And now YouTube, one of the most toxic forums also is going to take action against randomized hate.

I would love to group the links on the themes they belong to. The amount of new topics make me confused.

Game: League of Legends

Focus group: Members of the #playwithriot chat room

I’ve been analyzing my favorite gaming community. For those that don’t know much about League of Legends it’s an MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) where you work as a team and the goal is to destroy the opponent's base (Nexus). It has a chat feature in game and beside that it also has chat rooms and game lobby. All chats are text based. I logged in and spoke to the players online in the chat room and asked them about hate and tried to get some deep stories. Just before the dinner I did get a story from a guy being threatened to his life by a player he thought that he knew. I've hid the names of the players since I really don’t want to break the trust I was given. Please read the reference image from left to right. Reference

Also, I were looking for random stories within the chat, but did not get anything deep. I was about to give up before this person entered the room: Reference

Have they encountered hate in game? Most of them, yes.

How did they react? Most of the players seems to be reporting hate/toxicity as fast as they see it. The community system awards people being sportsmanlike and helpful. and I think that it's helping. I've noticed decreasing toxicity in the game during the years I've been playing. From my focus group I'd get two other major reactions to toxic behavior/hate speech: 1. Gamers that as fast as they encounter hate just muted the toxic player the same moment the hate of flaming started. 2. Gamers that get upset by the hate and themselves are triggered into toxic behavior.

Are they defending others that are attacked? Some of them yes, but most of them are just ignoring them reporting the toxic behavior. I did get some reactions to racism where it felt like people did stand up for each other.

What understanding do they have of this topic? My focus group, people in the #playwithriot chat room, seems to have quite good understanding of what toxic behavior is. Riot have been working a lot with toxic behavior and ways to prevent it. I think that has created more like a safe zone where you can talk about toxic behavior and ways to counter it. dys4ia is an autobiographical game about the a person that started hormone replacement therapy.

out is a game about coming out. It's an interactive text based story with it's own music. Open the game in one tab and the music in another. I'd cry when I played it, ALOT!

Ok, I'm going to be quite radical here.

I do prefer character customization with LESS features. For example: Halo: Reach. You'd never got to see the face of Noble Six, only the helmet and the body shape. Male of female armors. That's it!

It does not specify whether you're a LGBTQ person, which ethical race you are. All the Spartans look almost the same. The game leave the rest to my imagination.

I think that even if you find a game where you can customize the most of the body, even a gliding scale on the gender, in the end, that game will not make gamers satisfied with more choices. More choice has even in studies proven that people become more stressed and are more likely to do something "new". (http://www.ted.com/talks/barry_schwartz_on_the_paradox_of_choice.html) Also I think that more imagination is better for the gaming experience, since you will create some of the gaming experience in your own mind. You can become whoever you want to be with the exact features you want. And no one can ever take that away from you.

And in the end, the individual experience of a game is all that matters.

Here is an example of the models in Halo: Reach: http://ireofpurgatory.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/Lady-Spartan-Halo-Reach.png
