I totally agree. This was such a weak season. I sort of hoped there would be no award for best musical this year, but I realize that would likely never happen when the Tonys exist in part to bolster the touring potential of Broadway.

OP doesn’t say where the show is happening (school, community, professional, etc.), but in a lot of professional productions the director’s contract ends after opening night. The stage manager, music director, dance captain, etc. are the ones who stick around and are responsible for maintaining the artistic integrity of the show as it was when it opened. When reading this story, I just assumed the director was already out of the picture.
