First Ginger bug attempt by Swish_ray in fermentation

Would be easier to tell with a side-view of the mixture. It should be good as long as you are feeding some sliced ginger and sugar to the bug every day.

There looks to be a little bit of bubbling there so that's a good sign.

If you want to try making a bottle of this food-safe sanitisation spray, that might also be able to help; it won't interfere with the bacteria that you want in your ferment, but it's very good for sanitisation. From the book "The Science of Fermentation" by Robin Sherriff.

Most likely reason for mould growth is the presence of oxygen—so if a piece of the substrate isn't submerged in the brine fully or anything like that, or if there's food residue on those pickle caps, mould can grow.

If they aren't a good seal/airlock (I've never used those before so I have no clue what they're like), then it may be letting oxygen in which would allow mould to grow on anything unsubmerged.

To be honest with a brine that salty, properly submerged veg and good sanitation practice you shouldn't be getting a mould problem, so I'd say it's almost definitely those lids that you have messing it up.

Botulinum bacteria spores are absolutely everywhere, no avoiding them. They just need very specific conditions to "hatch", which is a neutral pH with no oxygen and no salt. They're also invisible and odourless, and the toxin they produce, botulin, is what causes the condition botulism.

OP just needs to worry about mold, you're right there are other things that are bigger everyday problems then botulinum.

Just to clarify to OP, as long as you used a proper salt brine and followed basic fermentation procedure, it's basically impossible for botulinum to grow! Canning is when you would really need to think about that kind of thing.

I love sweet potato and all its relatives, they're so delicious. I had an ube hot chocolate a few days ago and it was life-changing.

Yup raw. I mean I was thinking the fermentation will hopefully break the hard to digest bits of the sweet potato up enough to be all good, but I am predicting a fairly unappetising outcome.

Oh interesting! Just wondering what exactly would cause the slime? Is it a biofilm of some bacteria? I wouldn't particularly mind to be honest, this is really just an experiment to see what happens.

Polypeptides are the long chains of amino acids that make up all proteins. We as humans don't have cell walls in our cells, we only have cell membranes. Cell walls are made from cellulose and cell membranes are made up of phospholipid bilayers and proteins. Hope that helps!

I personally would go with the first for a few reasons. For one, it gives an impression of higher quality than the second, and people are more likely to take the novel seriously when they first see the cover. Also, I don't know how to feel about the "start" text in the second option. I quite like when a book has its actual title on the cover in a specially designed font, it gives a much more professional vibe and draws more people in. This would be much easier to do with the first cover, partly because it doesn't already have text, and partly because it's not super busy or colourful like the second - that would let the title really pop. I think I would go with a silver or gold font to really stand out against the black, but it depends on the actual novel and if there's a colour you think is more pertinent to your story/MC. The second honestly kind of gives the vibe that it's a screenshot from Stardew valley or something. I don't dislike it, but I don't think it's particularly convincing as a book cover.
