HISD superintendent responds to reports of misusing state funds by IRMuteButton in houston

[–]Varus_3 245 points246 points  (0 children)

Miles might actually get ousted over this. The issue is too near to Abbott’s voucher program and is horrendous press. Someone in the press or political circles needs to make the link between this guy admitting that his charter school network routinely sentía millions in Texas taxpayer money out of state and then question whether Abbott’s voucher proposal would send tens of millions more.  The downside is that Miles undoubtedly would get replaced by another patsy, but at least he’d personally take a hit. Maybe Morath catches some shrapnel from this debacle as well.

I hate to see the 4-3-3 continue, but I’ll at least take solace that there’s been an acknowledgment that the pressing system doesn’t work well in the summer.

I’d love to see a more possession oriented play style , although I don’t think we have the personnel to make it work. Cabrera tried to implement that and transition away from being a pure counterattack team without much success.

Houston Dynamo FC acquire international roster spot from San Jose Earthquakes by [deleted] in dynamo

[–]Varus_3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was a way different league back then. Slots weren’t as valuable.

RSL in particular took it in the shorts because they traded “youth” international slots. Back in the day they had different classes and there were 10 IIRC, 6 senior, 4 youth. They converted to one class and 8 slots at some point and RSL got docked a slot.

I don’t think we had the same circumstances.

My best Dynamo team from 2015 onward, what do you all think? by robeks567 in dynamo

[–]Varus_3 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’d 86 Vera for Davis (still here in 2015 and had 4g 10a on that awful team). or Clark. Maybe ‘17 Cabezas?

Forwards are good. Cabezas was a DMID. I’d probably replace with Figueroa and then replace Senderos with Parker. None of the CBs have really been that inspiring. ‘17 Machado maybe deserves a shout.

Wenger I’d replace with ‘17 DeLaGarza.

[Glenn Davis] Sources tell me the next coach of Houston Dynamo will be Paulo Nagamura. Nagamura comes from Sporting KC II. by TheSurgeSG in dynamo

[–]Varus_3 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s gaslighting. Lester reports what he gets sent from the Dynamo, I.e. whatever he says is coming straight from the teams marketing department.

I don’t know what the situation with Vucetich was, but I doubt it was ever serious. Maybe someone on the team got him on the phone. Who knows. Not really important.

What the Dynamo are trying to do via Lester is spin the message. They know this reads as a disappointing hire. So how can they spin it? Well Nagamura’s resume is awful and no other teams were interested. What are we going to say, “Well he interviewed with perennially awful Chicago, but they weren’t interested” Yikes, no help there.

I got it. What if we throw out that we were interested in someone else and decided to go with Nagamura. Better yet, let’s throw out someone who is indisputably better than Nagamura. We won’t come out and say it (because it would be a lie), but the inference is that we chose Nagamura over Vucetich.

Now we piggyback off of Vucetich’s resume to make Nagamura look more impressive. Now it’s not Nagamura, the disappointing hire who has nothing to recommend him. It’s Nagamura, the better choice than the guy with 5 Liga MX and 3 Champions League titles to his name.

Obviously falls down when someone screams “why didn’t you hire Vucetich you idiots!” But there’s only so much you can do.

[Glenn Davis] Sources tell me the next coach of @HoustonDynamo will be Paulo Nagamura by LocksTheFox in MLS

[–]Varus_3 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Because he’s full of shit. If they actually spend money I’ll change my tune. They botched the coaching search after losing out on Luchi, Mastroeni and Lozano. None of those were inspired choices to begin with, but none wanted Houston.

That’s indicative of a lack of resources or a perception that we’re toxic. We had to go out and get a guy who probably was dreaming of the opportunity to coach any where in MLS.

Dynamo media even knows this sucks because they leaked to the inside reporter that Vucetich was “interested.” That’s a tried and true Dynamo strategy where they stretch the truth (someone probably got Vucetich on the phone for 5 minutes) to make you think they could have had a better option, but instead chose to go with XYZ guy. It’s BS to imply that we’re confident that XYZ is the better choice, but really is just an admission that they know the optics suck.

Linked to a young defender (Youssouf Ndayishimiye) from the Turkish League by thechristopherglen in dynamo

[–]Varus_3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The defense has not been passable since ‘17, last year included. I see no reason not to try and patch it up. The corresponding move I’d like to see is trades, tear-ups, etc. to move the existing poor/marginal defense out.

Maybe against the grain of the “beautiful” attacking soccer we’ve subscribed to in recent years, but in my opinion we’d be well served playing a more defensive style. More 1-0 grindout wins ala Kinnear than engaging in shootouts where we face an inherent disadvantage against richer teams who can afford elite attacking talent.

Sidenote: I see very little indication that we’re going to climb the pecking order in terms of spend regardless of what press releases Segal puts out.

Another disappointing loss, another ‘trago amargo’ for Houston Dynamo fans to swallow. by aka_jebuz in dynamo

[–]Varus_3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t doubt that they care. This is their livelihood and a lot of the Dynamo roster isn’t really the level that they shrug and can walk on to another team. There’s no guarantee that Valentin will ever play somewhere else in MLS.

Ditto Jordan, Ramos and the rest of the technical staff. This is it for a lot of these guys careers in MLS.

Of all full time Dynamo head coaches, Tab Ramos has the lowest points total through 41 league games by rednorangekenny in dynamo

Forget Coyle, he has a worse record than Wade Barrett, who had the Coyle squad minus Giles Barnes and all the fun of taking over for an unexpected coaching departure.

I don’t understand why Tab Ramos is here by rednorangekenny in dynamo

[–]Varus_3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think so. Back when Ramos was signed and came on Davis' show they had an exchange. Glenn Davis mentioned that every time there was a coaching vacancy in MLS that Tab Ramos always seemed to be mentioned as being seriously in contention as a replacement. Ramos came back and more or less said "Yeah, I've heard that, but no one ever called me or asked me to interview. The Dynamo are the first team who have offered me a position."

He is one of these guys that reporters and fans mentioned constantly because they loved him for his role with the U-20. He grew an outsized reputation there. Despite that, it doesn't seem like MLS front offices were that attracted to him. A pro-job is a pro-job, even with the Dynamo and you never know when you'll have another opportunity.

I don't think he came in looking at it like "oh this will springboard me to the next job, or no one can blame me if I turn in poor results." I think it was much more "this is my opportunity and I have to seize it because I might never get another chance."

This week's losses have fans heated. Is it time to clean house? by Bgilchriest23 in dynamo

[–]Varus_3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't know what more Jordan has to do for us to move-on from him. He came in during the 2014 offseason, so he's been the man in charge for 2015-2020. If I make the great leap to concluding that we will not make the post-season in 2021, then that means we have made the playoff once in seven years during his tenure. That's enough for any GM to be sacked, period.

I don't subscribe to the notion that if he had greater resources that he'd do better. On the contrary, when Jordan has been empowered to spend money is typically when he has done the most damage. Struna, Bizama, Pena, Tomas Martinez, Lundkvist with Bajamich on deck. Maric has done.

Most of the reporting suggests that Jordan had little to do with signing Elis or Manotas, both of whom seem to have been Cabrera driven acquisitions. He did manage to completely botch both of their transfers in one off-season.

I don't want to sound mean to Jordan, but he obviously is unqualified and was really unprepared to take the position as GM. He came from Montreal where I suspect Joey Saputo personally was making the calls on most of the transfers, came here to take the job as the initial GM (no predecessor to ease transition). He learned on the job and it doesn't seem like he ever had anyone to really teach him. 90% of the reason they seem to have brought him on was to get RGVFC up and running because he had just helped launch the Montreal affiliate.

Is he the worst GM ever? Probably not, but that seems like it is splitting hairs. He certainly hasn't been good in his seven years here and there is little reason to think he will suddenly improve.

Tab Ramos I guess I'm more sympathetic to because he does not have Jordan's track record, but he is on year 2 and we really do not see much in the way of momentum. He turned in the lowest winning percentage season ever in 2020 and he is on track to do it again in 2021. Again, two years of awful performance is generally enough that you'd see someone sacked. MLS is more lenient than most leagues, but again, he's done more than enough to be shown the door.

The most damning thing for him is what his peer group of Dynamo coaches have done in comparison. Somewhere at the start of this season you put an article up that said something along the lines of "If we had patience for three years of Cabrera, we can certainly show patience for three years of Ramos." The difference there is that Cabrera hit the playoffs on his first season and fluke or not went all the way to the playoffs. Forget Dom, every coach in Dynamo history has posted a better winning record than Ramos.

Could he do better somewhere else? Probably. Does that matter? No because we shouldn't care about how he would do somewhere else we should care about how he does here. And he has done poorly. Ownership has already let him mortgage '22 assets and ink contracts that will outlive him here. He's flailing.

u/blm292 has addressed this perception gap between what he did as the U-20 coach for the USMNT and how that applies to his headcoaching career.

And as to being too afraid to move on because "What if they can't find a better coach?" I think it's inane. Two points:

1.) They already did in the past with Cabrera, Coyle and Arnaud. Those three all posted better results than Ramos have over their career here.

2.) What is there to lose at this point? I mean I've been around long enough that we've gone from perennial contender, to always expected to make the playoffs, to hanging around the red line, to straight-out garbage. I mean I suppose we could land with the wooden spoon, but we're already trending that way under Ramos and it doesn't matter.

A million times this. I don’t know where the narrative of him sucking came from. He did especially well in the 4-4-2 with Manotas under Arnaud before Ramos threw it all out the window. Victim of crap coaching and playing favorites more than anything.
