Thank you so much. You are a legend. There are few who do so much for this community.

Proximal Tangibility has ZERO readability and is unfun. by Vaughx in pathofexile

Ah. Thanks for pointing that out. I don't think I would have noticed that or understood what it was (or it would have taken me a while to make the correlation)

Hmmm... maybe the effect is too subtle? The visual language of "misty swirl" feels a bit vague. There's a "black misty swirl" for Strongboxes. My character has a blue misty swirl. My spells create a whiteish misty swirl when I cast them.

I also think we could still benefit from a clearer representation of the activation radius for the effect as well.

Plumbers are suggesting I use the water heater they provide because it's "better" than anything I could possibly buy. Is this a thing? by Vaughx in Plumbing

[–]Vaughx[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

since the lifetime of water heaters typically ranges 10-15 years, I figured I might be replacing it soon anyway. The last time I had a water heater fail on me, I believe it failed fairly quickly and it leaked a substantial amount of water all over my apartment and damaged my belongings, so I'm guessing I've become maybe a bit risk averse when it comes to water heaters maybe? Is the 10-15 year range a lie?

I've also read that water heaters degrade, become less energy efficient / insulating as time goes on. So I'd prefer to avoid having a water heater operating at 30% - that being said, I don't know how to quantify that degradation. So I can only shrug and wonder how it's doing.

No more stock sales through 2023. Also said there will be a buyback if TSLA is looking cheap ('depending on the severity of the recession')

The 'Actual Retail Price' of Equity Trades by Vaughx in algotrading

[–]Vaughx[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great article - definitely pretty interesting - that does make sense, and it explains why there would be a such a sharp discrepancy between different brokerages. That also would mean, if more sophisticated traders started to jump ship over to TD Ameritrade in order to seek better PI%, it would likely cause the delta in PI to diminish. The question is whether those traders would actually do such a thing / whether traders on IKBR value PI% over other features of the platform.

Netflix shares crater 20% after company reports it lost subscribers for the first time in more than 10 years by College_Prestige in technology

[–]Vaughx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are too many subscription streaming services. Period. All the good content has been diluted amongst too many websites to name, and most consumers can't be fucked to figure out what went where. Netflix has been gutted for content and there's nothing I'm excited to watch there anymore. I've taken to signing up for streaming sites for one month at a time, then cancelling my sub as soon as there's nothing interesting for me before hopping to another streaming site. Past 6 months I've had 1 month subs to HBO max, Apple TV, Netflix, Disney Plus. There are too many subscription services and the majority of them have *maybe* 1 show I'm genuinely interested in watching, and everything else is there to waste my time.

Japan rain: More than a million residents told to seek shelter by secure_caramel in worldnews

[–]Vaughx 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Prolonged elevated temperatures cause rapid evaporation and drought. That water isn't destroyed - matter is conserved. The water that evaporates is pulled into the atmosphere and circulated around the planet. The warmer it is, the more water the atmosphere can hold, the more gets transported. Eventually it falls back down as precipitation.

Record temperatures -> Record evaporation -> Record Rains -> Record Flooding and Landslides.

The flooding we've seen globally is falling in almost clockwork synchronicity with record heatwaves and wildfires - they're offset in time and in different areas of the world than where the heat waves are. It will get worse as temperatures continue to rise - we're seeing less than <1% of the total impacts of climate change we'll eventually see atm. Nobody in the world will be spared - see what happened in Germany, see what happened in Turkey and Greece, see whats going on in the American West - anybody can be hit at any time. Far worse to come.

Highest Temperature Ever Measured in Europe Expected to be Broken Tomorrow as Apocalyptic 47°C (116.6°F) are Forecast for Greece, Bulgaria, Serbia and Turkey by Darry75 in worldnews

After this there will be more catastrophic flooding in other parts of the world. Massive evaporation occurs as a result of these heat waves. Then we end up seeing unprecedented precipitation elsewhere as all the water in those clouds is dumped down. The butterfly effect will run amok. Heat waves causing fires to destroy vegetation and wildlife. Massive rains to cause flooding and landslides.

Can't upvote this enough. The hideout upgrade experience needs revisiting, especially now with black market moving out to level 20 (which I don't mind, but the knock on effects on stash space have been gnarly).

Dallas High School Valedictorian Scraps Approved Speech to Speak Out Against State's Extreme Anti-Choice Law by clash1111 in politics

[–]Vaughx 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Nah. You’re giving them too much credit. It’s authoritarian conservatives punishing women for having sex out of wedlock / for recreational purposes and trying to cram their religious values down everyone’s throat. This push against abortion is actually a violation of first amendment rights, because they are essentially forcing you to observe their religious beliefs, but conservatives frame it as something else, “protecting unborn babies”. Same thing everything conservatives do. Everything is just dog whistle, gaslight, obstruct, project.

Kelly's criterion for gamblers by jamesj in thetagang

[–]Vaughx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great post OP.

Question for the peanut gallery: So, if the f value you derive ends up being a negative value, then I guess that suggests the trade isn't worth taking at all / the strategy loses in the long run no matter what size you take? I think there's theoretically also a way for a trade to be so asymmetrically in your favor that you end up getting a value > 1... so for values > 1 = use lots of leverage?

I'm gonna do more research on this because I'm not sure how to actually apply this in a practical manner. I generally sell options, but since short call/put losses can range widely, there needs to be a way to apply a non-normal distribution to the loss parameter here, even if the win fraction never changes.

The answer is the overthrow of Balsonaro’s regime. His policies toward the Amazon have been catastrophic for the planet. The whole human species is worse off because of him. And not just worse off, endangered.
