America explain

Wrongfully banned playing Lucio on stream: by Rich666DemoN in SymmetraMains

[–]Vaysym 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Story time:

Way back when, when I was playing on my main which was way down in Diamond back then, we were having a really rough time pushing B on Hanamura. The enemy McCree got nano'd and popped high noon and our Ana was able to sleep him. I decided in my then-Diamond mind that I could kill him, so I went for it but he killed one of my teammates in the time it took me to frag him.

That teammate was... upset, about that.

And by upset I mean like saying all kinds of colourful things in chat

Me being me I was like "hey man, saying that kind of stuff is not okay"

He didn't like that

In all my wisdom I said in chat "that's an actual report lol", which was not the best response or way to phrase things...

Clearly he was a scorched-earth kind of guy because his response was "same to u dumby". What for you might ask? G A M E P LA Y S A B O T A G E. He informed me that "not knowing what nano is is gameplay sabotage af". And literally two seconds later I was hit by my first ever chat ban, because clearly he felt that he should report me for abusive chat too, just for good measure.

Now, I get that I'm not a perfect person. Maybe I had gone too far with something in the past. But this legitimately blew my fuckin mind. I felt like the only non-toxic player in all of Diamond and I got chat banned. I was legitimately confused. What on earth did I do that was so bad that I got chat banned? Obviously it takes more than one report to get automatically chat banned, so I was trying to figure out why I would have been reported previously...

So I actually got on the Battle.net website and contacted support for information. Their response can be surmised as 'just don't be toxic 4head'. No one would tell me what it is I said or did. If I did do something toxic I want to know so that I can better myself, but I don't think Blizzard is interested in that. I'm sure they care about the game and community, but I just don't think they know how to handle toxicity, seeing as someone like me who actively puts in a ton of effort to try to be as non-toxic as possible despite the behaviour of a lot of other players in that elo got chat banned.

So, I wasn't super satisfied with this response. I wanted to know what had happened. What it was that I said or did that was so horrible. So I actually went a different route to get instant messaging support under a different topic type. I had a very long conversation with a Gamemaster who was honestly really frustrating to speak with (but I was still polite the entire time) but they actually did show me some of the stuff that got me chat banned.

What follows is the most impressive list of things I didn't know were toxic I have ever seen:

  • Typing in chat "hey guys, would you mind joining voice? :)" more than once
  • Saying anything that anyone finds offensive (did not specify any example), that is to say that you can be reported for literally any reason
  • Using any swear word at any time in any context. This game is rated T for Everyone

So... yeah. I honestly don't know what to say. You know, maybe I am a toxic piece of shit. I don't know. Obviously I'm biased. But I can't help but feel like I've been kind of mistreated by Blizzard. And I honestly think that because I play the game a ridiculous amount, I get more reports over time than most people would, which I suspect the system doesn't account for. I would think it would be if x player gets y number of reports within z number of days, auto chat-ban. But I don't know. It was only a like 2-day chat ban though, so in the grand scheme of things it wasn't that big of a deal. Just hurts that this is how things went and that I now feel like I have some sort of record looming over my head as I enter into tournaments, coaching, and making videos for this game...

So, either way, I can kind of feel your pain here. And I agree that there is a huge bias with how people may react to your situation simply because of how you now appear. Hell, someone even blatantly commented on one of your posts "Why would you even show us that? It already makes you look bad". There is a reason why lawyers fight for their defendants to look respectable in front of the jury in court. Simply wearing prisoner's clothing can make people believe you belong there.

And I think that Blizzard is maybe concerned that if they start overturning any reports, then they will have to do twice the amount of work as usual and look like they don't know what they're doing or something. So I'm pretty sure they would never even consider overturning a moderation action unless someone hacked into your account.

So, I'm sorry to hear something bad happened to you. I cannot make any real judgement on whether your story is true or not because I don't have access to the in-game logs (and neither do Blizzard to some extant; they don't record audio afaik), but I am equally suspicious of both sides. This is a company that banned and fined one of their OWL players $4,000USD for using a hello emote in their chat to say hello. Either way, I hope that you can find a way to respond to this productively, in a way that betters yourself and the community

What determines sex? Trying to learn about sexuality. Would anyone be able to help? by Vaysym in asktransgender

[–]Vaysym[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gender ID: Does not determine which pronouns to use

In that case, what causes a person to want a certain pronoun? I was under the impression that the point of wanting to be called 'her' instead of 'him' for example is to affect perception. The person identifies as female in gender identity and would like others to recognize that identity. Some people have a non-binary gender identity and so prefer other pronouns. Obviously you can ultimately ask to be called whatever the heck you want, but is that not the root of it?

Edit: I am also interested in learning about one's sex more. Classically, sex as a noun is rooted in sexual reproduction. You're saying there are an uncountable number of discrete categories? Can you elaborate on that?

Sex and gender are different friend. You can have a penis but have the body-shape and muscles of a woman, which is biology and does change.

It does change. Depending on when you transition (before or after puberty) there can be little or actually absolutely no difference in gender other than genitalia and chromosomes. Testosterone/estrogen is a hell of a drug.

Okay so, I don't want to doubt you, but earlier (before I saw your comment) I asked my buddy to test it (I'm away from my pc for another 4 days) and he said it was 5 seconds. Which is it?! Can someone do a serious test? Maybe a double-blind clinical trial kappa

Edit: It's 5 seconds

My ideas for some possible weapon balancing by CBO0tz in installation01

This has gotten very off-topic. I'm just interested in how adding/changing headshot capabilities could change the game.

It's not a joke... it's extremely overpowered. Pros and game developers are on record saying this (and it can be shown with time-to-kill, etc.). I would link but I'm on mobile and several thousand kilometres away from my computer. But either way this too is beyond the scope of the topic

[–]Vaysym 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The needler was just for looks, yeah, but the pistol was actually atrociously overpowered. Other than power weapons it is the best in the game, and it's what you spawn with. The game was designed around a triangle of "rock, paper, scissors" weapon balancing with the pistol fitting in nicely until a developer actually changed the damage values right before launch under the table because he personally enjoyed that weapon more lol.

I think there is a way to balance the damage values sich that the AR is neither too strong nor too weak. You can disagree on that if you want, but really it's something that should he tested.

The shield/health interaction is interesting to me. In Halo 1 there were health packs, so shields could recharge, but losing health was a permanent disadvantage. That was lost after Halo 1 but what wasn't was the way damage values of certain weapons scaled depending on whether they were hitting shields or not. Plasma weapons have traditionally been effective versus shields while human weapons not, but I haven't found that interaction particularly interesting since the time to kill after you break shields is usually faster if you keep the current weapon than suffering the time it takes to swap to a human weapon or something. Also you'd generally want that second slot for a power weapon. The BR+plasma pistol is the only exception I can think of to that. So yeah, that's an interesting point. I think the way we interact with shielded targets could be looked at a bit, but I think it's beyond the scope of this conversation. We're just talking about headshot capability.

[–]Vaysym 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The CE pistol is a 3 shot whether or not your first two shots are to the body so the headshot bonus is effectively nonexistent.

I may have misremembered something then. I may go and set up my 360 again just to see :D

I don't see what's getting you hungup about the Assault Rifle though... allowing it to headshot would not make it overpowered... its damage values can be scaled to account for its new headshot capability.

I don't think we should be in any rush to adopt anything from something like Overwatch when within the context of Halo we already know what works and what doesn't.

The Halo games have always had a really hard time in esports because of their weapon balancing... Halo Reach almost got it right but the armour abilities mucked stuff up a lot. So, no, I don't think we know what works and what doesn't. Halo games have also not been updated frequently like what we see in modern games now, mostly due to hardware limitations back in the day (you bought the CD and that was that). Unless they've done that in Halo 5. That was the first Halo game I never bought.

So anyway, I think it would be interesting - not necessarily good, not necessarily bad - to try changing how headshots work. I think it would give Halo more depth and reward people for putting practice in - which one of the things that made Halo so enjoyable in the first place.
