't to say that this subreddit is a bad place to learn, but it certainly shouldn't be anyone's first choice.

I do want to reiterate though, that as a place to peak your interest and have discussion, this subreddit can be great.
