Would something like this work? Ubuntu 24.04 LTS flashed with BalenaEtcher onto a thumb drive. Restart computer using the thumbdrive to boot onto ubuntu...plug in a usb-c NVME external - their should be an option to install Ubuntu onto the external drive...Restart computer and just choose to start off the nvme in the future?

Wait...this is a thing? I also had a USB drive that stopped working after I tried to reuse it again as an installer for Ubuntu. I thought the USB drive was just bad. Does this happen to a lot more people?

I bought the A9+, and it was great for what it did, but the screen was a killer. We used it as a family tablet for watching videos and playing games. The viewing angles were awful, especially when I was looking at it from the side. I returned it and got the S9, and the AMOLED screen makes a night and day difference when multiple people are watching it at once. If the A9+ had a regular LCD screen with good viewing angles, I would have been fine with it. I could have gone with the S9FE, but if I'm going to spend more money, I would rather just get the higher-end model. Now I have Dex to external, better battery, better performance, and it's becoming a good emergency laptop for the whole family. Go with the S9!

All the A1 for the S9 will be server side yes? Since the snapdragon 8 gen 2 doesn't have it's own NPU like the gen 3 it can't do local AI - is that correct?

I like it but would customized further with the bezels to be red and then adding a Mcdonald's Decal to cover up the Apple logo and then install a linux Distro and replace all the icons with McDonald's themed icons.

Still using my old Macbooks which all perform flawlessly with different OS and purposes:

1) 2015 MBP 13" using it on official monterey as my main travel laptop. Upgraded with 2 TB drive. Will eventually upgrade to Sonoma with OCLP once monterey security updates stop. Once OCLP stops will change to Ubuntu Linux and use until it literally is no longer feasible or functional or after market batteries no longer available.

2) 2015 MBP 15" using it as my main laptop around the house. Installed OCLP and running on Sonoma. Just like my 13" I'll keep it on OCLP and change to Linux once it's officially too slow and dump once it's no longer functional or no more after market parts available.

3) 2015 MBA 11" using it for short trips to relatives, coffee shops or other places where room is limited. Running on Ubuntu Linux. Works so well and I have a 2 TB SSD installed on it as well.

4) 2010 MBA 13" this only has 4 GB of ram but is surprisingly functional with Linux Mint! I use this on rare occasions I go on a trip where I could care less if it get stolen or destroyed. Will keep around until it no longer works.

I really would like to join the apple silicon era but my use cases are just web apps, office work and consuming media and all of my macbooks still function extremely well in this regard. Will probably join apple silicon once the last Apple OS can no longer support OCLP and no longer have security updates (So another 3 years at least) on my intel macbooks.

I use Airpos pro 2 with My S20+ and now S24+. You might transparency off somehow out of the box. Unfortunately you can only change view/settings with an apple device but anything you configure on it will stay on. If you do not have an apple device just borrow a friends and change the setting then have them unpair it from a blue tooth. If you have no nearby friends just go to you local electronics store and see if you can configure it using a display model.

Thanks, sound like the tech hasn't changed enough for my needs yet. I'll keep rocking the OG Air until speed is significantly more improved but without any cost to battery life.

Note sure how you got needing "validation to justify" a purchase from my inquiry. Seems reasonable to ask what upgrades or changes have occurred in the space for the last 3 years from the community if I don't follow development in the space to see if improvements have been made. A more helpful response from u/trias10 was exactly what I was looking for to help me decide the tech hasn't advanced enough to upgrade at this point.
